Market Overview
Global water usage and sector Municipal & Urban 8% value Agriculture $9.5Bn (2%) Energy & Industry $23Bn (6%) Energy & Industry 22% Agriculture 70% Municipal & Urban $368Bn (92%) Global Water Usage Global Water Market
Global freshwater withdrawals
US abstraction rates and usage by sector
US abstraction rates for irrigation and source breakdown
Global irrigation Currently there are 311 million ha in the world Irrigated, with the largest surfaces irrigated found in India (39 mil ha), China (19 mil ha), US (17 mil ha). Irrigation can increase crop yields by 2-4 times, compared to rainfed agriculture. Currently irrigated lands provide 40% of the world's food from 20% of all agricultural lands Affordable private irrigation systems made possible by cheaper pumping and irrigation pipelines, as well as energy subsidies implemented by state authorities, incurred a shift from large public irrigation schemes to local private irrigation systems, but raises concerns over the groundwater depletion rates in countries such as India and China
Comparison between global and Israel s irrigation practices Irrigation technique % of usage worldwide % of usage in Israel Flood irrigation 79% 0% Drip irrigation 5% 75% Mechanized Irrigation & Sprinklers 16% 25% Although Israel is reusing most of its reclaimed water in agriculture, this is a practice that is coming under scrutiny in recent years. Studies have shown that the effluents from wastewater treatment plants contain endocrine disruptors, pharmaceuticals and micro pollutants. In reusing the water these are up-taken by plants, which end up being consumed by the human population.
Phosphorus reserves a ticking time bomb Opinions vary as to the timing for Peak Phosphorus, with estimates of between 50 and 200 years, however at the current rate of extraction, today s phosphorus mines will be exhausted by the end of the 21st Century. Brazil 1% Israel 1% Tunisia Russia 1% 2% China 4% Jordan 6% South Africa 9% USA 11% Other Countries 8% Morocco & Western Sahara 57%
Phosphorus Recovery From Wastewater EU 27 imports 3,400,000 tonnes of P 2 O 5 /yr [100% of Total Imported P 2 O 5 ] 66% to agriculture, industry, etc. 48% is discharged in the effluent* Approx. 1,145,000 tonnes P 2 O 5/ year goes into the EU 27 wastewater [34% of Total Imported P 2 O 5 ] Approx. 595,000 tonnes P 2 O 5 /year goes into biosolids (sludge) [18% of Total Imported P 2 O 5 ] 52% 34% **in absence of P recovery 63% is landfilled or incinerated [7% of Total Imported P 2 O 5 ] Approx. 220,000 tonnes P2O5/year gets recycled to farmland in biosolids 37%

Value Chain Shift Towards Technology Providers The move towards higher tech systems is: transferring value away from the consulting engineering community to the water technology suppliers. This shift in value in the industry is: enabling more complex, and more efficient solutions to be deployed. It transfers more revenue to the technology sector which in turn is trickling down into more venture capital investment, R&D and water technology start-ups.
Water and agriculture in the circular economy
Barriers Farmers have low purchasing power when it comes to water saving technologies and practices Reusing treated effluents and stabilized sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plants can be a capital and operational intensive measure from a cost perspective in open agriculture Human behaviour is very difficult to change.
Sustainable development Google Trends July December July December July December July December
Opportunities Water usage monitoring tools for small farmers. Shifting subsidies from energy and conventional irrigation technologies to smart solutions for precision agriculture and incentivising efficient energy and water use. Clear regulations for recovered phosphorus use in agriculture and incentive for fertilizer manufacturers to include it in the product offering
