A very warm welcome to our new families; we look forward to getting to know you over the year. We hope that you are all settling well into the routine. All the staff would like to say a very big thank you for the wonderful gifts they have received. We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break and wish you a happy and peaceful new year. We would also like to thank Ana (Zara s mummy) who personally donated her time, funds and creative mind to the potato printing and baubles each of the children made. The family also supplied the straw for the nativity scenery. Nativity concerts It was great to see so many family members at the Christmas nativities. The children were amazing they practiced hard and it showed when singing and speaking confidently in front of so many adults. We are all so proud of them. Thank you to the dads and grandads that helped carry the bales to the hall and cars. I hope your hands recovered okay. Holistic development Please feel free to ask any questions or make any suggestions regarding your child s development. If you feel you need more than a few minutes please arrange a meeting with your key person. Matilda De angelo is our special needs coordinator, should you have any concerns about your child s development. We have a suggestion box available for any ideas you may have regarding the nursery environment. You could also use this to tell us activities your child is

2 enjoying at home. We may be able to incorporate these ideas at Montessori. It is important to us and the children that we have a great parent/nursery partnership. Drop off/collection Once your new child has settled we would like all our parent/carers to say goodbye to their children at the door and encourage them to enter independently. We will support your children with their belongings. If you would like to have a few moments with a teacher please wait until the children are in the building safely or have left the site with their parents. Thank you. BANK STAFF Are you able to help out and be on our bank staff list. As a nursery we are always updating our teacher/safety training and often need staff cover for mornings/afternoons and sometimes full days. We would like to encourage parents to be part of the team. You would be paid for your time and need to do a DBS safety check online. Spare Clothes, Nappies, Wellies and Warm, waterproof clothing Accidents and spillages do happen in the nursery, even if your child is older. We ask that you supply spare clothes in your child s back pack. Please keep back packs in the boxes provided. If your child wears nappies, please remember to supply these along with wipes. It is to the benefit of all to have fresh air daily. Outside play is an opportunity for the children to run around and develop their gross motor and spatial awareness skills. The benefits of being outside outweigh being cold or having a cough/cold, so please ensure that the children are dressed appropriately. Please also ensure that named wellies are brought and taken home with your child daily; please place these at the bottom of the trolleys. Shoes are needed indoors. Warm, waterproof coats are also required daily now that the winter is upon us. SAFTEY ITEMS Safety of the children in the setting is our priority and we ask the following to ensure that they are kept safe in our free flow environment. Scarves/ gloves and draw string bags Please be aware of leaving your child s scarf at school. As a free flow nursery these can be surprisingly dangerous and catch in our wheeled toys outside. Gloves need to be loose or

3 attached to each sleeve of the coat on very short strings so as not to catch on toys or climbing apparatus. The children s bags are kept outside owing to limited space indoors. Please ensure that they are not draw string bags and that they only have changes of clothes or nappies in. Please remove plastic nappy sacks and creams. Please check that your child has not brought items in from home as some can be dangerous for our under threes (choke hazards). Other toys and Jewellery Although we wish to encourage Show and Tell items from home for topics, we kindly ask that no other toys or jewellery be brought into the setting. Some children find touching/borrowing hard to resist and others do not want to share. Losing these precious items is very upsetting for the child. Necessary comforters like small soft toys, dummies and blankets are obviously allowed. Please name them clearly. Children, who enter with a dummy, please bring a small labelled container with a lid. Charity The charity Guildford Montessori nursery will be supporting and raising money for during 2015 will be Challengers Guildford We would be really grateful if you could donate to cake sales and other events through the year. Cake sale funds will be shared between challengers and the nursery extracurricular materials. Snow! Should we experience snow, please remember to check our website before heading to nursery to see if we have managed to open. Forest school/fence free fun We started forest school last week the children had a great time and collected leaves and sticks for a hedge hog house they have also been making mobiles with sticks and string the children also climbed small trees and chased bubbles. Mrs Cavender and Miss Clayton will arrange weekly trips on Monday and Friday afternoons, lesson plans will be done as well as free exploration. If you have any kites, saws, hammers, ropes or an old suit case to take everything over please let us now. If you could spare some time to help with forest school we would be very grateful it will run from approximately 1.40pm until 2.50pm. If the children are cold and uncomfortable then we will come back in. Please ensure they have the appropriate clothing to keep them warm and dry. Some of the activities may include the following. Bug houses. Discuss with the children the change in season and how the weather is often cold in winter and animals and bugs need to find warm places to stay. Ask the children if they can think of anywhere that an animal or bug might like to stay to keep warm. Encourage the children to look around their environment and help the bugs/animals to make homes for the winter. Encourage the use of sticks, grass, leaves, mud etc. Once each child has made their home ask them to show each other what they have made and who is going to live in the home.

4 Mud paintings. Take paper and large paint brushes outside with you. Encourage the children to use mud/clay to create mud paintings. If the mud is dry encourage them to hunt for a puddle to moisten the mud so that it is runny enough to paint a picture. If the ground is very dry then it may be necessary to take some water outside. Once each child has painted their picture encourage them to decorate it with leaves, seeds, grass etc. Allow time for a group discussion about the paintings once the children have completed them. Tracks. Look carefully at the tracks that the children make in the mud/grass/snow. Encourage them to look at each other s. Look to see if any animal tracks can be found. Draw tracks in the mud/snow with sticks. If it is snowing encourage the children to lie in the snow flat on their backs with their arms and legs out and to slowly move their arms and legs together and then apart, to make a snow angel. When the children stand up they will be able to see their imprint in the snow. Guildford in bloom Guildford Montessori nursery school will be entering the Guildford in bloom competition later on in the year and we would really appreciate parent/carer support in managing this ( It s our first time) We have quite a large veggie spot and the children did brilliantly caring for the tomatoes, beans, pumpkins and cucumbers last year but we want to go further and plant flowers this year as well. Mrs Das and Mrs Flack will be the coordinators of this event if you can spare any containers, seeds bulbs or time please let us know. FEET FUNDING You and your family may be entitled to Free Early Education for 2 year olds. Please either speak to member of staff or go on the government website for early year s childcare.
