Deltager 1 (D1a: Kvinde, D1b: Mand) A: Why are you in Copenhagen in the first place? D1a: Just for weekend A: Just for weekend? D1a: Yes, because today it is my birthday A: Ohh, happy birthday D1a: Well, so we wanted to do something special, and because of my partners business, we have been a lot of places, even in Cambodia, Shanghai, Hong Kong, but we never been to Copenhagen, so that is why we chose it. A: Well, what is your impression of this hotel? D1a: It is okay, it is good. We think it is good. A: Do you think it is different in any way from other four star hotels you been to? D1a: Yes I mean The check in is a bit chaotic. But it is nice. But year, a but chaotic. A: Okay, so you haven t got the best impression? D1a: Oooh, it is good, but so said compared to other four star hotels, so it is okay, but there are some things like for example in the evening the people who make the bed I think they could make it a bit cleaner. A: It is not so clean? D1a: Nooo, I mean, usually four star hotels they come every day and make everything A: But here they do not come every day? D1a: I think they do, but it does not look particularly A: Aha, okay But the hotel has won several prices for being the most something in the world. Do you know what prices that is? D1a. This is the best of hotel? A: Yes Do you know what they won the prices for? D1b: Have they won prices? A: Yes D1a: And we have to guess what the prices are for? A: Yes D1b: Then the location maybe.. It is not good for tourists, but it is good for business. A: The location? Yeah, it is good for business. D1a: What is the price? Deltager 1 (D1a: Kvinde, D1b: Mand) 2

A: Yeah, they actually won the price for being the greenest hotel in the world. D1b: Oh, ecology, ecologically sound. A: Yes. D1a: But what does it mean that it is green? A: It is because it is not bad for the environment.. D1a: But what have they done? A: They have D1a: I have read that, I remember A: It is warmed up with a water system. D1b: So it is heated by ground A: there are some things on the building that takes the sun and then it is heated. They do not use any electricity. They try to do a lot of things.. D1a: But there was too much heat D1b: But the air-condition was reasonable. In all hotels there are problems with heat. We stay a lot or I stay at hotels all the time, and the biggest problem is heat. They are always too hot. Another big problem that we use to have as well is that we get a duvet, but a duvet is too hot now to sleep with. In other words you get the same covering in July as in February A: You prefer it hotter in February? D1a: Yes, and this hotel did not have any blanket. A: A blanket? D1a: Yes, and they don t have, I asked them. D1b: What I usually do is that I say forget about the duvet, give me a sheet and a blanket, because then you can decide how hot or how cold you want it to be, and you couldn t find the blanket, and I must say it is not unusual. D1a: You asked to compare with other hotels, so that s what we do. A: Yes, yes but what do you think about is when I tell you what it is the greenest hotel in the world? They are doing so much to improve the environment and D1b: Well, the location is very nice, the hotel is good, but my impression generally is that it is old staff, just an impression I have no specific incident. But that is not unusual in Denmark, because I think it is so difficult to employ people, the taxes are so high compared to the same hotel in.. I don t know, in Portugal or in Asia They employ many more people who are working. Here they have to work much harder and do different things A: Yeah, to get the money But how do you feel about staying in a hotel that is so special, it is the best in the world in relation to environment. Deltager 1 (D1a: Kvinde, D1b: Mand) 3

D1a: [trækker på skuldrene] D1b: I am afraid D1a: Nooo, it is good.. D1b: I know many people who have the idea of global warming First of all, I don t believe it. It s just as simple as that D1a: No, I believe it, but at the same time it is not that overrated, not because of that I can t buy the same.. It s not the biggest priority to choose a hotel. It s like a bonus. It is good, if it is ambitious, but at the same time I don t choose a hotel because of it There are many other things that make my our stay more comfortable. A: I understand. D1b: So unfortunately they do not really commercial it, it does not really appeal to us, but it is nice.. D1a: It is nice, I think it is a good point. D1b: But we do not think Oh, we must go there because it is ecologically sound D1a. Yeah, it is like a bonus. Deltager 1 (D1a: Kvinde, D1b: Mand) 4

