5 Introduction The year 2011 was a year of special importance for the relations between Brazil and the Netherlands, it was the Ano da Holanda no Brasil, the Year of Holland in Brazil. Brazil is an emerging world power, both politically and economically, and of growing importance to the Netherlands. In its turn, the Netherlands are an important entry for Brazilian exports to Europe, and the Netherlands is one of the biggest investors in Brazil. The 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games will give an extra stimulus to the development of Brazil. Strong growth is being measured in Brazil, specifically in sectors in which the Netherlands excel, such as logistics, transport, fuels, chemicals, agriculture, science and technology and design. Both countries share special cultural ties since the times of Maurice of Nassau in the 17th century. The city of Carambeí, one of the Dutch agricultural settlements in Brazil, celebrated its 100th anniversary in We thought these were all good reasons to celebrate with some special events and to use our slogan for the year Experimente! or Experience it! On March 4th, 2011, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff signed a law into effect which officially declared 2011 Ano da Holanda no Brasil. Later on the Government of the State of Pernambuco held a special session and declared the Ano da Holanda no Brasil in the State of Pernambuco. Events took place all over Brazil but mostly in the 3 bigger cities: Brasília, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and in the Dutch agricultural settlements. Some events were organized by either the Embassy or the Consulates General, other events were organized by third parties. Sometimes these third parties were given some of our funds, sometimes they included the Ano da Holanda logo and a letter of support of the Ambassador or Consul General sufficed. This booklet will give an overview of the events that took place during this special year. The project Ano da Holanda no Brasil was realized with funds allocated by the Dutch ministry of Foreign Affairs and private sponsoring. Due to the international financial crises and ongoing budget cuts in the Netherlands, it was not possible to get substantial funding from the Dutch government. We are pleased that it did prove possible to find additional support from Dutch companies based in Brazil like KLM, ING, Heineken, Hyva, Shell, RHI (Randstad) and Golden Tulip Hotels. Damen Shipyards sponsored two specific events, the Rio International Cello Encounter and the Cebri-Clingendael seminar which, due to the agenda of the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs, will only be realized in Other sponsors joined for single events like for instance the Queen s Day celebration and the orange bike tour. We hope you enjoyed our Ano da Holanda no Brasil just as much as we did. We also hope we were able to show the Brazilians what the Netherlands has to offer nowadays. Through this booklet you can relive the events you attended and get a good impression of the ones you, unfortunately, had to miss out on. To use our slogan one last time: Experimente! 7 Events The following events took place during the Year of Holland in Brazil. Only some of the events that took place in the Dutch agricultural settlements are mentioned. For a more extensive list of their events, please visit the respective cities websites. March Opening/Flying Artwork The official opening of the Ano da Holanda took place on March 17th, 2011, at the Ambassador s residence. This was two weeks after President Dilma declared 2011 as the Ano da Holanda no Brasil. The diplomatic community, government authorities, press, sponsors and business contacts were invited. About 250 people attended amongst whom some of Dutch descent. Ambassador Kees Rade gave a speech after which the year officially got opened by everyone toasting with a glass of orange champagne. Besides a representative from Itamaraty (the Brazilian Foreign Affairs), Mr. Luiz Carlos Hauly, secretary of finance of the State of Paraná also gave a speech and offered the Ambassador a plaque as a remembrance for the opening of the year. Mr. Hauly used to be the delegate for Paraná in the Brazilian Congress, and in this capacity initiated the law about Ano da Holanda no Brasil. Credit flyingartwork.nl From March 18th through March 20th two aerial dancers of the Dutch acrobatic group Flying Artwork performed two shows a night called Flying Jellyfish at the Pontão do Lago Sul in Brasília. There was supposed to be a show on the opening night at the residence with these same aerial dancers doing acrobatics while hanging from a crane, from company Hyva, with a jellyfish hovering over them but, unfortunately, it got cancelled because of heavy rain. Although it was the rainy season, they got to do their six shows at the Pontão, sometimes with a short weather delay. The Pontão is an area where people go to take a stroll or dine out at fine restaurants and especially at night it attracts a lot of people. Each show had a lot of spectators and the artists got an immense applause. Little children were mesmerized by the artists and asked them for signatures and wanted to be photographed with them. Neso used the event to promote studying in the Netherlands during this event. 5

