1 I. m Infrmatin: Bakersfield Cllege m Review Annual Update m Name: Gelgy (includes earth science and gegraphy curriculum) m Type: X Instructinal Nn Instructinal m Missin Statement: The primary missin f the gelgy prgram is t serve students seeking CSU/UC transfer int the undergraduate BS gelgy degree, satisfy cre science requirements tward the AA cmmunity cllege degree, and give students the pprtunity t gain invaluable gelgical knwledge fr gelgy emplyment. m Descriptin: Describe hw the prgram supprts the Bakersfield Cllege Missin. The gelgy prgram supprts the verall BC missin by serving ur cmmunity with varius gelgy curses that supprt emplyment prspects within the Bakersfield cmmunity and surrunding areas. In fact, 43% f gelgy graduates are emplyed in the petrleum industry, which includes Bakersfield and surrunding cmmunities. It is the missin f the gelgy prgram at BC t prvide quality instructin that prepares each student with the necessary academic tls t seek emplyment in the field f gelgy. II. m Assessment (fcus n mst recent year): A. Hw did yur utcmes assessment results infrm yur prgram planning? Frmal and infrmal assessment f student learning utcmes (SLO s) during the semesters demnstrated that students enrlled in gelgy, gegraphy, and earth science curses are cntinuing t imprve and master bth cntent vcabulary as well as prcesses within each instructed discipline (gelgy, earth science, gegraphy), indicating ur prgram plan cntinues t mve in a psitive directin. Infrmal assessment strategies include the use f I>clickers, class discussins, assigned study grups, and varius checking fr understanding techniques. Frmal assessments include clsed bk/nte exams, quizzes, and the semester pre and pst tests that cver questins related t curse SLO s. B. Hw did yur utcmes assessment results infrm yur resurce requests? Outcme assessment results indicated the cntinued need and mdificatin f hands n activities bth in lecture and lab cntent. Currently, the gelgy staff is revising the gelgy lab manual t reflect increased hands n activities and making mdificatins t hands n lab activities t the current earth science lab manual. The purpse f these activities is t increase student retentin rates and mastery f cntent material. Gelgy and earth science Labs have been rewrked and rewritten t incrprate varius resurces allwing students t perfrm the hands n activities. C. Instructinal ms nly: Hw d curse level student learning utcmes align with prgram learning utcmes? Results f SLO pre and pst tests fr intrductin curses in gelgy, earth science and gegraphy indicate the majrity f students master curse cntent and curse SLO s. Establishment f the AS T degree in gelgy significantly strengthens the gelgy prgram in terms f attracting students wh will emerge with a slid degree guaranteeing transferability at junir level status t any CSU/UC institutin. Additinally, it is anticipated that students are mre likely t cmplete their gelgy educatin plan and graduate with the AS T gelgy degree frm Bakersfield Cllege, thus increasing the amunt f awards granted fr gelgy. The BC gelgy prgram cntinues t refine and streamline ur curriculum thrugh alignment meetings. Curriculum alignment meetings are held after each semester fr the purpse f preparing cntent alignment fr bth lecture and lab tpics. All gelgy/earth science instructrs (full time and adjunct) align their syllabi with cntent tpics t ensure that students receive cnsistent instructin regardless f wh (instructr) is instructing the class. Significant changes within the BC gelgy prgram have cntributed t a strnger relatinship with Cal State University Bakersfield (CSUB) gelgy prgram. Cntinued cllabratin between bth BC and CSUB instructrs has resulted in increased gelgy student transfers, BC students cncurrently cmpleting gelgy related classes n bth campuses, CSUB gelgy field trips with invited BC students, and BC students being given the pprtunity t participate in extracurricular gelgy related activities. F. Describe any significant changes in yur prgram s weaknesses since last year. There has been n significant change regarding prgram weaknesses. G. If applicable, describe any unplanned events that affected yur prgram. N/A III. Resurce Analysis: A. Human Resurces 1. If yu are requesting any additinal psitins, explain briefly hw the additinal psitins will cntribute t increased student success. (Faculty Request frm; Classified Request frm) Currently, the gelgy department emplys ne full time gelgy instructr. The gelgy prgram is requesting the replacement fr a full time gelgy instructr fr the year. The additinal gelgy instructr psitin will cntribute t student success by allwing additinal gelgy classes t be taught ther than the standard B10 and B10L series especially in the wake f a 46% increase in declared gelgy majrs (46 declared gelgy majrs in Fall 2012 t 86 in Fall 2013). As the Delan campus student ppulatin increases, the need t instruct bth a gelgy and earth science curse simultaneusly may exist. Currently, the prgram is heavily dependent n adjunct faculty and their instructinal lad is spread thin. Additinally, field studies (field trips) are imprtant gelgic activities that enhance the learning f gelgical cncepts, prmte enthusiasm and increases STEM interest. It is essential t have at least tw full time gelgy instructrs that wrk tgether rchestrating scheduling and lcatins f field studies t accmmdate the increasing number f current Bakersfield Cllege gelgy students. With the additinal full time gelgy instructr, the rati f instructr t gelgy student wuld be 1:43 as ppsed t the current 1:86 which wuld allw increased quality attentin t individual gelgy majrs.