Deltager 2 (D2a: Kvinde, D2b: Mand) A: What are you doing here in Copenhagen? D2b: A little vacation and a little work A: So you just arrived to Copenhagen? D2a: No, we arrived yesterday morning, but because of the rain, the other hotel we lived in the elevator stopped working, no hot water and so we changed to this A: Ooooh, so you got this one for free or? D2a: No, we got our money back from the other hotel so we just paid here instead. A: Oh, that was awful so you got to see a lot of things in Copenhagen yesterday? D2a: Yeah, the day was fine, but the evening was.. wow.. A: Yeah, but then how did you chose this hotel? D2a: We saw it from the other one. A: Ah okay, so you D2a: We saw it, and that was the only one we had the name of so we called.. So they gave us a great deal and now we are here. The rooms are perfect. So we are happy. A: So you just went to the room and then out to shop? D2a: Yes [griner] A: Then I suppose you don t know anything about this hotel? D2a,b: No A: It has actually won a price for being the most something in the world. Do you have an idea about what that could be? [stilhed, D2b griner] A: Just a guess D2b: Nice rooms? A: Okay.. why do you think the rooms are nice? D2b: I think it looks good, perfect, even the sheet upon [griner] D2a: it is also a very expensive price if you compare it to other places we have been It has a lot of features I think. You can look around and A: Yeah, the design of it..? It is different from other four star hotels you stayed at? D2a: Yes, I think so it is not so often that we stay at hotels, so we don t have a lot to compare with. But it is really nice. Deltager 2 (D2a: Kvinde, D2b: Mand) 5

A: Well, the hotel has actually won a price for being the greenest hotel in the world. It does not do any harm to the environment at all and sustainability is built into everything here D2a,b: Oh wow A: So what do you think about it when I tell you that? D2a. That is really nice. A: Why? [De siger noget indbyrdes og griner] D2b: Good for the environment? [griner] A: Do you think that is nice? D2a: Yeah, everything that helps is good A: Mmmm What can I ask you..? You didn t notice that it is sustainable when you came here? Have you noticed something that can show you that it is sustainable? D2b: I don t know A: Yeah, they hide it very well.. D2a: Yeah, because I haven t seen it A: It is a bit strange actually.. But well I have a last thing. All this are factors that you may consider according to a hotel. I read about it, and I found out that people think these are important, so I just want to ask you what do you think is important? [ pris tages op som det første] A: Is the price the thing you always think of first? D2a: Yes. D2b: When the next important thing are the facilities. A: Yes, which facilities do you look for? D2b: If it has a spa or something like that [griner] D2a: [tager personale brikken op] When you come to a new place, you want to feel a little at home, and know that people are nice and take good care of you. Then you will come back [jeg forklarer hvad de tilbageværende brikker betyder] D2a: [tager økologi brikken] I think we think more about this when we are at home, because how can I put it When you go from home and on vacation you don t want to clean or you don t want to.. you want to relax. A: So you think about the organic products when you are at home, but not when you are on vacation? Deltager 2 (D2a: Kvinde, D2b: Mand) 6

D2a: Yes really. A: It is the same you think of the other ones like climate?... You don t consider it so much? D2a: Yeah, not so much. It is more when you are at home you recycle and stuff like that A: But on vacation you just want to D2a: Yeah [griner], put it all behind. Deltager 2 (D2a: Kvinde, D2b: Mand) 7

Deltager 3 (D3a = Kvinde 1, D3b=Kvinde 2, D3c=Kvinde 3) A: Well, I am studying at Copenhagen Business School and this is a very special hotel, so that is why I am writing my master theses about it, and I just want to ask in the first place what are you doing in Copenhagen? D3a: Actually we went to transit, and we want to go to Iceland today, but we are not sure if we can get the ticket. We are the crew and we have a discount ticket, that is why we are not sure if we can get available seats or not, because if there is available seats we can get, because this is discount ticket.. A: Okay, so you are not going to visit Copenhagen? D3a: Oh, we are not sure, because if we cannot get the ticket to the flight, we are going to enjoy here. If we can get the ticket, we are going to Iceland. A: Okay, what do you think about this hotel? D3a: It is really really beautiful. D3b: It s amazing D3a. The design is very cool. D3b: I went to the crew lounge in the hotel, it s fantastic the computer, all computer are Mac [griner], free drinks there, free internet, free food, even alcohol is free for the crew A: Ah okay, because you are stewardesses? Ah, that is how it is. [en mere kommer til, de griner og fortæller på eget sprog, at vi er i gang med et interview] A: But you didn t choose the hotel by yourself then? D3a: No no, our company chose here. A: The hotel has actually won a lot of prices for being the best in the world. Do you know what that is? D3b: Mmm I don t know any price D3a: But it is very expensive A: Yes, but no no, not the price. They won something, because they are the best you know D3b: Design? Clean? D3c: Service? D3a: Safety? A: Do you think it is safe? D3a: Yes, I think so. Because we already been to a lot of hotels in the world. You know, we are flying to everywhere in the world. And in some hotels we cannot feel safety or we feel dusty or Deltager 3 (D3a = Kvinde 1, D3b=Kvinde 2, D3c=Kvinde 3) 8