8 March Expodireto Cotrijal It was the 12th edition of this yearly held agricultural fair in the city of Não-me- Toque in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Não-me- Toque is one of the Dutch agricultural settlements in the south of Brazil. During the fair a statue got unveiled on the occasion of Ano da Holanda. Mr. Wieke Piët, Consul General at the Dutch Consulate in São Paulo, attended this special occasion (first one on the left of the statue). March Contemporary jazz concerts by Michiel Borstlap The internationally renowned Dutch contemporary jazz pianist, Mr. Michiel Borstlap, played on the 21st of March at the opening event of Ano da Holanda in Rio de Janeiro. Previously that day, the Dutch pianist had given a workshop to a group of children of the Favela da Rocinha showing great interest in all their questions and motivating them not to abandon their talent. Despite the fact that it missed the expected attention from the press, it turned out to be an unforgettable event for the young pianists. The 22nd Michiel arrived in Brasília and gave a concert for the public free of charge. He played his own works on the Steinway of the Teatro Nacional and chatted a little with the public during the concert. During the break of the concert for about 350 people, small bottles of water were served, offered by the Dutch Embassy, in honor of World Water Day. Each bottle had a little tag with the World Water Day logo and a small explanation, to make people aware of this fact. Michiel Borstlap enjoyed Brasília so much that he wanted to stay an extra day. He was scheduled to leave for São Paulo the morning of the 23rd of March but everything got rescheduled for the 24th. Michiel got to take an improvised tour of Brasília with some people from the Embassy. He was crazy about the architecture of the city. At night some colleagues took Michiel to Clube do Choro which is a famous music club for traditional choro in Brasília. The famous Brazilian pianist Mr. João Nonato played with friends. In the interval 6

9 a meeting was arranged between the two pianists and the owner of the club and at the end of the night Michiel jammed a little with the drummer and got a standing ovation. Following his successful concert in Brasília, it was time for Michiel Borstlap to show some of the Netherlands best jazz music in São Paulo. In Centro Cultural São Paulo, one of the biggest and most important cultural centers of the city, Michiel Borstlap played with two local musicians for an enthusiastic audience. March Alumni Conference Royal Dutch Agricultural Engineers Association (KLV) 24 The KLV-Wageningen Alumni Conference was held in the city of Piracicaba, State of São Paulo. Also on view were various small private exhibitions on, for instance, Dutch philately and coins, skates and clogs. April Intermodal Trade Fair There are only three large events on the global agenda for logistics, transportation and foreign trade: one in Europe, another in Asia and Intermodal South America in Brazil, which on the eve of its last edition was considered the largest and most important show in the Americas, gathering the main players, serving as a platform for launches, brand reinforcement, sales and networking. This year there were about 450 exhibitors, 12% more than the previous edition, and a 20% increase in international participation, said Mr. Joris Van Wijk, director of UBM Brazil. In face of the new global scenario, more and more companies see the huge range of commercial opportunities that only a business exhibition can offer. Besides being a strategic meeting place for business and relations, decision-making professionals have a veritable shopping center at their disposal, full of incredible offers and opportunities. The following Dutch companies participated at the Dutch Pavilion at Intermodal 2011: Amsterdam Port, Port of Rotterdam, Groningen Sea Ports, NDL/HIDC and Zeeland Ports. 8

Heineken also served longnecks and for this brought along friendly waiting staff dressed in a Heineken outfit, just like at the official opening of the year. On April 30th a reception was held for the Dutch community. Ano da Holanda was mentioned various times in the Ambassador s speech. The banners got a prominent place and the guests could take home flyers and some other information about this special year. Rio de Janeiro Undoubtedly because of Ano da Holanda no Brasil, attendance at the Queen s Day reception in Rio de Janeiro exceeded the average number, with close to 200 guests crowding the Consul General s residence to network and enjoy typical Dutch treats. Other participants were people from the Dutch community, children, Embassy staff with their friends and family and members of cyclist associations. The Embassy with help from NGO Rodas da Paz, has created two new cycling routes in Brasília (a Touristic Route and a Nature Route) and compiled the two in a brochure along with tips and information about cycling in this city. The routes are a contribution to the city and the local government to encourage their work on cycling and perhaps, in the near future, have an extensive cycling infrastructure. Given the knowledge that the Netherlands has in the area of cycling, the Embassy arranged for an bicycle policy officer from the Dutch Cyclist s Union (Nederlandse Fietsersbond), Mr. Bas Hendriksen, to attend two seminars with reference to topics such as: urban mobility, infrastructure improvements, educating people about cycling, cycling and the environment and personal health. He wants to give back to the cultural and artistic community of Pernambuco by painting well-known and inspiring Pernambucan painters. The portrait below is a self-portrait in the series Capturados (prisoners). By recognizing Dutch styles which influenced Pernambucan painters and Brazilian styles which influenced Roberto Ploeg, this project demonstrates the admiration both countries have for one another. Roberto Ploeg had a catalogue published with the paintings from the exhibition. October Workshop Mevis & Van Deursen Mevis & Van Deursen is an award winning graphic design duo from Amsterdam. The conductor, Mr. Conrad van Alphen, and the Brazilian organizer of the tour, Art Invest, are so enthusiastic that they already started planning next year s tour of this orchestra of Brazil. On October 9th the orchestra played at the majestic Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro. Mozart was on the program, with a breathtaking performance of soloist Ms. Maria Meerovitch. Also on the program Tornado, the latest composition by Mr. Patrick van Deurzen, which was received with a standing ovation. 33 October Showing of the movie Shouf Shouf Habibi 13 The Embassy of the Republic of Poland inaugurated the Club of European Cinema, in which they invite other European embassies to present national movies. The Dutch Embassy was invited to participate and presented the movie Shouf Shouf Habibi (2004). Before the presentation of the movie, the First Secretary of the Dutch Embassy, Mrs. Sara Cohen, was asked to speak briefly about the importance and influence of Dutch film around the world. Shouf Shouf Habibi was the first multi culti comedy and a trendsetter in the Dutch film world. The film sketches a funny, confronting, but also touching image of cultural differences and growing up in a multicultural environment in big cities in the Netherlands. Ano da Holanda no Brasil 2011 celebrates both the similarities and the differences between Brazil and the Netherlands. Like the Netherlands, Brazil is a country composed of many cultures, therefore, sharing experiences and culture with our Brazilian counterparts aims to further strengthen the already strong relations between our two countries. October th Short Film Festival in Belo Horizonte, MG This festival is well known in the international circuit of film festivals and offers a great possibility to network with a large number of professionals in film and design worldwide. This immediately appealed to Mr. Udo Prinsen from the Netherlands, who was invited to join the competition screenings with his short animated film Audition, inspired by drawings from Auschwitz prisoners. 31

