Introduction Explore Socialise Why study? If you enjoy problem solving, excel in maths and physics and have a strong interest in aircraft, spacecraft, aviation, or related technologies then this is the course for you. graduates are extremely successful in diverse occupations from engineering through to consultancy and finance. Develop Research Work What is Aerospace Engineering? Aerospace engineering is concerned with the design and construction of aircraft. It is a distinct yet broad subject which covers a varied range of disciplines in an integrated and unified way. Whatever your career choice, you will be able to appreciate the subtle interplay inherent in the complex aerospace design process. For example, structures must be light in weight, but strong and stiff; aerofoils and bodies must provide lift efficiently without disproportionate drag; flight should be fuel efficient, but controllable and safe. Engineering involves the realisation of concepts and ideas. This process involves many stages, including conceptual thinking, analysis of ideas, detail design, testing and production. During this process, many cycles of refinement may be needed to optimise performance, especially in complex systems such as those found in aircraft. Engineering is a synthesis involving many skills, and a practical engineer must be able to analyse concepts and understand the fundamental theories that underlie them. Why Bristol? Bristol is the ideal place to study aerospace engineering because of both the dedication and expertise of the staff and its location at the heart of the UK aerospace industry. Airbus UK, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, AgustaWestland Helicopters, GE Aviation and GKN Aerospace are on our doorstep. The vibrant nature of the department is reflected in our connections with these and other industry partners. We have a leading role within the UK National Composites Centre. We are founding members of the UK Applied Aerodynamics Consortium, and partners in the Centre for Fluid Mechanics Simulation (CFMS). International interest from non-academic centres includes, NASA Langley, Los Alamos National Laboratories, US Air Force and EADS Military Air Systems (Germany). Your future In choosing to study at Bristol, you will benefit from our industrial relationships with opportunities such as an industry mentor, internships and summer placements, industrial seminars and research projects. During the undergraduate design project, your team will work directly with Airbus, AgustaWestland and EADS Astrium, providing you with a truly inspiring and authentic experience, and future employment opportunities.
What will I study? The degree is a four year MEng course (H410), which enables you to graduate with an accredited engineering qualification recognised throughout Europe. Through an intense but gratifying four years of study, Aerospace Engineering at the University of Bristol has helped put me on the career path I had always hoped for. Lectures cover the fundamentals and are backed up by practical experience through coursework and laboratory exercises. The first two years are devoted to underpinning concepts, organised into three streams: aerodynamics; dynamics and control; and structures and materials. You will also study basic engineering skills that cross all these streams, such as computing, systems engineering and design. There is extensive mathematical content throughout. In the third and fourth years, greater flexibility is available for you to pursue options that particularly interest you. Some options relate to particular application areas, such as helicopter aerodynamics, space systems, or wind and marine power. Others study particular technologies, such as advanced composites analysis, experimental aerodynamics or multidisciplinary design. You can also take University-wide options such as sustainable development. Third and fourth year units develop knowledge, skills and understanding in the main areas and include a substantial amount of project work. Senior design staff at Airbus UK, AgustaWestland and Astrium lead the fourth year group design project; groups of around eight students work competitively to the same design specification, and many factors contributing to the design of an aircraft are considered. For students with an interest in fixed wing, we run a project in close collaboration with Airbus. For rotary wing aircraft, our helicopter design project is supported by AgustaWestland. Finally, for space enthusiasts, we run a spacecraft design project supported by EADS Astrium. These projects provide a major opportunity for the application of systems engineering principles. We run research projects in both third and fourth years, the former acting as a preliminary study for the latter. These research projects provide the opportunity to investigate a problem in detail, and may involve theoretical, computational or experimental work. They often include some industrial contact, and each is aligned to the research interests of our academic staff who closely guide progress. There are options available each year with the fourth year being entirely option based. In years one and two you may study a modern language. The second and third year contains elements of professional engineering studies: topics covered include management, marketing, accounting, economics, politics and law. We also offer a four-year MEng course in with Study in Continental Europe (H401). The first two years are identical, except that the modern language element is usually mandatory. The typical offer includes grade A at GCSE, or equivalent in the language to be studied. The third year is spent at a partner university in Europe, studying and related subjects, including undertaking a substantive research a project. The fourth year is spent back at Bristol.
Course structure While we don t offer a sandwich course, you can apply for a year-long placement after the second or third year. We encourage you to pursue these opportunities and we recognise the value they add to your studies. 18.5m Bristol Laboratory for Advanced Dynamic Engineering (BLADE) fantastic world-class facilities for cutting-edge research activity and teaching. This degree is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng). This degree has been accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council. Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK- SPEC). An accredited degree will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng). Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.