anything, because we don t feel any dusty or any unsafety here. It is so clean and so beautiful this hotel. D3b: We have to touch the clock when we go to upstairs in the elevator. We have to use the key.. A: Yeah, so not everybody can use the elevator D3b: So it s safety. A: Now I can tell you that the hotel is the greenest hotel in the world. They care a lot about the environment and have built it in to everything, so that they don t harm the environment. So that is why they won a lot of prices for being the best. What do you think about it when I tell you that? [stilhed] A: Do you understand? They do not use any energy here and they use the water again and again and again, so it is good D3a: Good for the earth. A: Yes, good for the earth. What do you think about living in a hotel that is good for the earth? D3b: It is very important A: Why? D3b: Because actually we are from Doha, Qatar in the middle-east A: Ah, I ve never been there D2b: You don t need to go. It s very dusty. D3b: Any kind of luxury hotel it is west. In Qatar they don t care at all about environment. For example when we enter the door, then one guy giving the towel, then we just use the towel and then throw away. It is just in the west Even the toilet paper, or not the toilet paper, but the toilet towel we just use one time and throw away A: Do you like that? D3b: No, it is not good for the environment. So I agree in this kind of A: It is better? D3b: Better, of course D3a: Better for the earth A: Here you can use it and throw it away, but they are cleaning it in a good place, where they don t use chemicals. That was all I had.. D3a: Was it okay, we are not so good answers. A: It was very good. Deltager 3 (D3a = Kvinde 1, D3b=Kvinde 2, D3c=Kvinde 3) 9

Deltager 4 (D4a = Kvinde, D4b = Mand) A: Why did you come to Copenhagen in the first place? D4a: On a family vacation D4b: Just traveling A: Where are you from? D4a: Iceland A: Okay. And why did you go to this hotel? D4b: We found it on the internet on hotels.com and it was a cheap hmm.. D4a: good placement D4b: and it was cheap in relation to all the benefits in a four star hotel - A good place to stay because we are five, and it is not easy to get a room for five people. But it is no problem here And we enjoy the stay very much A: Oh, you enjoy it So what do you think about the hotel in relation to other four star hotels? D4b: Yeah, I think it s nice. It s modern A: The design of it? D4b: Yeah, and the hotel is controlled by the key you got, to the elevator and stuff like that. The mini-bar and stuff like that is automatic, and you can also through the TV see all arrangements and stuff like that so A: So you enjoy being here? D4b: Yes, yes A: Well, the hotel has won several prices as the most something in the world. Do you know something about it? D4b: Okay. No, we don t know anything about it. We just saw it on the internet and saw the location and saw that it was a fair and good price and the stars, so we thought that it was just okay. A: Can you imagine what they won the prices for? D4b: Hmm A: If you should guess? D4b: Hmm no not [stilhed] A: Maybe if I help you and tell you that it has to do with the environment D4b: Yeah okay.. A: Do you know or have you heard something? D4b: No, we don t know anything Deltager 4 (D4a = Kvinde, D4b = Mand) 10

