8 Building Bridges to the Future World Class Education... Real-World Affordability Higher education in America is at a crossroads. The perception held by many is that a college degree now costs a whole lot more than its worth. The ACCS, however, continues to stay firmly on the right side of that value equation. The average cost to attend an ACCS institution is only about half that of most other public institutions in the state. Keeping education affordable and accessible for Alabamians is how we continue to strengthen our state s workforce and economy. $20, AVG. 13 WCCS pitcher Simmons drafted by Diamondbacks A faulty computer forced Kevin Simmons to wait a few extra minutes Saturday to celebrate one of the biggest moments of his life. Simmons was selected in the 16th round of the 2014 MLB Draft, but he missed the chance to hear his name called because his computer froze right before he was picked. We missed it on the TV because our computer froze, so I had family calling to ask me if I saw it and I asked them What did I miss? Simmons said. And then the Diamondbacks called me. Once Simmons received a phone call from Arizona s Joe Mason, the first scout that came to watch him pitch this year, the celebration was on. They said Congratulations, we got you, Simmons said. It was the area scout that had been following me all season. Friends and family chased Simmons around the porch with confetti shooters to celebrate. Other players from Wallace have gone on to other schools and been drafted, but Simmons is the first player from Wallace to be picked in the MLB Draft, Patriots athletic director Marcus Hannah said. Simmons graduated from Dallas County High School and went to Mississippi Valley State for one year, before transferring to Wallace so he could be closer to home. This year he started throwing the ball in the mid-90s, which caught the eye of major league scouts. He finished third in the National Junior College Athletic Association in strikeouts with 109. He just keeps getting better, better and better, and I don t think we ve seen the best of him yet, Wallace head coach Frank Elliot said. Elliot said with the work ethic that Simmons has, he could definitely find himself on a major league roster one day. The people that I know that have been drafted, the ones I know that have made it to the big leagues, have that same work ethic, Elliot said. Simmons signed with West Alabama in the fall, but after being drafted Saturday, he is planning to pursue his major league dreams. He truly works hard even with the gifts that God has given him, Hannah said. He s a very hard worker out there trying to make his gift better. The wait was a little longer than Simmons had anticipated. After talking with teams over the last couple of weeks leading up to the draft, he felt there was a good chance he could go on day two of the draft. A large group of family and friends held a party for him at his aunt s house, but he went to bed Friday still waiting for his major league moment. On Saturday, it finally came. Simmons is waiting to hear back from the Diamondbacks about where he goes from here, and he expects there to be the equivalent of a rookie camp before he finds out where he will be playing. Arizona has minor league affiliates in Nevada, California, Indiana, Oregon, Montana and Mobile home of the Bay Bears, so there is a chance he could play some of his minor league games close to home. 13 WCCS

23 N E W S R E L E A S E Wallace Community College-Selma has partnered with Tuskegee University and gained a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute for the Biomedical Program. This program is aligned with the Stem Program: science, technology, engineering and medicine. The goal of the program is to increase the number of graduates pursing degrees in these fields of study. Also, it seeks scholars with a strong interest in research/medicine as a chosen career. Dallas County School System has partnered with Wallace Community College-Selma as a recipient of the Howard Hughes Grant. Today, 21 Howard Hughes Medical Institute Scholars from three Dallas County High Schools (Dallas County High, Keith High, and Southside High) are rigorously engaged in the program at Wallace Community College-Selma through the dual enrollment program. They are infused in a challenging college curriculum with science, math and research in preparation for their career path. They are also engaged in an advanced curriculum at their high schools. Howard Hughes Medical Institute allows scholars the freedom to explore things that they wouldn't otherwise do. Hughes was a patron of science. The lnstitute's mission is to unlock the secrets of life. It's all about that science. Howard Hughes was once the richest man in the world. He died more than a quarter-century ago, but as correspondent Lesley Stahl first reported last year, his last fortune is still making a powerful impact on the world and in Dallas County. Hughes' Medical Research Institute is America's second largest charity behind the Bill Gates foundation. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is a United States non-profit medical research organization based in Chevy Chase, Maryland. It was founded by the American businessman Howard Hughes in It is one of the largest private funding organizations for biological and medical research in the United States. 23 WCCS

