Photovoltaic off-grid solutions help to supervise China's traffic. 122 remote monitoring systems along the 28 kilometers of the ShuGang highway from HuangDao to JiaoNan are powered by Phocos PL series charge controllers. Consequently, China ranks just behind Africa and the Middle East with the highest traffic accident rates (20.5 dead per 100,000 inhabitants). The system integrator installed 122 off-grid monitoring applications along the 28-kilometer highway from HuangDao to Jiao Nan, located on the peninsula Jiaodong in the Qingdao district in northeast China. Now, Shangdong Hi-Speed can easily observe the highway from three central offices. Each system is equipped with a 480 watt solar panel, a 500 Ah (24 V) lead-sealed battery, two cameras, and a PL20 charge controller from Phocos, which regulates the energy for the entire system. It regulates the power from the panel to the battery and from the battery to the camera. Furthermore, the PL20 controls the energy from the solar panel to the integrated communications modem and the optical transmitter, thereby ensuring the reliable transfer of videos to the control centers. Thanks to the PL charge controller, users receive a complete overview of charge cycles as well as information about past and actual battery performance. The PL can be integrated in 12, 24, 32, 36, or 48 volt systems, making it the ideal solution for many PV applications. 4 A technician from the system integrator, China PV New Energy Technology Co. Ltd., inspects the off-grid highway monitoring system. Before the installation of the monitoring system in November 2013, two people had to drive along the 28-kilometer road all day long. At this time, it was only possible to control the traffic flow at certain points. During their surveillance drive, the employees were often stuck in traffic jams, losing the overview of traffic flow and wasting working time. While onsite, Phocos also spoke with Mr. Zheng, department manager at the traffic control centre. He says: Now, the 244 swiveling cameras from the 122 remote monitoring systems pass video to the three control centers, allowing our control center employees to reliably supervise accidents, traffic jams, or the toll station. Even the number of vehicles can be measured comfortably from the bases. He continues: Compared with the previous situation, the monitoring systems offer more convenience, reduce working time and staff, and save money. Mrs. Sun, an employee at the control center, adds: Thanks to the remote monitoring system, traffic control is very easy. Over 20 monitors in the office display all 28 kilometers of the road.
