7 Medicare Supplement Overview Medicare is health insurance for: People 65 or older People under 65 with certain disabilities People of any age with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant) Open Enrollment Period A one-time-only, 6-month period when federal law allows an individual to buy any Medigap policy they want that s sold in their state. Starts in the first month that they re covered under Medicare Part B, and are 65 or older. During this period, they can t be denied a Medigap policy or charged more due to past or present health problems. Some states may have additional Open Enrollment rights under state law. 8 Medicare Supplement Overview Med Supp Plans Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) is private health insurance that helps supplement Original Medicare. This means it helps pay some of the health care costs that Original Medicare doesn t cover (like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles). These are gaps in Medicare coverage.
