3 SULEMAN DAWOOD SCHOOL OF BUSINESS INSPIRING BUSINESS EXCELLENCE The Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB) is the oldest school at LUMS, established in The school introduced the case method of teaching, keeping in mind the need for a challenging and relevant curriculum. SDSB also carries out rigorous economic and management research through its research centres such as the Strategic Sectors Research Centre (SSRC), Social Enterprise Development Centre (SEDC) and the Case Research Centre (CRC). SDSB maintains a close relationship with the business world, which acts as a source of advice and information. This interaction not only helps to keep the curriculum relevant to the needs of business organisations, but also ensures that the students are exposed to the dynamics of the corporate world. Business leaders actively interact with both faculty and students through frequent visits, seminars and as guest speakers, enriching the classroom experience with their perspectives. Everybody always wanted to try new things and learn from each other. My two years at LUMS were memorable. My classmates came from all around Pakistan from different fields and with varying experiences and this contributed to the class discussions, which were the most interesting and enjoyable part of academics. Overall it was an amazing experience that built business knowledge, helped shape positive behaviour to be ready for practical pressures of life and most importantly provided a forum to become part of a great community. Additionally, industry linkages are strengthened by the involvement of faculty in teaching and training at the Rausing Executive Development Centre (REDC), which caters to more than 2,000 senior executives and managers annually. SDSB aims to provide for the varying educational needs of a culturally diverse and geographically dispersed student body with the goal of preparing students academically, personally and professionally for successful careers and to give them opportunities to make a difference. That s the great thing about the case study method; you act as the owner of the company and by solving the case study issues you learn to successfully handle and manage large corporations. By debating the case study in the class you see the pros and cons of your decisions. The intense debates, the group projects, the extreme competition with your classmates, the late night snacks, the early morning crash studies before the case, the friendly yet demanding faculty, a world class campus, Harvard University taught case studies, all add to the LUMS experience! 3

4 ABOUT THE PROGRAMME MBA programme at LUMS exposes students to academic rigor and high practical relevance. SDSB MBA links theory to practice, bringing the industrial experience to the classroom. The students are exposed to well-planned elements such as projects, internships and exchange programmes to realise their own potential. SUMMER ORIENTATION PROGRAMME (SOP) The SOP brings together students from diverse academic backgrounds and prepares them to deal with the challenges of the rigorous MBA programme. The SOP is offered in August, prior to the official commencement of classes. It aims at easing the transitional stage of students into the regular MBA by providing fundamental skill enhancement modules in communication, business mathematics, accounting, computer applications and statistics, thus bringing all the students from different backgrounds to one level. THE MBA CURRICULUM The SDSB MBA is a two-year programme based on a series of core and elective courses. Year I In year I, all students are expected to complete eleven core courses that are designed to give concepts that provide the backbone of general management education. 5 SUMMER INTERNSHIP Between the first and the second year of the MBA programme, students must undertake a project based summer internship of at least six weeks. The mandatory internship helps students to apply classroom knowledge to a practical environment, the amalgamation adding further to the learning experience.through the internship, students gain valuable management experience early on in their careers and identify their long term career goals. Internship placements are aided by the Placement Office at SDSB. THE MBA PROJECT The project is an excellent application of what is learnt throughout the programme. It is a challenging assignment, combining decision making ability, teamwork, working under pressure and an integrated approach towards management. 8 ADMISSION ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES Admission to the MBA Programme is based entirely on merit. Applicants are assessed on the following factors: Minimum of sixteen years of education leading to a Master s or Bachelor s* degree from a university recognised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan Performance in the admission test (LMAT or GMAT) Work experience (preferred but not compulsory) Two letters of recommendation Interview performance *Candidates holding only a Bachelor s degree of less than four years duration will be required to produce an equivalence certificate of completion of 16 years of education issued by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan. The Admissions Office will review applications to ensure requirements are being met. Shortlisted candidates will be called in for an interview, after which the final decision will be made. Work Experience Preference is given to applicants with prior work experience. Evaluation is based on the quantity and quality of the full-time work experience and candidates are encouraged to acquire work experience of one or two years before applying to the LUMS MBA Programme. This requirement, however, is not mandatory. Interview Performance A merit ranking for interview shortlisting is established on academic performance, work experience (if any) and admission test score of the candidates. 9 FINANCE YOUR FUTURE MCB Student Personal Loan (SPL) Facility As a student of the MBA programme, you are entitled to have an MBA Loan from MCB Bank. The commercial loan facility is pivotal for students who are currently financially unable to afford the cost of tuition and living facilities. This facility is one of the first of its kind in Pakistan. Key features of the loan are: A maximum of 80% of the tuition, registration, admission and hostel fees is covered. However loans will be awarded based on student need as determined by MCB. Refundable security is not eligible for loans. Maximum two year loan amount is PKR 1.0 million disbursed in tranches before the beginning of each term. Markup will be accrued at 6 months KIBOR+ 2%. KIBOR will be reset on six monthly basis. The 2% spread over KIBOR will remain unchanged over the tenure of the loan. Repayment of principal and accrued mark up will begin six months after graduation, will be on monthly basis and will be completed over a maximum period of six years from the date of graduation. The monthly amount paid by the student will consist of the loan repayment (amortisation basis) plus a portion of the markup accrued before commencement of repayment. There is no prepayment penalty charged by MCB on early settlement of the loan. Student will be asked to provide a guarantor in the form of a parent/guardian to support the application. Student will not be allowed to apply for any fresh financing from any institution without MCB s consent until repayment of this loan is done. The entire outstanding amount will have to be repaid on immediate basis if the student exits the programme or is asked to leave by LUMS. In case of approval of loan, disbursement will be made directly to LUMS on account of the student. MCB and LUMS reserve the right to share details of outstanding amount of the student Loan with the student s employer. All loans are subject to the bank s internal approvals and MCB reserves the right to approve/disapprove a loan based on its internal assessment. In case a loan is not approved, the student will be required to provide the total fees and expenses of the programme him or herself. LUMS does not provide interest free loans to MBA students. External Scholarship Funding opportunities are available to students as per assessed need and criterion specified by the donors.