A: Did you notice any different things here? [stilhed, parret siger noget til hinanden på eget sprog] D4b: Well, no I was in Amsterdam before I came here on another four star hotel there, that was pretty modern, but more simple than this one. So I just wanted it s modern, it s I think it s also simple to be here, no pressure or anything, just simplicity A: Yeah, calm But it is actually the greenest. It has won prices as the greenest hotel in the world. D4b: Okay [overraskelse i stemmen] A: It does not harm the environment at all, or the environmental thoughts are built into everything here. The sun warms it up and there is a water system here, so they don t use any energy outside the building. D4a: Okay [overraskelse i stemmen] D4b: That s great. That makes the stay here even further, because we think of the environment when we are traveling, and we try to do it at home also, so it is just one more plus for this hotel, I think in my mind A: Yeah, so what do you think when I tell you this? D4b: It is fascination, because that is the future, we have to think about it. It is defiantly a plus A: Well, I have a few pictures I would like to show you, which only takes a few minutes D4a: It s okay.. A: Well, I read a lot about hotels stays, and found out that people care about these factors when they choose a hotel, so I would just like you to point some of them out. I think you already mentioned price as one of the most important, but maybe if you could add something location, I have also location.. but how does the things add value to your stay, if we put the most important things here.. D4b: Well, we enjoy to have free internet access. We are using it a lot, check out places to go and according to other places in Copenhagen, so it is nice to have free access to the internet. A: Yeah, that s the facilities How would you for example put the use of organic products in the kitchen and in your bathrooms It makes it easier for me to understand what you think [brikkerne lægges og flyttes lidt rundt, og der tales internt på islandsk] D4b: They like [peger på de tre børn] to watch the Cartoon Network, the TV station, so A: So it is nice if there is something to do for the children? D4b: Yeah, whether it is the TV or some other elements. Because we are traveling with three kids, so it s.. We were at the Tivoli last night A: But they closed it, didn t they? Deltager 4 (D4a = Kvinde, D4b = Mand) 11

D4a: Then we were at this place [griner] D4b: It was thunder and lots of lots of rain. We just arrived when they were closing D4a. So we just went to McDonalds [griner] D4b: And then we went by train to here, and we were so wet A: So it was good that you could take the train, because they stopped as well. D4a: Yeah, the other ones we saw, there was so much water, so they couldn t run the train. So we were lucky to get home [kort snak om regn og vejr fortsætter] A: Well, we have just the last ones Organic products where would you place that? Do you care about eating organic? D4b: Yeah, yeah, we do so at least for us, I think that is important. A: Yeah, and then we have the fair trade, do you know the fair trade? D4b: Yes yes A: For example no children are working on the furniture, and no children are working on the farms where the coffee is produced and... the hotel thinks a lot about it as well [taler indbyrdes] D4b: I think at least for parents it is important to have it like that [billederne placers, afslutningsvist] A: Okay, then we just put it like that. Deltager 4 (D4a = Kvinde, D4b = Mand) 12

Deltager 5 (D5a: Kvinde, D5b Mand) A: I am studying at Copenhagen business school, and I am writing about this hotel, because it is a very special hotel, so I would just like to ask you in the first place, why are you here in Copenhagen? D5a: We are just visiting and watching the sightseeing. D5b: Just vacation A: Why did you choose Copenhagen? D5b: Randomly D5a: Well, we always wanted to visit, but we are from Crete. I don t know if you know Crete, but there is a direct flight for here, so we choose it because it was convenient. A: Okay. This hotel is a little different from other hotels. Have you noticed any differences from other four star hotels that you know? D5a: It is big. It is new It has great design. A: You like the design? Have you noticed anything else here? D5a: No, we were here for just an hour, so we haven t seen the hotel very well. A: Why did you choose this hotel then? D5a: Well, we saw the views about the hotel on the internet On Tripadvisor. It had good recommendations. That s all.. A: So you just chose it from the recommendations? D5a: Yes. A: Okay, well, the hotel has actually won a price for being the most something in the world. Do you have an idea about what that could be? They won several prices actually.. D5a: For those things [peger på store søjler]. I ve never seen this before. But I don t know why A: You haven t an idea? D5a,b: No A: It could be the design? D5a: Yes A: Well, I can tell you that the hotel has won a price for being the greenest hotel in the world - Because the environmental thing is built into everything here, and it is not using any electricity or anything. What do you think when I tell you that? D5a: Oh, oh it is very important. Every building should be like [siger noget på græsk til sin mand] I don t know how to say it in English to build his own electricity to spend. A: Yeah, but it is actually the first building in this size in the world that is built like that. Deltager 5 (D5a: Kvinde, D5b Mand) 13

