SIMS Whiteboard Goar Gasparian Technical Specialist October 27 th, 2009

What is Whiteboard? Electronic version of old grease board. Displays relevant, real time patient information in a single, highly visible, user friendly display. With a quick glance at the Whiteboard, one can get an accurate snapshot view of current patient activity in unit. Improves and standardizes communication within care teams. Developed in house by SIMS Systems Engineering Java Team 2

Whiteboard Data Sources EPR (Electronic Patient Record; formerly Misys) CPR (Clinical Patient Repository) PHS (Pathways Healthcare Scheduling system) CAPS (Cardiology Scheduler) ORSOS (McKesson Surgery software) PCS (Patient Care System) 3

Whiteboard Locations Toronto General Hospital Emergency Department General Internal Medicine Unit Ambulatory Cardiac/Vascular Care Unit Princess Margaret Hospital Transfusion Clinic, Blood Bank and Pharmacy Toronto Western Hospital Emergency Department General Internal Medicine Unit Operating Room Krembil Neuroscience Centre West Park Healthcare Centre All Inpatient Units Women s College Hospital Urgent Care Centre and Clinical Decision Units 4

Whiteboard Pre & Post State x Communication Gaps and difficult to find information relevant to patients plan of care x Informal Communication not captured and not shared with patients care team Centralized Communication tool for all clinicians to use New information available that was never formally communicated 5

Realized Benefits Reduced time searching for patient information Facilitated communication between different patient care units Enhanced communication between nurses allows for greater ease of patient care Improved discharge planning process triggered by standardized information requirements (CCAC and ALC referral status, estimated discharge date) Patient Privacy is protected with elimination of old grease boards Automatic updates when labs/rads results are available Provides time stamps for various actions and statuses Less time spent on updating grease board, more time spent on attending to patient needs Leads to a revision and streamlining of work flow in unit, improving work practice 6
