Juniata Native Helps Commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Midway Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Edward N. Fallen, a 1996 graduate of Northeast Catholic High School, Philadelphia, Pa., is currently deployed, and along with fellow Sailors and Marines aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Midway with a ceremony, a fitting tribute given the ship s close ties to the battle. The previous USS Enterprise (CV 6) and her wing played a vital role in the pivotal World War II battle that took place June 4-7, The Battle of Midway is regarded as the turning point in the war of the Pacific.Alongside 3 other carriers the USS Enterprise and the U.S. Strike Forces defeated the Imperial Japanese navy carrier task force under the direction of commander in chief of the Japanese Combined Fleet, Adm. Yamamoto. USS Enterprise and her wing were credited with sinking 3 of the 4 Japanese carriers that day at Midway. At the opening of the ceremony, Rear Adm. Ted Carter, commander, Enterprise Carrier Strike Group described the heroic roles of the Sailors and Marines who fought and died during the historic battle. We were not without losses of our own, however, said Carter. Although Enterprise was not attacked during the battle, her air wing suffered the heaviest losses of any air wing at sea up to that point. Hamilton, Commander, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1, Capt. Jeffery L. Trent and Capt. Joseph J. Leonard, commodore, Destroyer Squadron 2, also spoke about the roles USS Enterprise, the air wing and the destroyer strike group played during the battle. Knowing this is our legacy, it is an absolute honor and privilege to remember the heroes of the Battle of Midway aboard our nation s most historic and legendary aircraft carrier, a great warship with a longstanding bond with Destroyer Squadron Two, said Leonard. The partnership between Enterprise and Destroyer Squadron 2 began at Midway 70 years ago and continues today. As part of the commemoration, Enterprise s First Class Petty Officers by performed a wreath-laying ceremony on the fantail aboard the ship. The fallen Sailors and Marines were also honored with a 21-gun salute and the sounding of Taps. Aircraft assigned to CVW-1 performed a missing-man flyover formation to commemorate the aviators who lost during the battle.throughout the course of the day Enterprise went on to announce a historical timeline recounting the events of the Battle of Midway over the ship s announcing system. 6 JUNIATA NEWS, JUNE 19, Page 6 LETTERS / OP-ED New EPA Regulations Will Cost Millions, Not Improve Air Quality To the Editor: As the fourth -largest in the country, Pennsylvania s coal industry employs 52,000 people. New regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency could force utilities across America to abandon coal as a fuel for power generation, which could very soon put each one of these men and women out of work. I am a staunch proponent of clean air, but the new EPA regulations will cost power plants and consumers millions, but won t measurably improve air quality. On the other hand, several Venture Crew 100 Fundraiser Venture Crew 100 will be holding a fundraiser at Buffalo Wild Wings at 9701 Roosevelt Boulevard on June 25th from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. Buffalo Wild wings will donate 10 percent of pre-taxed food sales made during those hours to the Venture Crew if you say you are there for Venture Crew 100 s Fundraiser. Please come out, enjoy yourself, watch the Phillies game and help support our Venture Crew! Thank you in advance from Crew 100. independent research groups have concluded that the new regulations would put thousands of jobs in jeopardy and increase Pennsylvania s energy costs by as much as 8 percent. The choice is clear to me: we simply cannot afford more layoffs and price increases. Lawmakers in Washington will move to rein-in the EPA with legislation sponsored by Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe. I believe it s time we stand up for the hard-working men and women who work in Pennsylvania s coal mines by supporting this effort to protect Pennsylvania s coal industry. Reductions in the coal-industry workforce would be a severe setback for this region s slowly recovering economy. We have a chance to put a stop to this potential disaster and, for the sake of Pennsylvania families. I hope we will take advantage of that opportunity. State Sen. 7 JUNIATA NEWS, JUNE 19, Page 7 Sánchez Legislation Addressing Public Safety Hazard of High Risk Vacant Properties Passes Bill , introduced by Councilwoman Sánchez and passed last week by Philadelphia s City Council, will address the problem of high-risk vacant buildings by treating these structures as public safety hazards. The recent fire at a Kensington warehouse, located in Councilwoman Sánchez s Seventh District, tragically cost the lives of two brave firefighters and destroyed or threatened many adjacent homes and businesses. In response, the scope of the legislation was expanded to include large vacant commercial or industrial properties. These buildings, along with others that pose significant safety hazards, will have to meet several new code requirements. Owners must register with the City of Philadelphia, post contact information, and regularly inspect the properties. Similar requirements were imposed on the owners of foreclosed vacant residential property in 2010 Philadelphia, PA Book Your Party Today! * Catering Available or Bring Your Own * DJ Available or Bring Your Own * Large Dance Floor E. CAYUGA ST following adoption of bill , introduced by Council members Greenlee and Tasco. Any large vacant commercial or industrial property must have a bond deposited with the City in order to provide financing if the City of Philadelphia is forced to intervene to repair or seal a property. Large vacant commercial or industrial properties that are found to be significant fire hazards, for example due to their proximity to residential housing, will be treated as imminently dangerous and will require prompt remediation of the hazardous condition. Councilwoman Sánchez believes that addressing Philadelphia s high rate of vacant, blighted properties is important for both Philadelphia s economic health and its public safety. As Chair of Council s Committee on Licenses and Inspections, and cosponsor of an innovative bill authorizing the creation of a Philadelphia Land Bank to manage vacant properties, she has advanced both legislative and policy solutions to this problem. Bill was cosponsored by Council members Greenlee and Tasco. The changes will go into effect 30 days after the bill becomes law. The grandparents scam has taken a very creative turn. In the typical grandparents scam, a grandchild will call his grandparent and claim that there s an emergency Dear Mom & Dad, and that money must be wired to solve the problem. 