3 CourseSyllabus CourseSyllabus AustralianEnvironment,WildlifeandConservation CourseCode:BEES0010 TheEducationAbroadNetwork,inconjunctionwiththeUniversityofNewSouthWales, presents a practical and theoretical introduction to Australian Environment, Wildlife andconservation. From its rainforests, coastlines and coral reefs to its arid interior, Australia offers a diverse range of natural and cultural landscapes and ecosystems to explore. Evolving from origins in ancient Gondwana and millions of years of geographic isolation, Australiaboastsgeographicalandnaturalfeaturesfoundnowhereelseintheworld. Thisprogramprovidesauniqueopportunitytoconsiderhumanimpactsonthenatural environment, and measures to address these impacts, focusing particularly on protected conservation areas. Australia provides a valuable and unique case study in this regard. The course is contextualised within the global ecological crisis and considers the development of environmental values and awareness and describes environmental controversies and how they are addressed. In consideration of these issues, Australia s unique flora and fauna are examined and the various climatically variedregionsvisitedarehighlightedthroughoutthecourse. Theprogramoutlinesandexposesstudentstothechallengesinmanagingnaturaland cultural heritage in the 21st century. There is a strong emphasis on Aboriginal perspectivesoftheaustralianlandscapeanditsimportancetothisancientculture.the programwillfamiliariseparticipantswiththespiritualandecologicaltiesofaboriginal culture with the landscape and how this is incorporated in management of national parks. Thiscourseisanintroductorylevelsciencecourse,whichisalsorelevantforbroader environmental and cultural studies programs. It assumes no, or very little previous tertiary_levelbiologicalscience,however,biologystudentswouldhavetheopportunity to expand their knowledge, particularly in practical application of biological science, andinenvironmentalmanagement.carehasbeentakentosecureexperiencedguides and speakers for the delivery of this course to ensure a first_class educational and culturalexperience. Goodfellow,Denise.(1993)Fauna(of(Kakadu(and(the(Top(End,ColemansPrinting CourseInformation Location The Australian Environment, Wildlife and Conservation program is one of six programsthatmakeuptheunswstudyabroadsummerschoolin2014.eachprogram hasapproximately20_30participantsandalltravelasimilaritinerarywithinaustralia, withacourse_specificfieldtripinweekone,threeandfive.generally,allgroupswillbe staying at the same destination at approximately the same time; however, programs willbreakupintotheirindividualgroupsforclassesandfieldexcursions. TheprogramcommencesinByronBaywherewater,sand,andsuncollide.Laidback ByronBayprovidesafantasticintroductiontolaidbackAustraliawhereyou llbecome familiarwithyourcoursematerial,instructorsandfellowstudents.mixinanincluded kayaktripwithdolphins(andmaybewhales)andoptionalactivitieslikesnorkellingor horsebackridingandyou llbepinchingyourself. Just up the road is the city of Brisbane, Australia s third largest city. With a relaxed lifestyleandsubtropicalclimate,you llenjoydiggingintothecity slivemusicsceneand vibrantneighborhoods. Then onward to Darwin, at the Top End of Australia, including a five_day camping expedition to the World Heritage_listed Kakadu National Park to experience its spectacularsceneryanditsdistinctiveplantsandanimals. From Darwin, the program journeys to the Blue Mountains, Australia s most visited WorldHeritage_listedNationalPark.Threedayswillbespentexploringtheancientand dramatic landforms of the region.
