1 Accelerated Dual Degree Final Report Committee members: Mary Ann Trail, chair, Monir Sharobeam, Marisa Levy, Jung Lee, Michael Busler, Patricia McGinnis, Gorica Majstorovic. December 21, 2009 Charge The subcommittee is charged with the task of addressing college-wide guidelines for two kinds of Accelerated Dual Degree s. I. Accelerated Dual Degrees within an existing II. Accelerated Dual Degrees with Interdisciplinary Coordination Research A review of the educational literature in ERIC and Educational Research Complete did not result in any examples of best practices. We decided at that point that we needed to look directly at school websites to see what others are offering. We searched the following: Middle States Website Colleges and Universities Sister State Colleges and Rutgers University Peer groups from CLA and NESSE. Since these change each year we chose the peer group from the 2008 NESSE Cohort A random smattering of other colleges Terminology We found that terminology varied across the schools but included the following: Accelerated Dual Degree (ADD*) Joint Degree 5 year Joint BA/MA, joint BS,MS 4+1 MBA Concurrent Undergrad-Grad Studies Dual Degree s usually means Joint undergrad majors except at NJIT Combined BS/MS Accelerated Degree Accelerated MA especially in the Health Sciences 1

2 We limited our search to s that combined a bachelor s degree and a master s degree within an accelerated timeframe (ADD*). We noted articulation agreements between schools but concentrated on s that were offered by one institution. We searched each web site for the following information: 1. School name 2. College-wide policies or (department)-based policies? 3. Names of the /Department/Field/School offering ADD? 4. Terminology the school uses (ADD, DD, Five-year, joint degree,...)? 5. Requirements to take graduate (GPA, GRE, minimum in undergrad...)? 6. Maximum number of shared (double-counted) () Note: If the school uses different terms (Quarter system instead of Semester, Unit instead of Credits etc.), we agreed to translate it as best as we could into Stockton terminology (e.g Semester system, 3 graduate = 1 course) 7. How many () are required to complete a master's degree? 8. Any other particular features? New Jersey State Colleges and Universities. School Minimum Undergrad for graduation Grad + or - ADD*? 9 Oklahoma s Engineering School of Chemical, Biological and Materials 4 or 12 be a lot of autonomy FINDINGS There seems to be two ways the accelerated s are designed. One is to allow juniors and seniors to take graduate that are counted both for undergraduate credit and graduate credit. Our research shows that the majority of schools in this category allow between 9 and 15 to be used for both degrees. However, some schools did not specify how many were allowed to be double counted. The second model is to design a that allows the student to take a set fast-track curriculum and finish in 5 years with both a Bachelors and Masters. In this model there is no double counting of but electives at the undergrad level are eliminated as well as duplicate. University of Southern Florida is such a model. ADD* s seem to be predominately in the fields of education, business, criminal justice and public policy. Some universities such as Chicago, Boston, Colorado, Iowa and Dallas seem to offer ADD* s in every major. RECOMMENDATIONS: 1. We believe that all students should fulfill the requirements of both their undergraduate and graduate degree s. The increasing emphasis at Stockton on an engaged student body that reaches maturity through a sound educational experience that values interdisciplinary learning consistent with Stockton s liberal arts philosophy and tradition, from freshman seminar to senior standing, should not be compromised. This means that both undergraduate and graduate curriculum should have sufficient depth and breadth of coursework at different levels. 2. For this reason, we recommend that Stockton s policies be brought closer to the general practice in this area. We recommend a college-wide policy that limits double-counting or sharing of to no more than Qualified students should be allowed to take graduate instead of undergraduate to fulfill their undergraduate degree, as is done at Ramapo, Rutgers, George Mason. In this way, the rigor of the course would be at a graduate level. 3. Most schools seem to have a few college wide policies usually regarding number of to be shared and general eligibility requirements. The curriculum of each is designed at the level and we believe Stockton should follow this model. 9

10 4. We should not renege on the promise we have made to students enrolled in our undergraduate. For that reason, we believe an exception to the college-wide policy should be continued for the existing Masters in Criminal Justice and Environmental Studies that would permit students to double count up to half of the 36- required for a Masters degree. Future Considerations The Committee would like to encourage Accelerated Dual Degrees that cross disciplinary lines. Suny Binghamton and University of Michigan can offer many examples of cross-disciplinary ADDs*. We encourage the College to consider joint or accelerated s between two institutions in areas where we do not offer degrees. 10