34 October Dutch Film Week As part of the Year of Holland celebrations, Caixa Cultural in collaboration with Femina Institute for Culture and Citizenship and the Dutch Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro presented the Dutch Film Showcase. It was the first time that a showcase in Brazil was dedicated to the broad cinema produced in the Netherlands. Among the 56 films were short and feature films, animations, documentaries and awarded works. All films represented Holland with its multicultural complexity, peculiarities and controversy, its technological and cultural prominence, and the peaceful coexistence with rooted traditions. Two Dutch filmmakers, Ms. Esther Rots and Ms. Eef de Graaf, took part in an interesting debate about the process and funding of movie making in the Netherlands. October III Semana dos Realizadores Inspired by the Quinzaine des Réalizateurs, a fortnight created in Paris in 1968 as an alternative to the Cannes Film Festival, the Semana dos Realizadores do Rio de Janeiro had its third edition. This was the first time curators from international festivals were invited as members of the jury. Mr. Raymond Walraves, director and curator of the Amsterdam World Cinema, represented the Netherlands. Both the set-up of the festival as well as the quality of the films enrolled were praised. The cooperation and the pleasant working atmosphere already bore fruit. Ms. Lis Kogan, coordinator, producer and curator of the event, was invited by Mr. Walraves to take part in next year s Amsterdam World Cinema Brazilian edition. 32

It is a very intimate show because the public is seated on three sides of the dancers. 33

37 November Design Panel Museu da Casa Brasileira, São Paulo 03 In view of the celebrations surrounding the 25th anniversary of the MCB Design Award, the Museu Da Casa Brasileira organized several workshops and presentations on international design. On the evening of November 3rd, the Dutch organization Central de Cultura presented a panel on Dutch Graphic Design at the museum. During the panel Dutch Graphic Design Recent Works, three internationally renowned Dutch graphic designers presented their work: Ms. Nikki Gonnissen of Thonik, Ms. Karen van de Kraats en Mr. Richard van der Laken designer at De Design Politie. The three designers gave a demonstration of their experimental, innovative, inspiring and sometimes funny graphic designs: Nikki Gonnissen, for instance, presented the latest and, in the eyes of the Brazilian audience quite uncommon, political campaign for the Dutch Socialist Party which she designed (see photo). Karen van de Kraats work clearly distinguished itself through its conceptual graphics, typography and printing. Last but not least, Richard van der Laken showed some entertaining and provocative examples of his visual column Gorilla at the famous Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant. The curious audience loved the presentations and fired numerous questions afterwards. November Seminar Corporate Social Responsibility and Human Rights: Challenges and Opportunities 07 Organized by Ethos Institute, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and ICCO, this seminar aimed to promote the debate about the responsibilities and opportunities of business with human rights. It was held in Recife, State of Pernambuco, in the Northeast of Brazil. This region has the highest rate of economic growth in the country. Growth comes with challenges for the protection of human rights which require commitment and action not only of governments but also of civil society and enterprises. 35

