on the cover Situated on the Derwent River foreshore, the Glenorchy Art and Sculpture Park (GASP) stage 2 project is a striking community art facility built by Fairbrother Construction. The project scope included the extension of a boardwalk to a promontory, establishment of a wetlands area, construction of a box-like lookout incorporating public amenities and extensive civil and landscaping works. A major design feature is the cantilevered pre-cast and structural steel lookout, featuring extensive coloured glazing. This lookout extends some 15 metres over the Derwent River providing a unique floating viewpoint across the estuary. A set of blade walls establishes a pavilion and a courtyard which will host functions and events. contents 6 Tim Mead - President's Report 7 Steven French - Editor's Report 8 Special Awards 12 Residential Awards 24 Commercial Awards 37 Finalists Photography by Ben Hosking

The Employee of the Year section was also well supported, with over double the nominations since its introduction last year. It is pleasing that, along with the Apprentice categories, employers continue to take the chance to recognise their exceptional employees. All of this year s candidates were of the highest calibre, and in the case of the Employee of the Year, originating from a diverse range of fields, thus creating an extremely difficult task for their respective judging panels. Our appreciation and thanks to the dedicated people involved, who invest a great deal of time and energy determining our eventual winners. Congratulations to the many finalists and winners throughout all categories, who we know will continue to make Tasmania proud in the National Awards later in the year. Commendations to the Regional Management Committees and their newly appointed Chairmen: David Gates [North West]; Tony Streathland [North]; and Russell Oakes [South]. Along with existing committee members, we extend our appreciation of your willingness to put your hands up to take on these crucial positions - it is pleasing to welcome such energetic new faces around the state. We look forward to working with them at the State Council level and wish them all the best as they settle into their new roles. While the Regional and State Council delegates are set for the next two years, we would still welcome additional numbers. Any members wishing to join can contact myself or any other State Council member. It s your Association get involved! As I am nearing the end of my term as President, I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all MBAT staff as well as those at Mead Con, for their continued and excellent support during the past two years. Also a huge thank you to my fellow Council members and past President, Wayne Licht for their assistance and encouragement through a busy and thoroughly rewarding term. It has been an honour to represent Tasmania and to be able to progress and speak on the members behalf at political and national levels. It has certainly been a revelation to realise how influential an association we are in government and corporate business areas where we have direct input into legislative and governing bodies. 9 2014 Master Builders Tasmania Awards for Excellence Well done to those of you proud enough of your work to put your project(s) and employees before the judges for consideration in the 2014 Master Builders Tasmania Awards for Excellence. FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Steven French As the state s premium awards for the building and construction industry the kudos associated with these rewards for a job well done should never be underestimated. You will notice that it is the smart companies who enter and often win awards. Winning an award brings a wide range of benefits to a business and its employees. Receiving an honour is a great tool to help a company stand out from its competitors. An award is a perfect way for a company to draw attention to itself and away from rival business. Validation: Awards speak volumes about a company s ability. It substantiates their credibility. Even an award nomination can be helpful because it validates a company s leadership in its given market and proves it is ahead of the curve. Worker inspiration: Everyone wants to work for a successful company, a company with credibility. Winning an award is an excellent way to demonstrate to staff that the company they work for does indeed stand out from the opposition. This not only motivates staff but also helps attract personnel who have a desire to work at the top of their profession. Testimony: Winning an award, or even being nominated, serves as testament to a company s work ethic, dedication, professionalism and unique abilities. New customers will likely consider a company or organisation s work over another if it has won an award. Current customers will view the award as a good thing, reinforcing their loyalty and willingness to recommend the business to their contemporaries. How often do we find ourselves looking for credibility before we purchase something new? An award provides that assurance. Visibility: Awards can help garner a significant amount of visibility in a certain market and help attract new customers. Reputation: An award can improve the perceived reputation of a company to the general public and organisations or individuals in the market for a builder. Recognition has the potential to transform a company s reputation from pretty good, to outstanding. Now is the time to start thinking about next year s awards. Are you proud of the project that you are currently, or will be, working on? Can you go that extra yard and make your project stand out from the crowd? The significance of winning awards should never be taken lightly. Otherwise why would the established guys and the big companies go to the effort to of entering the Master Builders Awards for Excellence? Well done, cbus from all of At Cbus, we understand the hard work, effort and skill required in all areas of building and construction. That s why Cbus would like to congratulate all the winners of the Master Builders Tasmania 2014 Excellence Awards. A job well done. 10 NATIONAL EXCELLENCE IN WORKPLACE HEALTH & SAFETY Vos Construction & Joinery Pty Ltd Project: Sorell Council Administration Centre The Sorell Council Administration Centre is a project built to high safety standards and best practice. The Vos Construction and Joinery safety management system has evolved significantly in the past 10 years. An intensive course called the Safety Circle Culture Program is delivered to all levels of the organisation and focusses on thinking about why safety drops from peoples minds, and how to assertively draw a line between what is acceptable safe behaviour and what is not. This award is highly sought after on the National arena with fierce competition with the biggest and the best to overcome. Congratulations Vos Construction and Joinery on this fantastic achievement. NATIONAL PRESIDENT S AWARD Fairbrother Pty Ltd Project: Devonport Maritime Museum SPECIAL AWARDS JUDGES INSPIRATION RESIDENTIAL AM Milson Pty Ltd Project: Blakes Yellow Rock This landmark local project involved extension to the existing Port of Devonport Harbour Master s residence to provide a modern space for maritime exhibits. The design concept reflects the curves and materials typically associated with a ship s hull. Rough sawn ship-lap timber weatherboards have been used to create an external finish reminiscent of the timber ship building era. Timber plays a dominant role and is consistent with the design brief and intended use of a hard wearing and durable material. A truly unique project which has been successfully contested at the national level and has been awarded the coveted National President s Award. This amazing house was built on a sand dune on the north west coast of King Island. From the moment the judges first sighted this project it remained in their minds. Significant thought has gone into this home to enable it to fit comfortably within it surrounds. Materials have been chosen carefully so that in time, they will be in balance with their environment. This house is inspirational. It is a beautiful haven, an artistically designed and built shelter in a sometimes hostile environment. A truly worthy winner of this award. JUDGES INSPIRATION COMMERCIAL Fairbrother Construction Project: Glenorchy Art and Sculpture Park Stage 2 This bold architectural interpretation is situated on the Derwent River foreshore at Glenorchy. A set of blade walls establishes a pavilion and courtyard with select openings to frame views of the surrounding landscape. A large cantilevered pre-cast and structural steel lookout extends 15 metres over the river and features coloured glazing. The result is an eye-catching community arts facility hosting functions and events surrounded on three sides by the waters of the spectacular Derwent River. This project is inspirational. The concept and the execution of the work have transformed the site into a place of beauty. 8

