1. Introduction PCKeeper test A holistic approach to platform performance benchmarking was used. These performance tests were made on specific machines available in the current market. Tests were conducted in order to record the resulting performance of the machines. 3
2. Test environment All the machines the tests were carried out on are compliant with the ECMA-383 standards: Supply Voltage: 230 ± 1% Volts AC, 50 Hz ± 1% (Europe); Temperature: 23 ± 5 degrees Celsius; Relative humidity: 10% to 80%; Ambient light: 250 ± 50 Lux. Tests were conducted in PCKeeper Lab in conditions described in ECMA-383. The benchmarking was held in accordance with all the industry standards by Microsoft Certified Professionals. Tests were carried out on laptop and desktop PCs. All machines have been tested for 4 weeks in a row. Windows 8.1 operating system was used for testing. The Power Plan has been set to Balanced. All tests were performed according to Microsoft Developer Central Hardware guidelines: All machines have been tested for 4 weeks in a row; Windows Update successfully ran on all machines 24 hours prior to testing; Windows Update was then disabled; Windows 8 new Automatic Maintenance feature was first executed and then disabled; We ran each benchmark three times and used the arithmetic average of results; All portable machines were fully charged to 100% and ran autonomously up until they were down to 1%. 4
3. Test description We used Windows Performance Toolkit in order to recreate an average user load of a machine and measure its performance; this package features performance monitoring tools that produce in-depth performance profiles of Windows operating systems and applications. Several other tools were used also. The Windows Performance Toolkit consists of two independent tools: Windows Performance Recorder (WPR) and Windows Performance Analyzer (WPA). Windows Performance Recorder (WPR) is a powerful recording tool that creates Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) helping record machine performance. Windows Performance Analyzer (WPA) Issues dialogue allows users explore the root cause of any issues identified during the analysis of test machines performance. The following test results were performed in a highly controlled environment, in accordance with industry standards, and with professional measurement software which was previously only used by Microsoft engineers (Windows Performance Toolkit was an internal Microsoft tool to measure OS performance). The tests were done by PCKeeper Microsoft Certified professionals. However, the testers cannot guarantee that these performance tests can be reproduced on other machines as each benchmarking session will yield slightly different results. These results comprise a strong and accurate representation of systems under high load and the influence of an optimization product on solving the performance problems. Overall results are based on High load and After fix tests. 5
3. Test description Tests go under categories: Boot time and Shutdown ( Boot Performance and Shutdown Duration ) results were measured via Windows Performance Toolkit. Toolkit measures the whole system performance as well as the responsiveness of software and has minimal impact on battery life, startup performance, and shutdown time. It also measures the PC shutdown duration down to a millisecond. File copy and Photo Editing ( File Handling and Photo Handling ) results were measured via Windows Performance Toolkit. Toolkit measures the time it takes to complete user tasks such as viewing, searching and manipulating a set of photos as well as duration of common file operations such as copy, move, delete and zip. Memory (RAM) and Background Processes were measured through Task Manager. Running benchmarks on a PC enables users to evaluate performance, identify potential bottlenecks, and choose effective system upgrades. Unfortunately, many users imagine that system performance is simply a matter of CPU frequency or memory capacity, which leads them to think that investing in a faster CPU or more memory will automatically and immediately yield noticeable performance improvements. In reality, however, that is not always the case. Disk Cleaning Performance Analysis was performed through Local Disk Properties feature. The size of a hard drive doesn t affect how fast the processor runs or how quickly computer is able to access the Internet. However, the size the hard drive really does influence the overall computer performance. 6
4. Test Machines 4.1. Specifications Benchmarks were performed on a desktop PC and on a laptop. Test machines specifications Desktop PC characteristics: Pentium(R) Dual Core CPU 3.00GHz, 8.00 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD, Windows 8.1 Enterprise Laptop characteristics: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-5200u 2.20GHz, 8.00 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD, Windows 8.1 Enterprise Tests were performed in 3 categories: Clean absolutely clean Microsoft machines without any installed software High Load average normal user environment with installed software After Fix each machine was optimized via PCKeeper Live, performance data was recorded afterwards Each machine came with 200+ programs installed in order to evaluate the system performance and the effects of PCKeeper Live optimization on it. Although high, this number of applications is regular both for beginners and IT professionals. PCKeeper Microsoft Certified specialists have selected these applications based on the list of 200+ most popular programs on Download.com (CNET). They were also installed via the popular Ninite installer. This tool automatically installs over 50 popular applications in various categories. The programs were installed using their Standard installation options, which in many cases also installed additional toolbars or downloads; all 3rd party applications bundled with the software were unchecked for installation. 7
4. Test Machines 4.1. Specifications Testing conditions: All the tests were carried out in accordance with Microsoft guidelines All the programs were initialized several times System was rebooted 15 times over 3 days prior to testing PCKeeper Microsoft specialists installed software for benchmarking and the appropriate tools to determine the test results An image of the clean install was taken using Microsoft s built-in recimg utility. The Windows 8.1 Refresh feature could be used to revert the system to its clean state. All the test machines in their untouched condition are referred to as Clean. Reasons for low system performance: Services Background processes Startup items Lack of disk space Drivers (some software products install new drivers over the existing ones) Lack of memory Lack of system resources With each program installed, the system can become slower. With these benchmarks, a variety of applications was installed in order to see how it can affect the performance. All of the causes above may lead to drastic changes in normal PC system functioning. That s why it is important to have good protection for system while using several programs. 8
5. Boot & Shutdown Results Tests were performed in 3 categories: Clean High Load After Fix Initially, the machines were in a completely clean and untouched condition, except for the pre-installed Microsoft default applications. Then 200+ applications were installed. Finally, PCKeeper Live was installed and launched on all the machines. Full results on every machine under every state (Clean, High Load and After Fix) were recorded. After PCKeeper Live was initialized, the following performance-optimizing steps were taken on each machine: Cleaning: Toolbars removal Spyware / Malware / Adware removal Junk and temporary files clean-up Unwanted software leftovers removal Thumbnails clean-up Performance: Boot time reduced System problems eliminated Registry problems corrected Updates checked Windows processes optimized Security: Suspicious software identified Firewall configured Privacy-protective measures taken Anti-Theft measures taken Testers measured the Boot Performance & Shutdown Duration using Windows Performance Toolkit. Boot time and shutdown duration are measured in milliseconds. Starting and shutting down the system is a valid indicator of how fast the PC is capable of ending processes and services. Long startup and shutdown times are a sign of bad system performance. 9 Windows Performance Toolkit tracks the entire boot procedure from UEFI/BIOS boot to the last service loaded and gives an accurate measurement of its duration.

7. Memory & Background Processes Result Memory (Random Access Memory) is crucial for any user PC. It plays a very important role in how quickly your computer processes commands. In fact, in some ways RAM is even more important than processor speed. Background processes is the place an active program is running, but not visible to the user (i.e. in the background). Typical tasks for these processes include, system monitoring, scheduling and user notification. Tests results were measured in Microsoft Task Manager. 19
