1 Executive Masters in Healthcare Administration Annual Learning Outcomes Assessment Report Assessment Report Page 1

2 % of students Introduction The Executive Masters in Healthcare Administration (EMHCA) managed to maintain 100 per cent fidelity to its 2013/14 assessment plan. During this period two graduate program-learning outcomes (GPLOs) were assessed: (1) Evidence based management and decision-making (EBM) and (2) Corporate and clinical governance (CG). EBM was assessed, as planned, as part of the EMHCA 605 course, Quantitative Methods and Computing for Managers (Cohort 10). CG, also according to schedule was assessed as part of EMHCA 610 course, Quality Improvement in Health Care (Cohort 9). GPLO Assessed Evidence based management and decision-making (EBM) (1) Graduates will demonstrate the skills required for making evidence based administrative and policy decisions. (2) They will also demonstrate the ability to transform data into actionable intelligence. Assessment Method & Point The assessment method was a section of an exam paper, asking participants (N= 21) to transform data (hospital admissions data) into actionable intelligence, and then decide on admission and length of stay criteria for a stroke unit. In short, students are asked to make data driven, evidence based management decisions. EMHCA (605) Quantitative Methods and Computing for Managers Target Our target was that 80% of participants would obtain a score of 80% or greater on this section. The 80% (B-) target reflects our desire to be above average in this domain, whilst also allowing significant room for growth and improvement. Findings & Analysis Evidence Based Managment (EMHCA 605, Fall 2015, N=21, % at or above Target) Data Transformation Decision Making Overall Assessment Report Page 2

3 This graph displays the outcome of the assessment, with per cent reaching the desired target for EBM overall. Decision-making is contingent upon correct data transformation (statistical analysis) hence the slightly higher score (i.e. decision was correct but based on an error in the earlier stage of data transformation). This result falls short of the desired 80 per cent target, suggesting remedial actions may be required to strengthen the quantitative analytical abilities of EMHCA students. Communication & Dissemination of Results These assessment findings were initially shared with all members of the program via (instructors are from 5 different institutions in the US and UAE). Input was requested as to interpretation and possible ideas for program improvement specific to this outcome. Actions & Follow up After discussion with faculty and student it was decided that additional quantitative analytic workshops (SPSS) should be made available to EMHCA students. These additional workshops would be voluntary, however those weakest in this domain would almost certainly welcome the extra tuition. The workshops are scheduled to be delivered by the EMHCA graduate assistant in Fall GPLO Assessed Corporate and clinical governance (CG) Graduates will demonstrate (1) an understanding of transparency, autonomy and accountability in both clinical and corporate contexts. (2) They will also demonstrate the knowledge and skills essential for making significant contributions to continuous quality improvement. Assessment Method & Point The assessment method was an assignment (module 3 Team Six-Sigma), (1) asking participants (N = 27) devise methods of identifying and quantifying problems (e.g. medication errors). (2) Participants are also expected to identify the causes of the problem and identify means of addressing the issue thereby improving quality EMHCA (605) Quantitative Methods and Computing for Managers Target Our target was that 80% of participants would obtain a score of 80% or greater on this section. 4 % of students Findings & Analysis Clinical & Corporate Governance (EMHCA 610, Fall 2015, N=28, % at or above Target) Governance Quality Overall This graph displays the outcome of the assessment, with per cent of students reaching the desired target for CGM overall. This result exceeds the desired 80 per cent target, suggesting that no remedial actions are required. Note: It might be that areas such as clinical quality are very close to the current working roles of the bulk of EMHCA students (Drs, Nurses) whereas statistics computing etc. is far less familiar.