38 November Seminar Dutch Brazil Mr. Ricardo Brennand (1927), founder of the Instituto Ricardo Brennand (2002) accumulated a large collection of international artworks during his life. He put them on display in a castle he built and this Instituto Ricardo Brennand also has a large library focused on Brazil and the Netherlands with approximately works of literature. The goal of this seminar was to share with a large audience the Brazilian and Dutch culture through sharing histories, shred cultural heritages and the education of art. A book will be published before July 2012 about the outcomes and findings of the seminar. November Concerts State of Monc Just back from a short tour in China, the Dutch band State of Monc gave a total of 4 concerts in São Paulo, State of São Paulo, and Pelotas, Rio Grande and Porto Alegre in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. State of Monc is part of the Dutch Nu-jazz movement and has a unique, innovative and very danceable sound. Their search for the perfect balance between electronic beats and sounds, brass instrumentation and acoustic bass and drums opens up new roads and appeals to fans of jazz, dance and experimental music all over the world. November Concerts State of Monc Mr. Theo Visser teaches at the Arts Center De Kom in Nieuwegein, the Netherlands, and has been playing the organs of the Hooglandse Kerk (church) in Leiden, also the Netherlands, since He was the fourth and last organist invited by the Instituto de Cultura e Arte Organística to play during the Ano da Holanda in Brazil. He played during the, by now, famous lunch time concerts at CCBB (Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil), where a Rodgers Allegiant 698 organ is available. In the evening, he played at the baroque church of the Mosteiro de São Bento, where the tubes of the old organ, dated 1773, are connected to the new instrument filling the church with an astounding sound. Ms. Domitila Ballesteros, Director of the Institute de Cultura e Arte Organística, introduced the Dutch player and each piece of the program as well as explained how the organ works. Thanks to the screen, everybody was able to both watch and listen to the concert. 36

39 November Seminar on Business Opportunities Netherlands-Brazil The Marriott hotel in Copacabana was the scene for Dutch and Brazilian entrepreneurs interested in establishing partnerships on various levels. The current state of bilateral trade and investments was analyzed and a lot of attention was addressed to the possibilities for growth and ways to accelerate this growth. Authorities, technicians and representatives from both Governments were also present. November Rio Design Indústria 29 FIRJAN, the Rio de Janeiro Industry Federation, created the Rio Design Indústria event as a meeting point for the industrial and creative sectors. It takes place twice a year and promotes the positive influence that the creative sector has on the industry on several levels. This edition of RDI had an orange hue to it with the presence of four prominent Dutch participants. Ms. Claudia Lieshout, Global Leader Culture Scan/Global Leader Trends, Strategic Futures Design of Philips Amsterdam talked about her fascinating work and how today s trend can become a much desired product in a whim of time. Successful partnerships between designers and the industry were discussed by Ms. Ineke Hans and three other local designers. From the industry side, Mr. Jan Tichelaar told the moving story of Tichelaar Makkum, saved from bankruptcy thanks to a dedicated team of designers. Other partners involved, such as design institutes and governmental entities also had their saying. Mr. Victor Le Noble, active in organizing and/or mediating the participation of designers in exhibitions such as the world famous Milan Design Week, focused on examples that underlined the future of consumer needs and values and the need to integrate design into marketing strategy. It was a very successful event during which experiences were freely exchanged. 37

41 November Launch Atlas of the Coast of Brazil During their investigation on the rich period of Dutch Brazil in the 17th century, Professors Cristina Ferrão and José Paulo Monteiro Soares came across a volume filed under code 4.VEL.Y in the National Archive of The Hague. Its title was Brief Description of the Brazilian Coast and some Other Places. Besides the exquisite iconographic illustrations, almost nothing was known about the atlas, but its anonymous authorship and the images which resembled the Coast of Brazil. Three images of the atlas were published in the edition Route of an Unknown Brazil edited by Kapa Editorial, in After this the professors were, finally, able to persuade their Dutch colleague, Professor B.N. Teensma from the University of Leiden, that the effort of translating the book would pay off, even if he considered the work too technical. The transcription work began, from Old Dutch in Gothic manuscript. There were 65 folios (130 pages), 12 blank pages, 73 with texts and 45 manuscript and watercolor maps. After research on every aspect relevant to historical investigation, comprehensive assessment and paleographic comparisons, experts came to the conclusion that the maps had been made by the joint efforts of hydrographer Mr. Jan Lichthart and geographer Mr. Georg Marcgrave. The launch of the book in Rio de Janeiro repeated the successful launch it had in the Netherlands with the presence of Professor Teensma and Ms. Mara de Groot from the National Archive. December Official ending The Year of Holland in Brazil came to an official ending during 3 nights in respectively the cities of Brasília, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The diplomatic community, Brazilian authorities, sponsors, press and the business contacts from the Embassy and both Consulates General, whom all helped make this year into a success could enjoy a presentation and a tasting of Heineken beer, Friesland Campina cheese and Van Kleef jenever (Dutch gin). 39
