3 Welcome to the Experience Congratulations on your acceptance to the Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy (HLCA). This is a one-of-a-kind program designed for children of Honeywell employees to heighten their interest in the study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) as well as to prepare them for the college experience. In 2013, students from over 29 countries and 30 U.S. states participated in the Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy. This weeklong program is an incredible opportunity to meet and learn with students from around the world, with various backgrounds and experiences. The U.S. Space & Rocket Center (USSRC) located in Huntsville, Alabama, has used its museum education programs, SPACE CAMP and AVIATION CHALLENGE, has used experiential learning to broaden a student s ability to process concepts and ideas for more than thirty years. Thank you all for the time, effort and support you gave James on his recent trip to HLCA He arrived home safe, buzzing from all the experiences he encountered. I would like to say a big thanks to you from myself and my wife. You have given him an experience that we probably could never have thought of. Thank you for inspiring him for his future. Parent of 2013 Participant The USSRC is known for successfully harnessing the excitement of space and aviation to encourage the study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Results of the programs include life skills such as an understanding of leadership fundamentals, collaboration and teamwork, effective communication, and analytical thinking. These benefits are more than mere byproducts; they are, in fact, the intended outcomes of the intensive experiences and challenges presented to the students that attend SPACE CAMP and AVIATION CHALLENGE programs throughout the year. The HLCA is intended to amplify and enhance the natural outcomes of the USSRC s programs. Through collaborations with experts in the field of leadership training and cutting-edge scientific technology, the USSRC will challenge HLCA participants to do more than merely understand leadership and teamwork as concepts and academic exercises. We will challenge them to recognize these concepts as tools and to utilize these tools to affect change and achieve a desired end. Each module of the HLCA will be presented as a challenge. Each challenge will naturally compel participants to engage and to assess their own aptitudes and abilities as they relate to the team as well as to the specific challenge. Additionally, students will need to think strategically and communicate their ideas and thoughts effectively to the benefit of the team and the success of the mission. The core competencies of the program fall into the following five (5) categories: Purposeful Leadership Integrated Planning Team Trust and Cohesion Critical Thinking Effective Communication 3

4 Through formal debriefs, students will analyze actions and outcomes as they relate to the five core competencies. Trained team mentors and Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy Ambassadors will guide these mission debriefs to ensure that the competencies, or tools, are recognized and their useful application evaluated. Many of the challenges will require participants to present their findings and/ or solutions to a panel of scientific experts from the field most applicable to the challenge. HLCA participants will come away with a better understanding of what it is that they do well, recognition of those areas where interpersonal skills can be strengthened, and a new willingness to use the strengths and abilities of others to accomplish a goal. College students will serve as mentors to each group of 16 students participating in the HLCA. Mentors have at least two years of college academic experience. Many are majoring in science, mathematics, and engineering at various colleges and universities across the United States and are working at the USSRC as part of a co-op/ internship program. The USSRC has 24-hour nursing and security staff on site. The USSRC has a full-time administration and supervisory staff that will coordinate all aspects of the program. If you need to contact a member of the USSRC staff at any point before or during the program, please Honeywell@spacecamp.com or call Volunteers from Honeywell and other corporations will take time off from their careers as scientists and engineers to serve as judges or panel experts and to assist in specific challenges. Additionally, professors and students of The University of Alabama in Huntsville will facilitate a number of the challenges. The University of Alabama in Huntsville offers college credit for participation in the HLCA. Information about the credit will be provided in graduation materials. If you have any questions, please contact Honeywell@spacecamp.com. Read this handbook carefully. It provides all the information you need to know to prepare for the Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy. Please direct any questions to Honeywell@spacecamp.com. I wanted to thank the team involved in making this program a success. Jordan arrived back home exhausted yet very excited with his experience. He thoroughly enjoyed his week in HLCA and can t wait to apply next year as a mentor. Parent of 2013 Participant 4

