10 MBA ENERGY MANAGEMENT WHAT TO EXPECT WHAT SETS THIS PROGRAMME APART? 19 What you can expect from the MBA ENERGY MANAGEMENT programme... WHICH MODULES ARE NEEDED? HOW DOES A MODULE WORK? It s the unique opportunity for every student to be matched with a senior industry professional as their mentor. It s the sort of shadowing that could seriously brighten your career prospects! To gain the MBA Energy Management you will need to successfully complete either: Eight core modules plus a work-based project OR Eight core modules plus four elective modules TYPICAL TIMETABLE Core Modules Business Strategy Project Management Business & Money Value & Markets The Leadership Challenge Business Model Innovation Managing Self & Others Managing Change & Innovation ELECTIVE MODULES Supply Chain Management Talking to Teams Internationalisation Energy Finance THE WORK-BASED PROJECT Should you elect to undertake a work-based project in addition to the 8 core courses, you will be allocated a project tutor as you approach completion of these courses. This tutor will then work with you and your employer to define a suitable project that contains appropriate challenges and is a realistically achievable subject to choose. To give you a clear idea of how a module works in practice here s a breakdown of the Business Strategy module: Each module is delivered by the Academic team working in partnership with an Honorary Executive Fellow from our Professional Faculty. This partnership ensures an industry-true learning experience for those working through the module. It s about keeping things real, that way the knowledge you gain can be used to add value directly back into the energy industry. For Business Strategy, the module is delivered by the Director of the Graduate Business School, Russell Williams, with the support of one of our Honorary Executive Faculty, Glenn Corr, Director, Maersk Oil Ltd. After providing an overview of some core strategy ideas and frameworks, the module quickly moves you to action-orientated learning. Working in teams, you will first take on the role of an Exploration and Production (E&P) Analyst working in a simulated oil and gas company. The company has an existing portfolio of assets, but has just received an opportunity to become a co-venturer in a new oil/gas prospect. As the E&P Analyst, your task will be to process all the information received, research out a little more information and make a recommendation to the Board. This will take the form of a presentation and short report, after which, you ll move on to another role. You re then tasked with thinking about and managing the strategic plan for the company s portfolio of assets reacting to change and revising your plan as events unfold. Finally, our real-world simulation immerses you in another key issue for the business partnering. The company has joint operating agreements for some of its assets. So you ll need to consider the resulting issues and think about a strategy to manage these often complex partner relationships. The aim of these realistic industry simulations is to give you an up close and personal insight into how many oil and gas companies operate and manage their businesses today. And hopefully a glimpse of how they ll do it tomorrow. To demonstrate your understanding of how oil and gas companies operate, we will then ask you to produce a short individual piece of work that will go into your assessment portfolio. Even full-time employees in the energy business don t usually enjoy the mentoring of a senior industry professional for a whole year. But that s just what our students enjoy on the MBA Energy Management programme. For the whole programme, you re matched with an Honorary Executive Fellow from our Professional Faculty as a personal mentor. Imagine the valuable insights and connections you ll learn. Now imagine how much of an advantage that gives you a year down the line when you re applying for posts in the industry. Just one reason why coming to the University of Aberdeen is such a clever move. WE CALL IT LEARNING FROM LEADERS Learning from leaders really is a no brainer if you re serious about succeeding in the energy sector. This senior industry professional will be assigned to help you develop your real-world skills and give feedback so your learning curve will be rapid and above all, relevant. The Professional Faculty is designed to connect you, the student, with a senior industry professional from the business community thus forming a powerful learning dynamic. Our Honorary Executive Fellows provide the vital link to the industry you need to access. BUSINESS ECONOMICS: Provides the knowledge to be comfortable with the tools of economic analysis as applied to the international, economic and business environments in which modern day businesses and policy makers have to operate. BUSINESS STRATEGY & ORGANISATION: Introduces strategy theories and applications in order to equip students with the theories, concepts and techniques of analysis that are essential for analysis of where the organisation is, where it wants to be and how it will get there. STRATEGIC MARKETING: Equips students with knowledge of marketing management and strategic planning across a range of organisational settings, including consumer, industrial, service and voluntary sectors. MANAGING PEOPLE AT WORK: Recognises that people are the most complex of all organisational resources to manage. As such the theoretical and practical issues of people management in the contemporary competitive economic environment are the focus. HOW IS ALL THIS DELIVERED? The University of Aberdeen MBA is focused on the real needs of business. So as you d expect, we ll give you thorough understanding of the core knowledge areas of business and management. But we do this in a refreshingly different way. The structure of learning is formed around a number of intensive teaching blocks. These range from formal lectures, group discussions, industry-real role-plays, simulation exercises and project work. The emphasis is on experiential learning. HOW AM I ASSESSED? Our modules are assessed entirely by coursework so for example, students are required to produce reports, briefing notes, presentations and reflective journals, which help you build up a personalised portfolio of experience tangible proof that you ve acquired key business skills and knowledge and something we know that prospective employers find very useful! WHAT CAREER ROUTES COULD THAT OPEN UP? By promoting action-oriented teaching techniques