Aviation-Based Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Thank you for your interest in the BIS degree at SUU. The following tutorial will help you understand what the BIS is, the application process, and how students can use the BIS to earn a 4-year degree while also earning the AAS in Aviation.
WHAT IS THE BIS? The BIS is a four-year degree program that is essentially a design-your-own major. Students are required to complete the following: 1. General Education program (http://goo.gl/ezjljd) 2. EDGE program (http://goo.gl/hp1dwt) 3. BIS major courses minimum credits upper-division credits (numbered )
The BIS major requires students to integrate two or more disciplines into a customized program of study. There is a common core of 3 courses (totaling 8 credits): UNIV 1020 Introduction to Interdisciplinary Studies (2 cr.) UNIV 4010 Contemporary Issues (3 cr.) UNIV 4020 Interdisciplinary Seminar (3 cr.) BIS majors must complete a minimum of 50 credits in the program, including the above 8 credits. The other 42 credits will be drawn from various SUU courses in consultation with the BIS Program Director. For those students who wish to earn an AAS in Aviation in addition to the BIS degree, the BIS major MUST include ALL of the PILT courses within the AAS.
VERY IMPORTANT!! The BIS degree is about the integration of seemingly unrelated disciplines. All students in the BIS are required to complete a capstone research paper or project that tackles a problem from the lenses of each discipline listed in the BIS program of study. The BIS is NOT a way to take only fun courses or lots of classes in different areas of interest. There MUST be an overarching theme to the course choices that lead into an integrated, coherent program of study. If students wish to take PILT courses along with classes in Art and History, for example, they NEED to have a valid argument on how all three disciplines/areas come together and will work in a capstone paper/project.
THE APPLICATION PROCESS Students MUST be admitted to the BIS program before they can declare it as their major. To apply for admittance into the BIS major, students will need to fill out an application. This is a DIFFERENT application than what is needed to be admitted into SUU. The application can be found here:
THIS IS THE TOP OF THE FIRST PAGE Put current mailing address. If you don t have one, you may leave it blank. 3 Your BIS application CANNOT be processed until you have been fully admitted into SUU as a 4-year degree-seeking student. 2 If you don t have a GPA from any previous college coursework, leave blank or put N/A 4 We must know if you will be using VA benefits in order to keep track of our numbers.
THIS IS THE BOTTOM OF THE FIRST PAGE 1 Be sure to explain WHY you want to get a 4-year degree. There is no need to write a novel, but a onesentence answer will NOT be sufficient. 2 On the second page, you will list your proposed plan of study (e.g., the courses you will take while a student at SUU). Be sure to tie what you ll be taking in addition to the PILT courses to answer this question. EXAMPLE: I wish to work in mountain rescue operations, so the Geography and Outdoor Recreation courses will aid me in understanding the environment and how to adapt to it. Again, onesentence answers will NOT be sufficient.
THIS IS THE SECOND PAGE This is the 8-credit BIS Common Core. DO NOT CHANGE this part of the list. List your proposed program of study here. Make sure to include ALL PILT courses, even if you ve already completed them at another institution. DO NOT include General Education courses, EDGE courses, etc. For the rest, you will need to identify at least 24 credits of upper-division courses (numbered ). Sample plans have been developed using Piloting and Management; Piloting, Communication, and Marketing; and Piloting, Natural Resources, Outdoor Recreation, and Hotel, Resort, and Hospitality Management. SAMPLE PLANS ARE AVAILABLE HERE: If you use a sample plan and are not able to copy & paste into the application, simply write the name of the plan under BIS EMPHASIS COURSES. You are welcome to use a sample plan in its entirety, or tweak as needed. If you tweak or create your own program, you MUST contact the Interim BIS Program Director at before you submit a final application.
THIS IS THE THIRD PAGE 1 1 You MUST sign and date the application in order for it to be considered for approval. You may scan and the signed page to with the rest of the application, or fax it to (435) If you scan, please send the file in one of the following formats: PDF, JPG, or GIF.
FINAL APPLICATION NOTES Once the application has been received and reviewed, the BIS Director will sign and date the application for final approval. The approved application will be scanned and ed back to you, as well as sent to Ryan Ferree and the Registrar s Office. The Registrar will officially change your major and input your program of study into DegreeWorks, which serves as the audit Ryan uses for VA funding.
YOUR FOUR YEARS AT SUU As with other 4-year degrees, students must complete a minimum of 120 credits, including 40 upperdivision credits (courses numbered ). The AAS in Aviation is 70 credits. That leaves students with at least an additional 50 credits to complete.
The AAS in Aviation requires 21 credits of General Education courses: ENGL 1010 or 2010 (3 cr.) MATH 1030 or higher (4 cr.) CSIS 1000 (3 cr.) LM 1010 (1 cr.) American Institutions (3 cr.) Humanities (3 cr.) Physical Science lecture/lab (4 cr.)
To complete the BIS, students will also need to complete the rest of the General Education requirements (additional 9-12 credits): ENGL 2010 (if not completed in the AAS) (3 cr.) Fine Arts (3 cr.) Social & Behavioral Science (3 cr.) Life Science (3 cr.) Students MUST also complete the EDGE program (3 cr.) if earning a 4-year degree.
Students will also need to complete a minimum of 32 credits of upper-division in order to reach the minimum amount of 40. NOTE: Students will automatically receive 2 credits of upper-division from the EDGE Program, as well as 6 from the BIS Common Core.
Those who complete both the AAS and the BIS will graduate with more than 120 total credits. The breakdown: AAS General Education 21 credits AAS PILT courses + 49 credits BIS General Education credits EDGE Program + 3 credits BIS Common Core + 8 credits Upper-division + 32 credits TOTAL credits
Students with NO previous transfer work will use their first two years at SUU to complete the AAS in Aviation, then transition to the BIS courses. Students who have a few credits, or credits that only transfer in as electives (such as military service), will generally follow the same pattern.
Students who have earned a general associate of arts or science degree may not have any General Education courses to complete, but will complete the EDGE. It is imperative for them to start on the BIS courses at the same time as the PILT courses if they wish to be full-time students.
Students who have earned a bachelor s degree from an accredited institution will not have any General Education or EDGE courses to complete. It is also imperative for them to start on the BIS courses at the same time as the PILT courses if they wish to be full-time students. Students who have earned a bachelor s degree will not be able to use any of their previous coursework toward the new BIS degree. However, they will only need to complete 30 credits of upper-division, as opposed to 40.
ACADEMIC ADVISING Students who do both the AAS and the BIS will have two advisors: Aviation AAS Melanee Mariner, BU 303 BIS Katya Konkle, ST 205 Please make sure you are speaking to the appropriate advisor for your questions. Melanee may not be able to help with the BIS courses, and Katya may not be able to help with the PILT courses.
YOUR NEXT STEPS 1. Finalize your SUU application. For questions on your status, call Enrollment Services at (435) Pay or defer the $100 Commitment Fee. This will allow you to register for courses. You CANNOT register without paying/deferring this fee. 3. Work with Melanee Mariner to determine what PILT and/or General Education courses you will be able to start in. 4. Fill out and submit the BIS application. 5. Once accepted, work with Katya Konkle on registering for any additional courses needed in order to be a fulltime student (if desired).
QUESTIONS? CONCERNS? If you have any questions, concerns, or issues that you would like to discuss before submitting your BIS application, please contact Katya Konkle at is the BEST way to get a hold of her at this time.
