1 GS 1181.F14: Sports Champions & Their Sponsors COURSE DESCRIPTION/OVERVIEW In this course, students will read various articles and books that describe the journeys of those athletes who have reached high points of success in sports, as well as the marketing efforts that have communicated their achievements in order to promote products and services. This course will include article and book research on various sports champions, by each student, with a class presentation by each student of an athlete of their choice. The application of these skills will help improve and develop research, writing, and presentation skills necessary for success at the university level. Like many, the instructor was introduced to sports at a young age in the city of Houston, where she became so passionate about running that she followed her dreams to Angelo State and joined the cross-country/track teams. This ASU professor led both the 1989 and 1990 ASU Cross-Country teams to Lone Star Conference and South Region CC Championships; they hold the honor of being the first ASU cross-country women s team to qualify for nationals and doing so with the extraordinary feat of scoring a perfect 15 in both championship meets! Years later, this ASU professor followed another passion in the sport of taekwondo where she competed regularly at national tournaments in the American Taekwondo Association, the world s largest martial arts organization. As a first degree and third degree black belt, she held the title as World Champion in 2007 and 2011, respectively. The thirst for success is hard to quench for many. In this course, students will explore sports champions and the unique and various avenues taken in their journey for gold. Students are encouraged to share personal experiences and class findings through written/oral presentations. Course Technology Students should be familiar with the use of Microsoft Office Word and PowerPoint (or other acceptable presentation) software and have access to Angelo State University Blackboard. 2 Course Objectives Course Objectives The objectives of this course are for you to develop applicable knowledge in regard to: Critical Thinking (CT1): Gather, analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information relevant to sports champions. Communication Skills (CS1, CS2): Develop, interpret, and express ideas related to sports champions through effective written and oral communication. Personal Responsibility (PR1): Demonstrate the ability to evaluate choices, actions and consequences as related to ethical decision-making. Social Responsibility (SR3): Demonstrate the ability to engage effectively in the campus community. Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, you should be able to: Summarize and evaluate information; Use the library s resources and other electronic databases to gather information; Reflect and articulate an understanding of course material through written, visual, or oral communication assignments; Engage with the university community through sports events; and Use campus resources effectively. Method of Assessing Learning Outcomes Core student learning outcomes will be assessed through course assignments. Course Requirements Two article summaries (related to sports champions and their sponsors) Information Literacy (Blackboard tutorials and Literacy Instruction session) Participation in a university or college-wide sporting event (see attached sports events schedule) Required Materials /Internet/Computers: You have access to these as ASU students. Activate your account and be sure to check your frequently to receive notices/information from professors regarding your courses. Blackboard Account: This tool is a course management system used to track all courses. Professors will update grades, assignments, and post information to assist you in your classes. Be sure you know how to navigate Blackboard. There is not a required textbook for this course. However, you will be required to access articles and websites to complete course assignments. 3 The library has a subscription to the paper copies of the Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, and Referee. You can also read and report on articles from those hard copy magazines. Grading Policies This course employs the following to measure student learning: Blackboard Tutorials (8) Oral Presentation: Favorite Sports Story Written Summary: MJ s Top Ten Written Reflection: Field Study Summary: Mr. Nevil Shadow Shed Article/Group discussion Sports Event: Attendance/Summary Presentation of Research Total Points 100 points 100 points 500 points The final grade is determined from the cumulative points of the various assignments. The grading system is as follows: points = A points = B points = C points = D points = F Course Policies Academic Honesty and Integrity Angelo State University expects its students to maintain complete honesty and integrity in their academic pursuits. It is the professor s intention to be as fair and impartial as is humanly possible. Please make sure you inform the professor as soon as any situation arises. Do NOT wait until the problem is compounded by poor class performance, poor attendance, etc. Academic integrity is expected. This includes, but is not limited to, any form of cheating, plagiarism, unauthorized sharing of work, or unauthorized possession of course materials. The professor assumes that all students can be trusted. Please do not violate this trust. Violation of academic integrity will result in a failing grade for the course.

The use of profanity & harassment of any form is strictly prohibited (Zero Tolerance), as are those remarks concerning one's ethnicity, life style, race (ethnicity), religion, etc.; violations of these rules will result in immediate dismissal from the course. The Student Life Office will establish the particular documentation requirements necessary for the various types of disabilities. Attendance Attendance is required and students are expected to take notes, complete assignments on time, and seek help when necessary. Religious Holy Day Observance As stated in the Angelo State University Operating Policy and Procedure (OP Student Absence for Observance of Religious Holy Day), a student who intends to observe a religious holy day should make that intention known in writing to the instructor prior to the absence. A student who is absent from classes for the observance of a religious holy day shall be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time after the absence. Course Drop To view information about how to drop this course or to calculate important dates relevant to dropping this course, you can visit Incomplete as a Course Grade As stated in the Angelo State University Operating Policy and Procedure (OP Grading Procedures), the grade I is given when the student is unable to complete the course because of illness or personal misfortune. An I that is not removed before the end of the next long semester automatically becomes an F. A graduate student will be allowed one year to remove a grade of I before it automatically becomes an F. To graduate from ASU, a student must complete all I s. Grade Appeal Process As stated in the Angelo State University Operating Policy and Procedure (OP Student Grade Grievances), a student who believes that he or she has not been held to appropriate academic standards as outlined in the class syllabus, equitable evaluation procedures, or appropriate grading, may appeal the final grade given in the course. The burden of proof is upon the student to demonstrate the appropriateness of the appeal. A student with a complaint about a grade is encouraged to first discuss the matter with the instructor.
