? Electrical network healthcheck Many customers in the UK are unaware of the condition of the electrical systems in their facilities. Power demand is increasing and becoming more important and this is putting more strain on these systems to perform without failure. An electrical health check from Schneider Electric helps you understand the condition of the network and identifies any potential problems now and in the future. It can identify: Electrical equipment obsolescence Potential failures of equipment Incorrect device application Wrong protection settings applied on equipment Confirmation of the single line diagram on site Power supply problems (voltages dips, harmonics etc) by optional monitoring survey Why do you need it? This service helps you improve the reliability of the electrical system and comply with current legislation. The report produced can help you to develop business plans for future upgrades or changes to the electrical systems on site, providing a true asset register of the equipment and servicing requirements and giving accurate up to date drawings for the system. The review is undertaken by experienced Power System Consultants who are familiar with manufacturers equipment from 33kV to final distribution equipment. 4
Electrical network design The correct design and selection of equipment and protective devices is critical to the reliability and longevity of your electrical network. Our design team of qualified engineers understands the requirements of the electrical loads in your facility. They will ensure the correct equipment is selected according to customer and system requirements. Our experienced engineers have been designing such systems for many years and are fully conversant with all the relevant standards including 17th Edition Wiring Regulations, Earthing Standards and IEC 909 fault level calculations. Our offer is suitable for new and existing installations which require either a brand new design or an upgrade/reconfiguration to meet new demands. Electrical network design can include the following elements: A detailed review of your existing design and installation An optional load flow analysis to determine the exact status of the power system Proposition of a number of possible designs Development of design specifications and list of selected equipment Cabling and earthing system design Network automation design Protection system design A written report detailing the following: Overview of the network design Design calculations to support the design Review of options available Selection and specification of equipment 5
Protection studies Incorrect protection settings can result in spurious tripping during normal load conditions or failure to trip during a fault. Inadequate discrimination can result in unnecessary disconnection of supply to loads. Optimising protection settings We identify optimum protection settings to ensure that your personnel and electrical network are properly protected and supply availability is maximised. A protection co-ordination study: Can either be based on electrical network data provided by the client or involve a site visit to collect data from existing devices Involves calculation of optimum protection device settings Is carried out using a proprietary power systems analysis software package (SKM Powertools for Windows) On completion of the protection co-ordination study you will receive a report containing: A single line drawing showing the electrical network model A summary of the relevant data on which the study is based Commentary about how settings were determined and any issues arising Protection device setting tables Protection device time-current characteristics Recommended improvement actions 6

Work with Schneider Electric and you will have access to a wealth of skills and experience. Here is a selection of the many diverse projects where our Power Consultancy team has provided its skills and expertise: Assessing Defence assets with PriDE Schneider Electric was appointed by PriDE, a joint venture between Interserve Defence Limited and Southern Electric Contracting, to assess key electrical assets of Defence Estate properties across the South East of England. The primary objective of PriDE was to evaluate the quantity and condition of the assets in its region, so that a fair assessment could be made of the costs involved over the contract period. Solution: For assistance with this enormous task, PriDE sought support from organisations with proven experience and specialist skills. In the case of the major electrical equipment, Schneider Electric was selected on the basis of its previous successful involvement with all three of the major stakeholders Defence Estates, Interserve Defence and Southern Electric Contracting. Schneider Electric s major involvement is with high voltage switchgear, transformers and primary low-voltage equipment. To ensure expeditious handling of the work, Schneider Electric embedded an engineer with Interserve Defence for 15 months. Marcus Charter, Power Consultant at Schneider Electric, said, Over this period, Schneider Electric provided positive impartial advice on switchgear management for each site audited, as well as providing practical support not only for switchgear supplied by Schneider Electric, but for all switchgear on the site, irrespective of manufacturer. Working with the condition assessment team from Interserve Defence, Schneider Electric also used its expertise and experience to enhance the methods of reporting to Defence Estates. These enhancements have now been adopted for other specialist assessment services. Power Consultancy Audit for major International Airport This major UK international Airport flies to over 220 destinations around the world with over 262,000 aircraft movements every year. The airport owners knew that their electrical network needed to be reviewed and enhanced and Schneider Electric was chosen to supply a major audit of the electrical network. A big part of these asset stewardship activities is to recognise the quantity and condition of all low voltage switchgear under the airport s control. As well as asset recognition and conditional reporting, recommendations were made in an effort to maximise the investment made in the switchgear installed base by the airport, which included a consultative approach to maintenance and modernisation activities. Schneider s Power Consultants also advised on new upgrades and maintenance requirements, providing AutoCAD-produced single line diagrams for each piece of switchgear audited. These drawings were cross-referenced to ensure a network picture was established, which totalled approximately 380 drawings. Minimising unexpected events such as power outages at a large commercial airport is of the utmost importance and having information to suitably target required modernisation, maintenance or replacement activities promotes security of supply. The results of the survey work helped the engineering team to channel the available budget in a measured way to the appropriately identified equipment. The work performed by Schneider Electric has provided the PriDE group members with accurate, detailed and dependable information about the assets they control. This is allowing them to work with Defence Estates on a truly equitable basis, as the costs and labour involved in the contract can now be properly quantified. Steve Tucker, Head of Estate Strategy at PriDE 9
Providing a holistic network review for a major UK Hospital A major NHS Trust in the North of the UK has been providing healthcare into the local community for the past 250 years. The trust required a comprehensive review of its plant reliability and operation. One of the main obstacles which needed to be overcome was that, due to the age of the building and the original installation, equipment often proved difficult to locate and cables had to be traced through ducts, basements and walls. Our work in other markets includes: Provision of design advice and specification for several wind farm projects which included, 33kV switchgear and protection system, automatic reclosing schemes and interfacing to SCADA. Systems compatibility review and protection discrimination studies for numerous large data centres. Additionally, leading on a new-build data centre project that included Network reliability studies, HV and LV switchgear, transformers and interfacing to 90 standby generators. A comprehensive electrical review was undertaken which enabled a detailed modelling of the site network using Schneider Electric s PCMD PC-based software tool. Using a scientific and systematic approach, experts were available on site to adapt the performance of the electrical installation to meet specific operational needs. The result is a set of recommendations and a communication tool was produced to improve reliability, efficiency, maintenance and management of the electrical installation and associated processes. 10