24 Building Bridges to the Future Triplets, Thomas, Walter and Will Kendrick are moving forward in their career paths as Howard Hughes Medical Scholars. They are awesome scholars who give their studies a serious approach. They are juniors at Dallas County High School and have maintained academic success in high school as well as Wallace Community College as dual enrolled students. Thomas, Walter and Will have learned to blend academics, athletics and extra school activities into their career path through this outstanding grant program which aligns with the Stem Curriculum: science, engineering, technology, mathematics/medical. Thomas, Walter and Will offer much promise back to the community. They are dynamic leaders who can gain the cooperation and respect from their cohorts. The triplets take pride in contributing to the success of all. They are dedicated, respectful, loyal, enthusiastic, and professional at all times. At Wallace Community College, we delight in their successful attainments as they pursue goals and dreams. We wish them the best and brightest future. Triple Threat WILL - It has been a real challenge to juggle all the extra-curricular activities. Last year when the program started and we really weren't used to it yet, we had to drop all these activities we participate in, like football, band, hunting, church events, and social events until we knew how to handle them all. We didn't go to football practice for about half a month or so and really missed a lot, being that we had a new head coach. When school started, it got real hard because we had to balance the time we spent on high school work with the time we spent on college work. There were one or two weekends that our dad and mom forced us to take a break like going dove hunting or fishing. This program doesn't give us much of a summer either. We get to stay at home and read textbooks and work on college work while all our friends are working and having fun. In the end, though, I know that we will be the ones with the last laugh. WALTER - I think that the HHMI program will influence me to choose a better career path that needs a higher education level, like engineering or something like that. I know that if I can finish these classes as a high school student, I am capable of taking on a job of higher knowledge as an adult and be successful with it. TOMMY - I value the time spent and friendships made with the other students in the program from our school. We barely even knew each other last year, but now we have made friendships that will last a lifetime. I also value the college experience that we receive in high school. I know that when I get to college, I will be more prepared than all my other friends. WILL - I plan to give back to the community when I graduate from college. Once I get out of school, I plan on coming right back here to Selma and contributing to our economy and trying to make this city better than what it is now. If able, I would like to get together with some other people I know and create a scholarship fund that would pay for students at Dallas County High to take classes at Wallace. I think and hope that would be gift that keeps on giving.

28 WCCS Khamari J. Gibbs, a junior at Southside High School in Selma, AL is a dual-enrolled (Howard Hughes Medical Institute) HHMI scholar that maintains a 4.0 grade point average while being actively involved in extracurricular activities at his school and heavily involved in ministries at his church. Khamari began dual enrollment in the summer of 2013 through the HHMI partnership with Wallace Community College Selma (WCCS) and Tuskegee University and is on track to gain his Associates in Science Degree in May 2016, which will be the same month he will graduate from high school. Not only is Khamari balancing his college and high school course work, he is also the quarterback of the Southside High School Football team; as well as, a member of the varsity basketball and baseball teams. He is also a member of the BETA Club and Drama Team. In addition to his extracurricular school activities, he is active in his church Gospel Tabernacle Church of God in Christ. He is active in the Youth Ministry, serves on the audio-visual team and volunteers with the Summer Learning Camp and Food Share Ministry. He is also a member of the YMCA Leader s Club. Khamari believes in the value of hard work and lives by the motto, hard work beats talent, when talent does not work hard. He feels that being a part of dual enrollment will give him the jump he needs to be successful. He has witnessed the successes that his older sister, Martina, and brother, TyDorrian, have experienced in gaining Associates in Science along with their high school diploma. Additionally, being a part of the HHMI cohort has also been rewarding for Khamari. He has been afforded the opportunity to not only take classes and collaborate with students from the two other high schools in the Dallas County Schools Systems; but he has also had the opportunity to meet and engage in research activities with students from across the United States by participating in Discovery Trek at Tuskegee University for the past two summers. Khamari has received many academic and athletic honors and awards. Some of the honors and awards include All A Honor, Southside High School Future Leader, Selma Times Journal (STJ) 2014 Grid Iron Magazine cover, STJ All-County Football Team, as well as, the WALX-WJAM Player of the Week. Although Khamari is unsure which college he will attend upon graduating from high school and receiving his associates degree, he plans to major in either Physical Therapy or Physical Education and play football while there. His ultimate plan is to play in the National Football League (NFL). According to Khamari, Being a dual enrolled scholar can be challenging, but I know that if I can be successful in this program there is no limit to what I can achieve. WCCS 28
