2 2010 Student Association The Health Services Management and Leadership (HSML) Student Association is proud to present this year s candidates for residency and internship. In addition, we are proud to showcase some of our students who have recently completed or are currently completing their residencies. The HSML Student Association is a recognized student organization at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services with a rich tradition of experiential learning. The Student Association provides students with various networking, social, and professional development activities throughout the year. The majority of our students are members of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) who participate with the local ACHE chapter, National Capital Healthcare Executives (NCHE). The Student Association successfully connects our strong alumni base with students through local site visits, alumni mentoring, CEO Roundtables and the Executive-In-Residence (EIR) program. The EIR program allows students to interact with healthcare professionals to discuss career goals, conduct mock interviews, and participate in resume reviews. The Student Association also promotes a Student-Alumni Mentoring Program, which matches students with healthcare professionals who share similar professional aspirations. In the spirit of continuing the longstanding tradition within the Health Services Administration program, the Student Association executed several initiatives throughout the past academic year. In March 2010, the Student Association had a strong presence at ACHE Congress on Healthcare Leadership where the association introduced a redesigned GW booth. The Student Association also sponsored a CEO Roundtable where current GW hospital CEOs visited campus to share leadership insights with students in a question and answer format. The association continues to maintain a student website that is accessed at In addition to networking, students are encouraged to visit local hospitals, healthcare consulting firms, and long-term healthcare facilities to gain knowledge that can only be obtained through the face-to-face interaction with those professionals in the field. Many students also participated in a variety of Capital Hill hearings and activities. The Student Association is also in the process of developing an enhanced new student orientation program, which includes a revised student handbook. It is the Student Association s hope that you find value in the annual Resume Book. Please feel free to contact any of the students listed in this year s resume book for additional information. 5 Dear Colleague: Continuing our long-standing tradition of the Healthcare Administration Program at The George Washington University, we present our 2010 Resume Book. We are proud of our traditions and our fifty continuous years of educating the future health care leaders and administrators. The goal of this Resume Book is to showcase our students as they begin their search for a residency. In this past academic year, the Department of Health Services Management and Leadership (HSML) continued to work to enhance our Master of Health Services Administration (MHSA) program. As chair and program director, we are supported by our distinguished full-time faculty- Dr. Kurt Darr, Dr. Steven Eastaugh and Dr. Bianca Frogner. Dr. Brian Biles and Dr. Josef Reum are our senior faculty members who spend part of their time teaching in the department. Together with our growing adjunct faculty and our alumni, the department maintains a strong commitment to promote excellence. As a way to increase alumni involvement in the program, last year three alumni, Arthur Shorr, Bill Philips and Dr. Amit Powar, each successfully taught intensive one credit courses. We hope to increase that number each year. Our three-year program is truly a partnership among the students, the faculty, and the alumni. Without alumni this program would be unable to achieve our quest for continuous quality improvement. Our program is comprised of two years in the classroom and one year in a supervised residency at an approved health service organization. As a department, we all agree that a one-year residency ensures career excellence. The residency provides an opportunity for students to put classroom theories into practice as they gain invaluable insights under the watchful eyes of dedicated preceptors in the field. Upon graduation, due to their residency experience, our graduates have the skills and experience to hit the ground running. This Resume Book demonstrates our commitment to the residency program. Upon your review of the Resume Book, you will see that our students are their own best publicity. We share and encourage their enthusiasm and commitment to skills development, especially in the workplace. Last year, GW MHSA students were placed in strong residency programs across the country. We look forward to continued success in assisting the students listed in this book to obtain the best residency for each of them. The Resume Book contains the relevant information on our students who will be seeking residencies and internships in It is our goal to circulate our book to our alumni and colleagues at healthcare organizations across the country. The GW MHSA program comprises a truly talented group of students. We hope that you recognize a fit between your organization and one of these outstanding students. You are encouraged to communicate directly with a student whose resume matches your requirements. If you have other questions, please contact either one of us via . Thank you for your interest in our graduate program in Health Services Administration. Sincerely, Robert E. Burke, PhD Chair, The Dr. Gordon A. Friesen Professor of Health Care Administration, and Residency Director pro tem Leonard H. Friedman, PhD, MPH Program Director and Professor 1

6 Department of Health Services Management and Leadership Program History Hospitals and other healthcare institutions are complex organizations that require specialized leaders trained in health services to deal with those complexities. At The George Washington University, training healthcare leaders took root in the Fall of 1959 when President Thomas H. Carroll approved an MBA program in Hospital Administration, housed in the then School of Government, Business, and International Affairs. The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services was formally established on July 1, Soon to celebrate its 50th anniversary as a program, GW remains the only university in Washington DC with a school of public health and the first school of public health and health services in the nation. Together with the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, its offices are located in The George Washington University Medical Center. Today, the field of health services administration encompasses the training of healthcare specialists in administration, education, organization, and community advisement. GW s expansion of programs in these areas will help keep pace with the expected rise in medical needs of an ageing population. GW HSML Alumni Association The George Washington Health Services Management and Leadership Alumni Association (HSMLAA) has over 4,000 graduates and is one of the largest and most successful programs in the United States. Over 1,200 members of HSMLAA are also members of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). Our graduates are key healthcare leaders and represent more than 600 senior executives in hospital management, long-term care administration, managed care organizations, consulting, association management, banking and finance, and other sectors of the healthcare delivery system. Our membership spans all 50 States and 19 foreign countries. Program Overview While learning in the heart of Washington, DC, the Master of Health Services Administration (MHSA) candidates are given the opportunity to expand their knowledge and leadership skills through dynamic regional interaction. The HSML department offers a professional and energetic atmosphere of students, faculty, and staff who are committed to education and research within the health services field. With a rich history and an alumni base of over 4,000 healthcare executives, GW s graduates are well equipped to be leaders in health services administration. The Department of Health Services Management and Leadership offers a Master of Health Services Administration to prepare students for the challenges of delivering quality health services. Unique aspects of the HSML Department and the MHSA Program are the following: Interdisciplinary community service program comprised of medical, nursing, physical therapy, and public health students, called ISCOPES; Residencies and internships in health management and consulting organizations for academic credit; Alumni mentoring program and assistance by alumni in career development and placement; Active student association which participates in a number of local and national professional associations. For more information, please refer to the HSML website: 2 The Department of Health Services Management and Leadership

8 Our Residency Program The hallmark of GW s HSML department is our residency program. After students complete their didactic education, they enter into a one-year, full-time position within a healthcare organization. The program, based on the invaluable benefits of experiential learning, allows MHSA candidates to directly apply their classroom knowledge and problem-solving abilities in a real-world setting. A senior healthcare executive serves as a mentor to the resident. An alternative option to the residency is a three-credit internship along with additional classes completed during the final semester on-campus. National residency placements are based on the student s individual career objectives, academic/professional background, and personal preferences. In addition to providing a unique opportunity for GW students, the residency offers the healthcare organization a considerable number of benefits. The program s curriculum provides students with a strong base of fundamental skills as well as best practices found in today s leading healthcare organizations. Students bring enthusiasm and excitement as well as willingness to learn and grow in their administrative residency or internship. 4 The Department of Health Services Management and Leadership
