7 HEALTH AND MEDICAL INFORMATION This booklet contains medical information for official employees of the U.S. Government. It should be kept near your telephone for reference. The Embassy Health Unit is located in the basement of the main chancery. The direct telephone number is Newly arrived personnel are requested to discuss health problems and procedures with the Health Unit personnel soon after arrival at Post. 8 MEDICATIONS M/MED has asked that individuals at Post be reminded that they have a responsibility to provide their own medications required for chronic medical conditions. This applies to prescription and non-prescription (over-the-counter) medications. Employees may obtain these via pouch or APO. Employees are urged to make the necessary arrangements with their doctor/pharmacy for adequate re-supply while at Post. The RMO has advised the NEX store to stock an adequate supply of over-the-counter (non-prescription) medications for your use. These commonly used medications -- Aspirin, Tylenol, Advil, sunscreens, antacids, decongestants, and cough medications will not be routinely dispensed by the Health Unit for stocking or restocking of personal medicine cabinets. Embassy personnel on long-term medication can have their prescriptions written by the RMO when he visits Madrid or by Dr. Peralba and filled by a pharmacy in the U.S. Prescriptions can also be written by Dr. Peralba and filled locally using the Spanish equivalent drug. Listed below are five pharmacies in Washington, D.C. that will send prescriptions through the mail. They will air pouch your medications and bill your credit card. Tel.: FLUORIDE In Madrid we do not have the benefit of community water fluoridation. As a result, supplemental fluoride should be considered for the years when permanent teeth are forming. Fluoride drops are recommended for infants from 6 months until they are able to chew fluoride tablets; fluoride tablets are recommended for children from 3 years of age until 12. The Health Unit can supply fluoride drops and/or tablets. Because of the increased use of fluoride toothpaste and rinses, some children have been getting too much fluoride. This can cause fluorosis a permanent staining of the teeth. As a result, the recommended dose of fluoride has been lowered to a level different from what you may have been given before. Check with the Health Unit if you have questions about the proper fluoride dosage. 15 In cases--and whenever possible in emergency situations--the Regional Medical Officer recommends that Embassy Americans and their families utilize La CLINICA de la Concepción (Avenida de los Reyes Católicos, 2) for hospitalizations and emergency care. The hospital under the administrative and financial auspices of the Fundación Jimenez Diaz; is a university teaching hospital and it is prepared to do virtually everything as any major medical center in the United States. The hospital's emergency facilities are well equipped and fully capable of providing excellent care in treating life-threatening situations, 24 hours a day. They are prepared to assist Embassy staff with medical emergencies as well as with routine appointments. Most of the medical staff at the hospital speak English or are able to locate English speaking assistance close at hand. The hospital is located just off the Plaza de Cristo Rey on the west side of Madrid near where the N-VI La Coruña highway enters the city. The full name and address of the facility is: Clinica de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción Fundación Jiménez Díaz Avenida de los Reyes Católicos, 2 Tel.: Given Madrid's often-difficult driving conditions, the time required at various times of the day to reach emergency medical facilities can be critical. Every second is precious in an emergency situation. The Embassy strongly recommends that everyone be familiar with the location of their nearest medical facility for life-threatening situations and in addition the location of la Clinica de la Concepción. Know the best route to follow by automobile to reach emergency care from your residence and the specific location of the emergency room ("Urgencias") at the facility. It is good practice to take the time to make a "test run" to the facility with other family members of driving age. Medical identification cards are provided by the Personnel Office to Embassy employees, spouses, and dependents over age 16, whose agencies participate in the Department of State Medical Program. TRICARE will cover dependents and retired military personnel under specific situations. The program is divided into two areas of coverage: outpatient care and inpatient care. In Spain, most physicians and hospitals do not accept direct TRICARE payments: therefore, it is incumbent upon the patient or a sponsor to pay the bill in full at the time services is rendered and then seek reimbursement. Military members under ICASS need to see the Embassy physician first, who will refer as needed to outside physicians.