3 2. Prfessinal Develpment (Prfessinal Develpment frm) a. Describe briefly the effectiveness f the prfessinal develpment yur prgram has been engaged with (either prviding r attending) during the last cycle, fcusing n hw it cntributed t student success. During the 2013 year, STEM funds were prvided t 13 STEM instructrs which allwed attendance t the annual GTS cnference. Teaching innvatins frm seasned instructrs, department cllegiality, and mentring new teachers certainly cntributed t student success with Instructrs cmmitting t implementing the varius tpics cvered at the annual GTS cnference. It wuld be f great value if the cllege, as a whle, wuld devte mre resurces tward prfessinal develpment utside the cllege, such as prviding funding fr memberships in prfessinal rganizatins and financial supprt tward attending prfessinal cnferences. b. Prvide ratinale fr future prfessinal develpment pprtunities and cntributins that yur prgram can make. With the grwing number f gelgy majrs at Bakersfield Cllege cupled with the increasing demand fr bth petrleum and envirnmental gelgists in the wrkplace, varius prfessinal develpment pprtunities wuld allw instructrs t imprve their teaching skills as well as stay current with industry practices. The gelgy prgram has nt received new repurpsed technlgy in this cycle. Hwever, plans have been frwarded t cmplete the prpsed shwcase gelgy/earth science lab in MS6. a. If yes, hw has this technlgy cntributed t student success? b. If n, hw will yur new r repurpsed technlgy request cntribute t student success? The BC gelgy prgram wuld like t see cmpletin f ur shwcase lab. The lab shwcase wuld incrprate an nline weather statin, the use f virtual reality activities, the peratin f bright link cmputer capabilities, stream channel table (t explain sedimentary prcesses), class set f I>clickers (lecture instructin), and a class set f laptp cmputers (fr lab instructin). NOTE: A class set f I>clickers fr bth gelgy/earth science classes have been purchased and are currently being used in classes. Use f this technlgy wuld be incrprated within all aspects f ur cntent material in bth lecture and lab (gelgy, earth science, gegraphy) and evaluated by measuring student retentin rates f SLO s thrugh infrmal and frmal assessment strategies, level f student passin fr the subject matter, and degree f scientific interest and awareness within the K 12 student cmmunity.

Currently, the gelgy prgram envisins the cmpletin f the MS6 shwcase lab. D. Budget (Changes t the budget allcatin can be requested using the Budget Change Request Frm). Trend Data Analysis: Highlight any significant changes in the fllwing metrics and discuss what such changes mean t yur prgram. A. Changes in student demgraphics (gender, age and ethnicity). There are n significant changes fr the cycle. B. Changes in enrllment (headcunt, sectins, curse enrllment and prductivity). Data indicate a 1.6% drp in gelgy enrllment frm 491 students ( ) t 483 students ( ); hwever, the drp in enrllment is less than the verall percentage drp fr BC. Gelgy, earth science and gegraphy lecture/lab curses cntinue t reach maximum enrllment each semester with waiting lists filled t capacity. At present, BC ffers a ttal f 2 gelgy B10 lecture sectins with 3 sectins f gelgy B10L lab, 3 sectins f earth science B10 lectures with 4 sectins f earth science B10L and 3 sectins f gegraphy B1 with 3 sectins f gegraphy B1L as well as 2 sectins f gegraphy B2. The gelgy prgram is supprted by 2 full time (1 gelgy instructr, 1 gegrpahy instructr) and 8 adjunct prfessrs. C. Success and retentin fr face t face, as well as nline/distance curses. The gelgy prgram cntinues t hld steady regarding student success and retentin. Since the schl year, student retentin has increased frm 84.7% imprving t 88.5% in and cntinues t remain clse t 88% in year resulting in a 4% increase ver the last several semesters. D. Currently, gelgy faculty is cmpiling a list f rck samples that represent varius gelgic prvinces f Califrnia. Rck sample types and acquiring the samples (transprtatin t get the samples) will be funded by the STEM grant.

The primary missin f the gelgy prgram is t serve students seeking CSU/UC transfer int an undergraduate BS gelgy degree prgram, satisfy cre science requirements tward the AA cmmunity cllege degree, and give students the pprtunity t gain invaluable gelgical knwledge fr gelgy emplyment. The AS T degree in gelgy is designed t prvide students a clear pathway t the CSU gelgy majr and cmpletin f the gelgy baccalaureate degree, t grant guaranteed admissin t a CSU fr a similar majr, with junir standing, and t prvide the ability t cmplete their remaining requirements within 60 semester r 90 quarter units. Currently, all students majring in gelgy are made aware f the AS T gelgy degree and cmpleting varius gelgy and ther required curses in line with the AS T gelgy degree. Therefre, it is anticipated that there will be future gelgy degrees earned in subsequent academic years. Emplyment data fr gelgists within the Bakersfield cmmunity and utlying areas cntinue t indicate there are mre available jbs than there are gelgists t fill them. Currently, 43% f gelgy graduates are emplyed in the petrleum industry which includes Bakersfield and surrunding cmmunities. It is the bjective f Bakersfield Cllege t prvide students with the Assciate f Science in Gelgy fr Transfer Degree (AS T), which nw replaces the previus Assciate f Science (AS) degree utlined in the current catalg f prgrams. The future utlk fr gelgy emplyment is excellent, and the gal f BC is t prvide the necessary gelgy cursewrk fr transfer students t make a smth transitin int the CSU system and pursue higher level gelgy degrees. Faculty members f the BC gelgy prgram cntinue t strengthen cmmunicatin and activities with faculty at the CSUB gelgy prgram. Students have already benefited frm strng ties between BC and CSUB gelgy prgrams. With acquisitin f ur STEM grant, the gelgy prgram at BC is mving frward regarding technlgical imprvements. Our shwcase lab prpsal is cmplete and accepted with an anticipated cmpletin date f December Additinally, the cnstructin f the gelgy rck garden is currently underway and, when cmpleted, will serve bth faculty and students regarding the gelgy f Califrnia. A ttal f 14 gelgy related curses, including gegraphy curses, are currently scheduled fr curriculum review within the next five years, updating each curse under the 6 year review cycle. VIII.