5 Program Preparation There is no preparation necessary for the program challenges. All necessary background information will be provided as part of each challenge. The only requirement needed is proper rest and a desire to work together with participants from around the world to solve current scientific challenges. Although the daily schedule of events will not be available prior to the program, each day will begin around 7:00 a.m. and end around 10:30 p.m. The week will be full of exciting and engaging speakers and activities. It will be a learning experience like no other! Online Registration All participants should have received a document with instructions about online confirmation. Please complete the confirmation by December 20, If you are unable to complete the confirmation or you did not receive this information, please contact Honeywell@spacecamp.com. Expenses Honeywell will cover the cost of the participants tuition, room, and board from arrival in Huntsville until departure from Huntsville. Participants should bring extra spending money for their travel time while in airports. We also recommend that participants have a credit card in case of emergencies. Each airline has different fees and requirements for luggage. Please check your airlines policies carefully. Each participant will need to ensure that they have the appropriate amount of cash at the end of the week to be able to check their luggage. This fee will not be covered by Honeywell. Souvenirs will be available for purchase from gift shops at the USSRC. Vending machines are located throughout all the facilities. Although we discourage any students from carrying large amounts of cash, $25- $50 is recommended for miscellaneous purchases. Automated Teller Machines (ATM s) are located at the airports and the USSRC, for a fee. The USSRC cannot facilitate any monetary transfers during the program week. Please DO NOT wire money. Neither the USSRC nor the Huntsville Airport has the ability to exchange currency. Please exchange currency before arriving in Huntsville. 13 Quick Reference for Traveling Students Parents: Please tear out this sheet and send with your student along with their travel documents. It will serve as a reference sheet in case your son or daughter has issues while traveling. Be Familiar with Travel Route To reach Huntsville International Airport, most participants will have to change planes at least once on their trip. Be familiar with your particular transfer airport layout. Be sure to leave enough time in between flights to allot for minor delays, going through customs, or walking between gates and terminals. Along the Way When you arrive at transferring airport, go immediately to the departure boards to verify which gate you will be departing from. Gates change often, so be sure to double check. Although the following steps are not necessary, it would be wise to follow these. If there is a problem, you will have an advantage over other passengers. Thank you for having been able to offer such an exceptional experience to my son Jerome! HLCA is an excellent way to continue to inspire students about science and technology! Parent of 2013 Participant When you get to your departure gate, check in again with the airline staff at that particular gate. Let them know you are on your way to SPACE CAMP and let them see that you are a student traveling alone. Tell them that you want to confirm you have a seat on the flight and that everything is still on time. Often times the airline staff may know of a pending delay, but have not yet announced it. By letting them know you are on your way to SPACE CAMP, they might be able to reroute you on another flight or airline before the rush of all affected passengers. Stay in the gate area. Notify the airline staff if you leave the area to use the rest room or get something to eat. Keeping in touch with them will help them remember you if there are any problems. Look around the gate you might meet other Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy participants on their way to Huntsville! Our staff will be at your gate to greet you when you arrive in Huntsville. They will be wearing a blue flight suit or a SPACE CAMP shirt. Do not hesitate to approach them and introduce yourself. They will be greeting each flight upon arrival and will meet you as you get off the plane! If your flight is delayed, our staff will be there to meet you at the new arrival - regardless of the time of day! If Your Flight is Delayed If it is a minor delay, the airline will post the new arrival time. Do not worry about delays that have the same flight numbers. Our airport staff will be following your flight and will be aware of late arrival times. 13

14 If the Airline Announces Your Flight has been Cancelled Follow the instructions of the airline staff to get in line or move to another gate. While you are doing that, also call the help desk of the travel agency or group that booked your travel. That number should be on the bottom of your travel itinerary. If you have met other participants, stay together. That will help the airline keep track of everyone and make sure you all make it to Huntsville together. In the unlikely event your flight is cancelled and the airline cannot get you to Huntsville on Saturday, return to the ticket counter and insist on a meal voucher and hotel voucher. The airline might state that weather cancellations do not entitle the traveler to these vouchers. However, as a minor traveling alone, the airline should do everything in their power to keep you safe. If you have met others of the same gender traveling to SPACE CAMP, share rooms for added safety. If you are delayed, rerouted, or are forced to spend the night, please call or We need to know the name of your hotel and your anticipated arrival time. Also be sure to call your parents. You can call the above number at anytime and someone will be available to assist you. 15 Quick Reference for Parents Parents: Please tear out this sheet and keep it accessible while your son or daughter is at the Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy in Huntsville, Alabama. It will answer many of your questions and make it easier for you to reach your child or our staff. For emergencies, you can reach your child by calling Our staff will ensure that your child receives any and all messages. This number is available 24 hours a day. The HLCA participants are busy from early morning until late at night. They have a limited amount of time to get ready in the morning or clean up at night. Do not be concerned if you do not hear from your child often during the week. Depending on the day s activities, it might be several hours before they are able to call you back. Please indicate in your message if it is urgent enough that they should interrupt their activities to contact you immediately. All students will be required to call parents on Saturday after their arrival in Huntsville. If you have caller ID block, please remove this service during the time your child is attending the program. I had an amazing week at HLCA. I thank you all for giving me this unique opportunity! I consider myself very lucky! 2013 Participant Students will have access to phones that require a calling card. Cell phones may also be used during designated calling times. Students will be able to call home only prior to the beginning of the day s activities, at meal times, or at the close of the program day. Please do not send mail/ care packages to your child.