13 JUNIATA NEWS, JUNE 19, Page 13 FAMILY FEATURES Desserts can seem even sweeter when dressed especially for the occasion. Serving unique flower and butterfly-topped cupcakes for a garden-themed party, mono - grammed cookies for a family reunion, or a show-stopper birthday cake defi - nitely makes the celebration more memorable. Even without a dab of decorating experience, dazzling results can be created in your own kitchen. Picture-perfect cake borders, flower bouquets, cup - cake toppers, accent bows, sports and patriotic designs, and more are just a punch away. It s so easy and fun, too. Use punches with various inserts to cut or punch shapes from Sugar Sheets. These thin, sweet sheets are actually edible decorat ing paper. When shapes cut from the sheets are placed directly on a surface covered in icing or fondant, they blend right in. They can also be used to create multi-layered and three dimensional toppers. Simple, sophis - ticated or sensational what ever your style or the occasion, you can do it. The dessert table will never be the same once you punch, cut and decorate. The decorating experts from Wilton share some tips to get you started. Sugar Sheet Decorating Start with edible, flexible Sugar Sheets. Avail - able in solid colors and lively patterns, even the alphabet, these sheets are ready-made no prep, no mess. Sugar Sheets have a light sweet flavor that works well with butter cream or fondant-covered treats. Simply punch or cut these sweet sheets to create uniform designs and shapes for your sweet treats. He who thinks but does not learn is in great danger. * If you ever have occasion to refer to an item that pertains to walnuts, it will be useful to have the word juglandaceous at your disposal. * It s well-known that the United States is a melting pot of nationalities. At the end of the 1800s, New York City was so diverse that it had more Irish than any city except Dublin, and a larger Russian population than was to be found at that time in the city of Kiev. The only two cities in the world that had more German speakers were Vienna and Berlin, and Milan and Naples had fewer Italians than New York. * If you re like the average American, you will eat 1.5 tons of food this year. * Beeswax candles are valued largely because they don t drip as other candles do, but they re also very durable. Fatherhood has been degraded and ridiculed by Hollywood for many years. When was the last time you saw a father on TV who wasn t a complete idiot? The children (and sometimes the mother) are usually shown to have the snappy comebacks, while the dad remains clueless. (There are a few exceptions to this rule.) Here is a quote from the makers of Courageous: Four men, one calling: To serve and protect. As law enforcement officers, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, David Thomson, and Shane Fuller are confident and focused. The poverty rate for married couples with children was ONLY 6.4 %. Did you know that engaged fathers are probably our best weapon against crime? 15 JUNIATA NEWS, JUNE 19, Page 15 PICKS OF THE WEEK Big Miracle (PG) This basedon-a-true-story family flick tells the tale of three trapped whales and the people who come together to save them. A likable young TV reporter in small-town Alaska (John Krasinksi) finds out about a family of whales stuck under the ice, cut off from the ocean. What starts as a local news piece becomes a story watched by the whole nation as an activist (Drew Barrymore) and many others (it s a big cast) get involved. Krasinski brings his Jim from The Office charm, and helps keep the movie light. It is, after all, a movie set in the real world where saving the whales requires help from such cynical sources as politicians and oil executives. The balance between reality and feel-good is impressive, and successfully delivers the warm, fuzzy feeling. Wanderlust (R) Linda (Jennifer Anniston) and George (Paul Rudd) are a Manhattan couple frayed and overpressured by the big city life. When George loses his job, the couple decide to pack it in and start over somewhere else. On their way to Atlanta, they stumble upon Elysium, a sort of hippie commune full of friendly weirdos who invite the couple to stay. The bottom line is this: David Wain writes, directs and edits funny things. He has many funny friends whom he casts in his movies, and they usually give great performances. His works usually fall in with the absurd, subversive and cultish, but this film is aimed at a slightly broader audience. Wanderlust (which he directed and co-wrote) isn t his finest work, but it certainly produces laughs. His older brother, Pat (Ed Helms), has a wife (Judy Greer), a job and an unimpressive place to live. While running an errand for their mother, Jeff gets caught up in Pat s neurotic plot to catch his wife cheating. An awkward, funny, authentic story comes together over the rest of that day. Project X (R) A handful of middle-class suburban teenagers throw a mega-huge party, and film the whole thing. It s not a wild premise. The most audacious thing about it is that the movie uses the found-footage perspective, and expects that to bring this non-story to life. The result is 87 minutes of mean-spirited adolescent humor. The characters and filmmakers have seized upon the tenets of repugnant high-school mentality: women are sex objects sent to earth to frustrate young men; anybody different must be ridiculed; and everything is a competition.