this dynamic MBA develops a cross-disciplinary knowledge of business and a challenging inquisitive nature in students to prepare them for wide range of management careers in the private and public sectors or in founding a national or global start-up. Studying an MBA at the University of Aberdeen has been both a significant challenge and a remarkable learning experience. After being away from education for more than 7 years (working in my home country, Venezuela), what a magnificent finding it is to rediscover how studying can change you in positive ways and how the interaction with fellows from a range of cultures increases the size of your world map, both in terms of new and valuable friendships and in terms of cultural understanding. Not only does the University possess high quality teachers and convenient facilities, it also becomes the door which you are invited to open in order to explore and find knowledge to become critical and to create. The City of Aberdeen, on the other hand, delivers what promises, and even more. A beautiful coastal city which has it all: entertainment, art, proximity to amazing landscapes and towns and, of course, those incredible views of the beach. After the completion of the MBA programme, I would like to keep working some more years in the service industry, leading a challenging business unit. Later on, I would like to set up my own business: after all, I feel more confident in my knowledge and skills, and I am positive they will be key to success in the business environment. THIRD SEMESTER MANAGING CHANGE AND INNOVATION: Enables students to understand the context of innovation and change by examining a number of key topics, including the development of new products(goods and services) and developing the business case for innovation and delivering change. THE LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Investigates the underlying theories which underpin the popular views about leadership. Activities also enable students to assess their own leadership style and competencies. In the third semester, students undertake to explore three elective models from a selected range of business topics here are some of the previous choices: Essential Human Resource Practices International Business International Marketing E-Business Talking to Teams Strategic Financial Analysis. Here s an A-Z ( Y actually, we re still working on the Z!) of the places our recent graduates are now working: Accenture Andrews and Bruce Bank of Scotland Cape Centrica Cognizant Technology [Bangalore] Conoco Phillips KPMG High Speed 2 RBG Ltd Shell Standard Chartered Bank Symetri Tata Talisman Yes Bank [India] Javier Eduardo Garcia Graduate These modules are followed by one compulsory module in New Venture Creation. The aim of this module is to equip students with an understanding of the key aspects of new venture creation, including business planning, pitching new ideas to investors and managing growth. This is a capstone course, by bringing together a range of different concepts.

17 MSc (ECON) ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE MSc (ECON) ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE 33 Want to bring forward your skills in finance? We ll BROADEN your knowledge to help you DEFINE your future. WHO IS THIS PROGRAMME AIMED AT? If you are looking to progress into a financial or accounting career, this MSc gives you the skills and the vision to get there. You may have recently graduated, but feel the subject you graduated in has its limits. Equally, you might be already in work, yet just feel that a new start in accountancy or finance would be a more rewarding career path. Whatever your reasons, our highly-trained, commerciallysavvy academics are here to help you make that change. We attract students from over 15 nationalities onto the programme which makes it a truly international experience and a great opportunity to network on a global scale whilst you re with us. WHAT SETS THIS PROGRAMME APART? It s a fair question, after all there s more than one MSc in Accountancy and Finance in the world. So what is it that makes this Masters special? In actual fact there are two things. Firstly, we ensure a credible academic framework. Then, we give it a commercial edge. By fusing together academic rigour with commercial reality, we have created a Masters programme that s relevant to the real financial world. That makes this degree programme unique because unlike other degree programmes that will show you how it s done we ll also explore why are we doing it this way? In a fast-changing world, we can t rely on rulebooks and manuals to give us all the answers. That s why, at the University of Aberdeen, we encourage a more questioning, more analytical approach, where we get you to really think things through, adapt to changing circumstances and create better, more relevant solutions for the real world. After all, it is in the real world that you ll be looking for work. HOW ARE MY SKILLS ENHANCED? You pick up International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) knowledge before graduation. As Head of Careers at the University of Aberdeen, Peter Fantom, says: Current accounting students with IFRS education, experience or knowledge should highlight it at the top of their CV. It shows you re current on trends and standards. Given the growing globalization in the accounting curriculum, the way we teach helps prepare you for work by mixing the theory with the practical professional knowledge your future employers will be seeking. So we incorporated high quality, global professional qualifications into the curriculum from the prestigious Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). Our professional module, the International Financial Reporting Standards Certificate (the IFRS certificate) delivers the required knowledge to help you operate as an international player within global capital markets by improving the quality of your reporting. Through a blend of traditional teaching methods, computer lab-based time and more contemporary learning techniques, we ll help advance your financial skills and give you a competitive edge when it comes to finding a job in an ever-changing world. The programme also includes an opportunity to earn the Thomson Reuters Eikon and Datastream certificates (see page 13), which will demonstrate your ability to handle professional investing tools. Should you not wish to take the IFRS, we ve built-in a research-based module instead, which could lead towards a PhD.
