5 Course Details - Saturday, October 3, 2015 Why Can t We All Get Along? A.J. Heightman This presentation addresses paid vs. volunteer, BLS vs. ALS, and the myriad of EMS, police, fire and dispatch issues that exist in many areas. A.J. Heightman will discuss the disconnects that frequently occur on scene between these combinations of providers and care as well as during each specialty s ( vertical ) training. This lecture addresses it all and offers solutions to improve relationships on the street and in the classroom, and, more importantly, ways to improve the delivery of care on scene to maximize resources and results. The Fifth Vital Sign James Williams One of the oldest and most basic roles of the healthcare provider is to alleviate pain. Approximately 90% of the patients we treat have a primary symptom of pain. Although different types of pain may be associated with specific medical or traumatic conditions, the goal of treatment still remains at alleviating our patients discomfort and treating the underlying conditions. This session explores the pathophysiology of pain, methods of measuring pain, standard pain treatments, and explores alternative therapies for pain management. 1. ID pathophysiology of pain. 2. Determine the different means of quantifying a patient s pain. 3. Identify standard pain treatment modalities. 4. Explore alternative, non-pharmacological, treatments. Crime Scene Management Rick Sywassink Upon completion of the Crime Scene Management for EMS, the student will be able to understand the following: (not all inclusive) 1. Recognize the agencies that may respond to report of a death and the responsibilities of each agency and their personnel. 2. Recognize the safe response, safe approaches and indications of potential problems that could confront responders. 3. Defining and recognizing what a crime scene is, its size and the scope. 4. Recognizing what evidence is, preventing its destruction, and how to address other evidentiary matters that may arise while at the scene or during transport of a live victim. 5. Precautions to be taken at special scenes, such as correctional institutes. The goal of the presentation is to not only make responders aware of problems that could arise, but to foster cooperation among the various agencies involved in a death scene, and above all to keep the responder safe in the execution of their duties. I m Safe, Are They? James Williams From the first day that an individual begins their career in EMS, scene safety and the safety of themselves and their crew is hammered into their heads and seared upon their brains. Ask any EMS student their first actions on a scene, and they will normally answer Is the scene safe? However, how much thought or consideration is put into patient safety? Is patient safety as automatic as the EMT asking is the scene safe? This session will discuss several areas where pre-hospital providers can enhance and ensure that the patients they are caring for are safe, and reach the hospital in no worse a condition than what they are on the initial assessment. 1. ID the root causes of patient safety errors. 2. ID patient safety issues. 3. ID steps to be taken to eliminate errors. 4. Describe a means to report errors.

6 Unavoidable Stress: The Unrecognized Epidemic A.J. Heightman The world of public safety can be challenging, stressful and full of rewards. Everyday firefighters, EMT s Paramedics and nurses witness traumatic situations. No matter how long you have been in our line of work, you never become immune to the tragedies and human suffering you witness. As time goes on, either you learn to cope with these scenes better or you head rapidly towards a breaking point. Laughter and discussing inner thoughts help. But are these true answers to solve our problem? For some, yes and for others, no. This session is full of excitement, laughter, and motivation. Laughing with brothers and sisters of our profession will give you a few tools to pull from when you are in need of a shoulder to lean on. This presentation will examine several types of incidents that present similar stressors. By the end of this presentation you will have a better understanding on how to survive happily and healthily in the world of public safety. 600 Seconds EMS Patient Care Topics TBA Topics will be on subjects related to patient care in the EMS field. There should be approximately six topics, 10 min each. The committee has received a lot of positive comments from students about this class. Evaluation from the conferences have also been very positive for the last several years Course Details - Sunday, October 4, 2015 Hey Ya ll, You re Not Gonna Believe What I Just Went On James Williams Being aware of the situation around you and understanding its implications is the foundation to assessment and decision making. Unfortunately, key decisions are often made for all the wrong reasons or because people are simply unaware of the consequences. This hard hitting presentation uses a series of real case studies to make participants aware of the dangers involved in numerous rescue environments and crucial decisions that rescuers must make. Golden Care: Understanding Critical Components in the Care of Geriatric Patients A.J. Heightman Golden Care is a comprehensive look at the aging population EMS providers can expect to see in increasing numbers over the next decade. This lecture covers the problems EMS personnel encountered in assessing and treating geriatric patients and helpful assessment and treatment tips providers can use when encountering this unique patient population. Patients over the age of 65 represent the largest population transported by ambulance in the United States. Many EMS programs do not spend extra time review the important changes that occur as a person ages. The elderly cope with stress, trauma and illness in ways that are distinctly different from children and adults under 65. A.J. will zero in on these important differences and leave you with important information that will help you assess and treat this high-priority patient population.

7 Where Are We Going? James Williams EMS is a profession on the move! We are growing as a profession and numerous organizations have produced documents that pave the way to the future. The National Education Standards, National Scope of Practice, and EMS agenda for the future, and even the Affordable Care Act have been out there, but many providers are not aware of them, much less understand why our profession is changing. Join James for an informative and interactive session as he explains how these documents have impacted us and guide our future. 1. Discuss current changes that are guiding us to the future. 2. Discuss the national education standards. 3. Discuss healthcare reform. 4. Discuss the national scope of practice. 5. Discuss our immediate and future impact of these concepts. American Heart Association, Improving Heart Attack Systems in Rural Areas Gary Myers Mission: Lifeline is the American Heart Association s National initiative to improve overall care and outcomes for ST-Elevation MI (STEMI) patients. In Iowa, through 12-Lead ECG equipment grant opportunities, education, public awareness, guideline development, and system development work between hospitals and EMS agencies, Mission: Lifeline will focus on improving heart attack systems of care in rural areas. This session will be an explanation of Mission: Lifeline, progress to date, and how EMS should be involved. 600 Seconds EMS Patient Care Topics TBA Topics will be on subjects related to patient care in the EMS field. There should be approximately six topics, 10 min each. The committee has received a lot of positive comments from students about this class.
