10 MBA ENERGY MANAGEMENT WHAT TO EXPECT WHAT SETS THIS PROGRAMME APART? 19 What you can expect from the MBA ENERGY MANAGEMENT programme... WHICH MODULES ARE NEEDED? HOW DOES A MODULE WORK? It s the unique opportunity for every student to be matched with a senior industry professional as their mentor. It s the sort of shadowing that could seriously brighten your career prospects! To gain the MBA Energy Management you will need to successfully complete either: Eight core modules plus a work-based project OR Eight core modules plus four elective modules TYPICAL TIMETABLE Core Modules Business Strategy Project Management Business & Money Value & Markets The Leadership Challenge Business Model Innovation Managing Self & Others Managing Change & Innovation ELECTIVE MODULES Supply Chain Management Talking to Teams Internationalisation Energy Finance THE WORK-BASED PROJECT Should you elect to undertake a work-based project in addition to the 8 core courses, you will be allocated a project tutor as you approach completion of these courses. This tutor will then work with you and your employer to define a suitable project that contains appropriate challenges and is a realistically achievable subject to choose. To give you a clear idea of how a module works in practice here s a breakdown of the Business Strategy module: Each module is delivered by the Academic team working in partnership with an Honorary Executive Fellow from our Professional Faculty. This partnership ensures an industry-true learning experience for those working through the module. It s about keeping things real, that way the knowledge you gain can be used to add value directly back into the energy industry. For Business Strategy, the module is delivered by the Director of the Graduate Business School, Russell Williams, with the support of one of our Honorary Executive Faculty, Glenn Corr, Director, Maersk Oil Ltd. After providing an overview of some core strategy ideas and frameworks, the module quickly moves you to action-orientated learning. Working in teams, you will first take on the role of an Exploration and Production (E&P) Analyst working in a simulated oil and gas company. The company has an existing portfolio of assets, but has just received an opportunity to become a co-venturer in a new oil/gas prospect. As the E&P Analyst, your task will be to process all the information received, research out a little more information and make a recommendation to the Board. This will take the form of a presentation and short report, after which, you ll move on to another role. You re then tasked with thinking about and managing the strategic plan for the company s portfolio of assets reacting to change and revising your plan as events unfold. Finally, our real-world simulation immerses you in another key issue for the business partnering. The company has joint operating agreements for some of its assets. So you ll need to consider the resulting issues and think about a strategy to manage these often complex partner relationships. The aim of these realistic industry simulations is to give you an up close and personal insight into how many oil and gas companies operate and manage their businesses today. And hopefully a glimpse of how they ll do it tomorrow. To demonstrate your understanding of how oil and gas companies operate, we will then ask you to produce a short individual piece of work that will go into your assessment portfolio. Even full-time employees in the energy business don t usually enjoy the mentoring of a senior industry professional for a whole year. But that s just what our students enjoy on the MBA Energy Management programme. For the whole programme, you re matched with an Honorary Executive Fellow from our Professional Faculty as a personal mentor. Imagine the valuable insights and connections you ll learn. Now imagine how much of an advantage that gives you a year down the line when you re applying for posts in the industry. Just one reason why coming to the University of Aberdeen is such a clever move. WE CALL IT LEARNING FROM LEADERS Learning from leaders really is a no brainer if you re serious about succeeding in the energy sector. This senior industry professional will be assigned to help you develop your real-world skills and give feedback so your learning curve will be rapid and above all, relevant. The Professional Faculty is designed to connect you, the student, with a senior industry professional from the business community thus forming a powerful learning dynamic. Our Honorary Executive Fellows provide the vital link to the industry you need to access. VALUABLE INSIGHTS FOR YOU By learning with the Academic and Professional Faculty in this way, you will deepen and enhance your specialist knowledge and development and you will obtain the intimate insight into industry that no traditional lectures could ever provide. Studying an MBA at the University of Aberdeen has been both a significant challenge and a remarkable learning experience. After being away from education for more than 7 years (working in my home country, Venezuela), what a magnificent finding it is to rediscover how studying can change you in positive ways and how the interaction with fellows from a range of cultures increases the size of your world map, both in terms of new and valuable friendships and in terms of cultural understanding. Not only does the University possess high quality teachers and convenient facilities, it also becomes the door which you are invited to open in order to explore and find knowledge to become critical and to create. The City of Aberdeen, on the other hand, delivers what promises, and even more. A beautiful coastal city which has it all: entertainment, art, proximity to amazing landscapes and towns and, of course, those incredible views of the beach. After the completion of the MBA programme, I would like to keep working some more years in the service industry, leading a challenging business unit. Later on, I would like to set up my own business: after all, I feel more confident in my knowledge and skills, and I am positive they will be key to success in the business environment. THIRD SEMESTER MANAGING CHANGE AND INNOVATION: Enables students to understand the context of innovation and change by examining a number of key topics, including the development of new products(goods and services) and developing the business case for innovation and delivering change. In the third semester, students undertake to explore three elective models from a selected range of business topics here are some of the previous choices: Essential Human Resource Practices International Business International Marketing E-Business Talking to Teams Strategic Financial Analysis.