RESIDENTIAL MEDIUM DENSITY CONSTRUCTION OPEN VALUE (2 OR MORE DWELLINGS) Lyden Builders Project: Oceana Drive Project The concept behind the exterior design was to construct two homes at Tranmere that would be very different in appearance yet complement each other in their individuality. The front townhouse has a spacious layout and is positioned to capture the stunning views over the Derwent River with large floor to ceiling windows in the main living area. At the rear of the block the second building is just as impressive in its simplicity and style. This home also has inspiring, unimpeded views of the river and Mt Wellington. From spacious, open plan living to an expansive master suite, both homes are designed to exceed expectations. Lyden Builders have successfully achieved their objectives 12

RENOVATION / ADDITION UNDER $150,000 CRC Crerar Restoration and Construction Project: Campania House Campania House (circa 1840) is a late example of a Georgian Homestead. The brief was to upgrade and enclose the rear verandah which was being used as the main access to become a more appropriate stylish main entrance, to completely makeover the existing kitchen that was well past its use-by date, and the fabrication and installation of new windows. The brief also called for the installation of a new modern kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities. Original fabric was recycled as much as possible including the sandstone flagstones to the enclosed veranda. RESIDENTIAL RENOVATION / ADDITION OVER $150,000 Complete Renovations and Construction Project: Campbell Street Residence This project was a unique one right from the start. The clients knew what outcomes they wanted and did not intend to deviate from their budget. Complete Renovations and Construction worked closely with the designer and clients to provide solutions from the outset with time invested in finding suitable materials. A light weight construction was chosen due to the extremely difficult access to the site and to blend with the 1930 s red brick original home. A mix of Axon cladding and timber product made from 70 per cent recycled hardwood waste deemed to be low maintenance with good UV resistance and high impact strength was chosen. Work was carried out around the original kitchen which was required to be incorporated into the renovation. The project completed within a very tight timeframe and on budget. 13

RESIDENTIAL DWELLING CONSTRUCTION UNDER $200,000 Collins Homes Project: Devonport Residence DWELLING CONSTRUCTION $200,000 - $350,000 The biggest challenge was to fit as large a home as possible on the small 372 square metre block in Devonport. The outcome is a modern and stylish three bedroom, two bathroom home situated close to both main shopping areas and Devonport s renowned Bluff precinct. There is a functional outdoor space which allows for easy entertaining and an ample off street parking area. The main living area offers superb lighting, unusual window solutions and raked ceilings to create a spacious, sun filled heart of the home. Clayton Construction Project: Dolphin Sands This new coastal home at Dolphin Sands is nestled at the top of a major sand dune on a remote, un-serviced block and no existing access presented a difficult challenge to deliver on time and on budget. The close proximity to the ocean s corrosive atmosphere and being in a bush fire prevalent area meant that the materials chosen had to be sympathetic to the environment and surroundings. A combination of fibre-cement sheeting and Colorbond steel with accents of natural timber was used with a timber platform and lightweight construction. The majority of the home is taken up by the open plan living area which has a high, raked ceiling and a large sun drenched cantilevered window seat. Workmanship throughout is of the highest standards. 14