D5a: Great, great. And how is it doing? Through the wind? A: Yeah, through the sun. All over the place there are things that catch the sun and there is some water all around to heat the building and cool it down And the electricity I think is from the sun I don t understand it all, because I am not en engineer, but it is quite unique what they done Can you say something about what you think about being in a hotel that is so green? D5a: Oh, that s perfect. Of course I didn t know it, I haven t read about this in the internet.. I also look at Tripadvisor, I haven t looked anywhere else, but I didn t know it A: Because nobody mentions it at Tripadvisor. I read everything there as well Well, I have some pictures, it is very fast. It s the things we have been talking about here, put into pictures. And I would like you to point some things out that add value to your stay at this hotel. We don t need to talk about everything, but just some of them. What did you like by the ratings on Tripadvisor? D5a: That it was clean first of all, and helping staff. That is very important A: So if we put the most important things here [peger på bordet], where would you put the others? D5b: Central location is second. D5a: And entertainment I don t care about. A: What about the price? D5a,b: Of course the price. It is the first. To have the price, and friendly and clean. That is the combination. A: Where would you put things like the environment in relation to these? You can put it anywhere D5a: In the middle A: The feeling of getting away from home and enjoying time, where would you put that? D5a: Second. A: It is important? D5a: Mmm A: Do you know the fair trade? D5a: Yes, I understand what you mean by saying fair trade. I have never considered it as a problem, because I don t know I haven t been in a place where the fair trade where they don t treat A: Because you don t know how people live in Africa, so you don t think about it? D5a: Yes. A: And the facilities, internet and so it is the last thing D5a: Second, it is important. Deltager 5 (D5a: Kvinde, D5b Mand) 14

Deltager 6 A: Why are you in Copenhagen in the first place? D6: Actually we come here as tourists. A: As tourists.. So why did you chose Copenhagen? D6: We came in a tourist group. So they booked the hotel. We came in a group of 40 people. A: So you didn t book the hotel? D6: No we didn t directly do it, but of course the travel agency will ask us and then we will say okay, book this. A: Ah okay, so you are in a group? In a tourist group? D6: Yes. A: Okay, and where are you from? D6: India A: Okay Well, when you see the hotel, what do you think about it? D6: Class. It s good, very nice. Because we I have been traveling in so many hotels so I have been traveling in Europe and other places, and this one seems very nice, very good. A: Yeah, what do you like about it? D6: The environment, and the reception and the hospitality served by these people good nice. A: You know, the hotel has won a price. It s the most something hotel in the world. D6: Is it so, okay. A: Do you have an idea about what that could be? D6: It could be the architecture. A: Yeah, do you think it s special? D6: Yes. Good, nice. A: You don t have any other? D6: No, I have not seen this in any other Scandinavian hotels in which I traveled. I have been to China, I have been to Dubai Dubai of course some hotels are there. I don t go to this kind of hotels, but this is a good hotel. Nice. It s good to stay here. A: Well, I can tell you that this hotel is the greenest hotel in the world. That means that it does so much for the environment. It does not spend any energy, and it does not spend any water, it s used again and again and again. D6: Recycle.. A: Yes, it s the best in the world to recycle. They care about the earth. Deltager 6 15

D6: Is it a new hotel? A: Yes D6: How old is this? A: It s one and a half year old. D6: That s all? Okay, good A: It s just been built. It was built when there in Copenhagen was a climate conference, and there came people all around the world to talk about climate in Denmark. Then they built it. What do you think about it when I tell you that it s the greenest hotel in the world? D6: That s fine, that s very interesting you know. Something new that I m hearing this, that it is special here. In Scandinavia they really appreciate the place.. I mean the country. They do so much importance for the green I mean, for the environment. The politicians, the EU politicians are trying to support everything, you know.. A: Yeah, so what do you think when you stay at a hotel that is like that? D6: It should be fine. I just came, so I haven t but it s fine. A good feeling. The moment I entered it, it was a good feeling I had. A: That s a good thing Deltager 6 16