Teaching Making the transition from school or college to university is a major step for most students. We operate a formal tutor system throughout the four-year course. Student profile Sheik Abdul Malik MEng Many research projects are conducted with different companies giving us vast opportunities to gain practical experience. In your first year you re placed in a group of four or five students who ll meet once a week throughout the year with an academic tutor. These meetings offer the opportunity to discuss recent practical exercises, lab write-ups, assessed tests and questions, upcoming assignments and individual courses. Some additional topics are covered by your tutor, such as improving your presentation skills. Your tutor also serves as a first point of contact for any work or university related queries. Your tutor will remain with you during the second year, providing academic support throughout your time at university. In the third and fourth year your project supervisor takes on the role of your personal tutor. Aerospace engineering is a demanding but extremely rewarding subject with a careful balance between lectures, lab exercises and tutorials, combining theory with practical experience. You will write software for a navigation system; design an undercarriage; design, build and test a wing structure; and measure flows and forces on aerofoils. In the major group design project, you could work on the concept for a new commercial aircraft, helicopter or satellite, presenting your design to industry for assessment. In your research project, you will tackle a more specific problem in much greater detail, such as automated landing of an Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV), design of a hypersonic engine intake or bio-inspired design of future composite materials. Leading research Research in the department is internationally renowned, comprising a wealth of expertise, ranging from energy harvesting to unsteady aerodynamics, advanced composites to active vibration damping, UAVs to renewable energy, and high performance computing to landing gear dynamics. There are several external trips and activities timetabled throughout the degree course including a first-year visit to the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton and a second-year flight test course where you will undertake a series of experimental exercises while flying in a fully instrumented aeroplane. at Bristol University is one of the best in the UK. The University has very good industrial links with top companies such as Rolls-Royce and Airbus which are based locally. Many research projects are conducted with different companies giving us vast opportunities to gain practical experience. The teaching here is unique; the course encourages us to learn to think about and research topics on our own. The laboratory facilities are very good and by using them we apply things learnt during the course for a better understanding of concepts. My lecturers and personal tutors are very friendly and supportive. They teach us how to tackle problems and come up with solutions. They also motivate us to think about new ideas. I am a member of Engineers Without Borders and work on a variety of exciting projects, making loads of friends. I am the IT Officer for Brisoc responsible for managing the website and electronic gadgets, and I get involved with lots of social events. This degree is tailored so that when we graduate we have the practical experience and technical skills required to deal with the challenges we may face in our career. If you are certain that your career lies in the aviation sector then this is definitely the right academic course for you to start with!
Career prospects The next steps Many of our graduates find employment in some part of the diverse aerospace industry. However, you will find many opportunities to apply the same principles in other high-technology industries. Our courses open numerous career opportunities as they provide a framework for developing good numeracy and creative skills, with a broad technological basis and the ability to work creatively in a team. Our graduates are highly sought after and the department s strong relationships with the major aerospace companies further enhance career prospects. One quarter of graduates go on to further degrees and more than one half go into aerospace industry, operators or research establishments. Our students benefit from a dedicated Industrial Liaison Office which develops links such as internship and mentoring schemes, industry-specific Inside Track lectures and industrial scholarships, prizes and projects. Graduate profile Robin Taylor-Hunt Commercial and Customer Support Director, Turbomeca UK Ltd Bristol offered me the opportunity to study a solid degree at a respected university. While there I gained an enthusiasm for working with other people; I also learnt to study on my own within my own timescales, to achieve given goals and objectives. Being an effective leader demands an ability to interact with people from all backgrounds just like the diverse students I met at Bristol. It also requires good motivational skills such as those developed through extracurricular clubs like the Engineering Society, for which I was Chairperson. I like to think that Bristol graduates are always intelligent and motivated but most importantly they re always nice people! Is there any advice you can give me on making my application? We look at all candidates to assess your strengths and suitability and try to interview everyone to whom we intend to make an offer. Most students have at least three A-levels with grade A in both Mathematics and Physics. We also make equivalent offers to candidates taking the International, French or European Baccalaureate, Abitur, Scottish or Irish Leaving Certificate and other qualifications. While our courses attract those looking for careers in the aerospace industry, we encourage applications from those who are well-motivated, with numeracy skills, a healthy and broad technological bias and the ability to work creatively in a team. An important consideration beyond an applicant s academic record relates to their fitness to practice engineering. That is whether the applicant has the motivation, temperament and character to practise engineering as a profession. Thus we look favourably on applications who demonstrate some or all of the following; a clear interest in and commitment to the subject; evidence of clear thinking and understanding, problem-solving and analytical skills; clear evidence of relevant reading or research into the subject area; non-academic achievement and/ or experience, or extracurricular interests, positions of responsibility, voluntary or paid work. Can I get sponsorship for my studies? We encourage sponsorship in any way we can and a significant number of our students are typically sponsored. We recognise that there are not enough sponsorship places to meet the demand and therefore treat candidates equally whether or not they are seeking sponsorship. Unfortunately we are unable to put candidates in contact with potential sponsors.