DWELLING CONSTRUCTION $200,000 - $350,000 HIGHLY COMMENDED Ronald Young & Co Builders Project: Kia Cyan Tasmanian Fire Doors Tasmanian Fire Doors are a locally owned and operated family manufacturing business, supplying the vast majority of the building industry state wide of: Fire/architectural doors and fire windows Fire resistant pillows Security doors Life safety doors Doors & hardware repair and replacement service Pressed metal door frames Fire stop collars Fire prevention sealants Smoke doors Industrial doors TasmanianFireDoors Stony Rise Road, PO Box 809, Devonport TAS 7310 The inspired blend of vertical Tasmanian oak ship-lapped external cladding with the variegated texture of the Austral Elements Series zinc brickwork delivers a significant first impression. The cladding provides the warm hue and natural elements that were the client s requirements in the design brief. This designer home at Tranmere is open plan with large north easterly facing floor to ceiling windows enabling majestic views of Mt Wellington and North West Bay. This is classical diva meets contemporary design fulfilling the client s vision of their dream home. 18 DWELLING CONSTRUCTION $350,000 - $500,000 De Groot Builders Project: Lindisfarne House This project consisted of a four bedroom, three bathroom dwelling constructed on a very restricted site. Foundation works required the regular use of a rock breaker. While it was a continual improvement to the access, most of the materials delivered on site had to be carried up from the bottom of the drive and the concrete had to be pumped from the road. The footing and slab preparations we done in June with extreme weather conditions and some days frost lasted all day and the sun was virtually absent. One essential item in the client s brief for the kitchen was a three metre island bench top with waterfall ends and no joins. This was just not obtainable so the builders researched, designed and built onsite to the delight of the clients. RESIDENTIAL DWELLING CONSTRUCTION $350,000 - $500,000 HIGHLY COMMENDED SAC & JA Cunningham Pty Ltd Project: Clarke Home The client s required a house that blended with its surrounds and captured the historic nature of Latrobe in Northern Tasmania. They wanted it to look 100 years old on the outside but be contemporary on the inside. This was achieved with an excellent design, a lot of homework by the client s and a superb job by the builder. The build is a two storey, Baltic weatherboard residence with dormer windows. Downstairs boast three metre high walls with raked, 2.4 metre ceilings upstairs and features stained timber flooring throughout the main living areas. The build was very labour intensive and except for the foundations, was all carpentry a builder s dream! The judges were delighted to see traditional building skills being used to such a high standard. 16

DWELLING CONSTRUCTION $500,000 - $750,000 Maveric Builders Pty Ltd Project: Jamiesons Road Project In a letter from the client, the positive relationship that developed between the client and Maveric Builders was one of the most rewarding aspects of the construction process of this home in Margate. The quality and high standard of expertise that went into the build of this architect designed home was exceptional. The building skills and demonstrated knowledge of the variety of materials used in construction gave the client s every confidence in the Maveric Builder s team and were delighted with the outcome. 20 RESIDENTIAL DWELLING CONSTRUCTION OVER $750,000 HIGHLY COMMENDED Elysium Builders Project: Drivers Run No. 1 Built in the Drivers Run eco-residential development this stunning home was designed and built to take full advantage of the sweeping views of the city of Launceston whilst sitting peacefully in its rural setting. This contemporary family home is a prime example of minimalist, modern design which marks the intricate details of its many features. This home includes a gym, controlled temperature wine cellar, media room and a stunning Calcutta marble feature wall which runs both externally and internally. Both the owner and builder s favourite feature is the swim spa built in the outside deck. There was very little to separate this beautifully crafted home from the winner of this category. DWELLING CONSTRUCTION OVER $750,000 Mansfield Builders Project: Victoria Esplanade Residence The design approach was to utilise building forms that reflected on the original historical precinct home which had to be demolished. The feature gables on each end of the new dwelling used the same roof pitch and scale of the pre-existing yet provided spaces with warmth and natural light in a contemporary manner. Steel PFC sections have acted as fascia to the glass gables in order to provide a bold and modern aesthetic and bracing the tall open structures. The floor plan takes direct cues from the original set-out. The most prominent feature is the indoor glassroofed swimming pool which is the heart and soul of this family home. A simple palate of materials and colour scheme has been chosen to create that timeless elegance throughout. With such minimal design and large open spaces there is nowhere for bad detailing or poor craftsmanship to hide everything here is impeccable, on show and here to see. A very worthy winner. 18

HERITAGE LISTED RESTORATION / RENOVATION UP TO $500,000 MA Design & Construction Pty Ltd Project: Lyttleton Residence The biggest challenge of this project was an underground river causing extensive rising damp, rotting floors and joists and water lying in the backyard. The backyard was excavated and a series of french drains were introduced inside sub walls 30 cm away from the footings. A concrete slab with hydronic system was then laid alleviating any further rising damp and providing economical sustainable heating. All materials were re-used and up-cycled where possible to retain as many of the original features. Every measure was made to allow modern living to blend into this 1834 Georgian building with careful consideration to sustainable efficiency and cost effective energy requirements. The work has been carried out with the eyes and hands of craftsman builders so that a beautiful Georgian building has a new life in the 21st century and beyond.