Deltager 7 A: Well, as I said, I am writing a master thesis about this hotel and I have been studying for five months now about this place so I would like to know what your impression is about it. Why are you in Copenhagen in the first place? D7: Just vacation A: Where are you from? D7: From New York A: Oh, That s far away. And you came in this weather.. D7: It was beautiful when we came in, but it changed very fast, drastically. A: Well, I was once in New York and there was the worst thunderstorm I had ever imagined. Because the buildings are so high. So I was afraid. D7: You were afraid that the buildings are going to fall? A: Yes [D7 griner] A: What do you think when you look at the hotel? D7: The hotel is very unique. A: In which way? D7: In the artistic way. The architecture of it, the design. We talked about it when we came in. We talked about that it s like a minimalist style. And we were just talking about our rooms, the space.. it s very small, very minimum. Everything, the design is what they call minimalistic style. So it is very interesting. A: The style, yeah. Have you noticed any other differences here? D7: The shower. It s like a quarter is covered. The rest is open, so the flour gets silky. After you have showered, it is swimming. It s a little weird. We are used to shower curtain what close up the whole place, or glass all the way, like a door. But the shower here is only one little peas of glass, and the rest is open. So when you shower and you wash yourself the water is floating outside and all over the flour. It gets pretty messy. A: Okay So you don t have anything else to add? D7: Like suggestion? A: No no, just your thoughts.. D7: It s cool. When we look at this building here, outside this hotel has so much space. Maybe they should do something, have a restaurant or something along this strip, so people can walk you know you can do a bit of business there as well. A: So that it is more interesting? Deltager 7 17

D7: Yes. A: Yeah, because it s a new area, and it takes a lot of time to build it up. D7: But they should look at developing, because it s like a waste of space, you know. A: Yeah Why did you choose this hotel? D7: Well hmm because we when we stay at hotels when we travel we have a package deal, and this is one of the chains. Crowne Plaza is a chain of hotels that we use. A: By we do you mean you as a private person? D7: Yeah. A: So you just chose it because D7: Yes, because it was within the program that we belong to. A: There is a point system? D7: Yes exactly. A: Ah okay Well, if I tell you, that the hotel has won a price for being the most something in the world, the best in the world of its kind, do you have an idea about what that could be? D7: The best in the world? Hmm Really at this point we haven t been here long enough to know what that could be. What could they be considered the best of? Design? But in the world? What is it you tell us. A: I will tell you in a while, but I will just ask you if you can D7: If we can figure it out? A: Yes. D7: Ah okay Eco-friendly? A: Why do you say that? D7: Because of the panels everything you see, the material they use. And I would imagine you know, it looks like a lot of hotels are going green, like they say, you know very eco-friendly. That s what I get from the impression of the material in the building. A: Do you? You are the first one.. D7: To touch upon it? A: Yes. It s because it s the greenest hotel in the world. D7: Bingo! Do I get a price? A: You should. I m impressed. D7: You said it was the..? A: The greenest in the world Deltager 7 18

D7: Oh, the greenest in the world, really? Wow A: Because the environmental friendly thinking is built into everything here, and everything is done in an ethical correct way. D7: When you look outside the window you can see that the glass itself it has got a tint, which make it easier to keep the cool in and the heat out or vice versa. You can see that when you look outside the window on the glass itself. A: Yes What do you think about it, to live in the greenest hotel in the world? D7: That is really cool, pretty unique. We didn t even think of that, you know I would not say that it s a travel consideration.. A: No, not at all but now that you are here, so what.. D7: I feel green [griner] it feels good I think. You are paying a keeper to pay along a project like that, and maybe it can be imitated, or cached on so that other places do the same. A: So you think it is okay? But you wouldn t think about it? D7: Well, if as far as myself personally it is not something that I take too much into consideration. You know what I mean I think that as we go along, we start getting more into that, when we start hearing about all the things happening all around the world, natural disasters and all the things like that, and pollution start getting you know, maybe we start realizing to go green a little more and then you start picking up places like this to stay in. That will change the whole protocol for that. A: But for now it is just okay? D7: Now this is great. It will be better when I start drinking. A: Then you will feel better here? D7: Yes, I will get a little medication [griner]. A: Did you just arrive to Copenhagen? D7: Yeah A: And you flied all the way from New York D7: Yes A: Oh, okay the last thing I want you to look at are these pictures. I have been reading a lot about this subject, and here is what I found out that people care about. I would like you to pick something up that is important for you when you choose the hotel. You cannot choose loyalty programs, but that is maybe the price.. Or, what is important for you, and what is more important than something else? D7: I believe central location I will think the facilities too, something you consider when you are looking at the internet, you will look at the pictures, you will look at amenities, what s available Deltager 7 19
