8 Conference Committee JESSICA HEW (Conference Co-Chair) is Counsel at Burr & Forman, LLP and handles a wide range of civil and commercial litigation, as well as transactional and legal compliance matters, alternative dispute resolution, and appeals. She counsels client companies in best practices to avoid and plan for litigation, risk management, and daily operations. She directs staffing and supervision of case teams for case management, including strategic plan formation, analysis and implementation. She is experienced with electronically stored information and document management systems. She lectures, presents and authors on various topics to diverse audiences. Jessica is active in numerous professional, community and charitable organizations with leadership positions. She received her Bachelor s degree in Business Administration from Loyola University of the South, and her J.D. from Tulane University School of Law. Jessica was a Founding Member of the Greater Orlando Asian American Bar Association" and served as the President. KIM NGUYEN (Conference Co-Chair) is Corporate Counsel at Marriott Vacations Worldwide Corporation, which is headquartered in Orlando. Kim's responsibilities include handling litigation, compliance, arbitration, discovery, ediscovery, and contract issues. Prior to joining MVW, Kim was Senior Associate at the Orlando firm of Lowndes, Drosdick, Doster, Kantor & Reed, P.A. where she gained experience in Creditors' Rights & Bankruptcy, commercial litigation, and real estate transactions. She was a Founding Member of the Greater Orlando Asian American Bar Association and served as the President. Kim also currently is the President-Elect of the National Conference of Vietnamese American Attorneys. CHRISTINE BERK is an attorney with Voight Attorneys at Law. She practices in real estate law, business/corporate matters, contracts, employment law, and general civil litigation. Born in Guam and raised in California, Christine attended California State University, Fresno as a Rodman Scholar. She earned her law degree from Florida Coastal School of Law where she earned Book Awards in several areas. Christine has served as a court advocate for domestic violence victims in Duval County and as a Guardian ad Litem for children in Osceola County. She is a member of the American Bar Association and also serves on the Board of Directors of the Greater Orlando Asian American Bar Association as Membership Committee Chair. VANESSA A. BRAGA received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees from Florida State University, and her J.D. from Stetson University College of Law. She has worked as an In-House Counsel Intern for HSN. After graduating with her Juris Doctor, Mrs. Braga relocated to Orlando. She is an Associate Attorney with Burruezo & Burruezo, PLLC, focusing on labor & employment matters. Vanessa is an active member of the Central Florida Diversity Mentoring Picnic committee and the Greater Orlando Asian American Bar Association. MICHELLE KU is an Assistant General Counsel for Student Legal Services at the University of Central Florida (UCF). She received her Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University and her J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. She has devoted most of her career to working in the public interest. Prior to joining UCF, Michelle worked as a senior attorney for a legal services program representing indigent clients. She also taught and served as Department Chair of a paralegal studies program. Michelle is very active in voluntary bar and civic activities, with a particular focus on diversity issues. She serves on the Florida Supreme Court s Standing Committee on Fairness & Diversity. ANNIE P. KWONG is an associate in the Orlando office of Quintairos, Prieto, Wood & Boyer, P.A., where she focuses her practice in workers compensation defense. Annie previously worked as a project attorney for a global firm providing risk management analysis on mortgaged backed securities, and assessed risk in large scale litigation cases. Following law school, she moved to Guangzhou, China where she worked as a legal consultant for an international law firm. She worked in the areas of litigation and immigration, which included assisting with appeals to U.S. Federal Court. Annie received her J.D. from Florida Coastal School of Law and her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Florida with a major in criminology. In law school, she served as a member of the Moot Court Honor Board and received the Book Award in Torts. She clerked for a personal injury law firm in Jacksonville and interned at the Orange County Office of the Public Defender, Misdemeanor Division. She is fluent in Cantonese and proficient in Mandarin Chinese. ROBERT Q. LEE is a partner and business lawyer with Foley & Lardner, LLP where his practice focuses on the representation of public, private, and emerging growth companies in corporate and commercial matters, mergers and acquisitions, reorganizations, business start-ups, securities offerings, indentures, bond issues, corporate governance, private equity and mezzanine financing, securitizations, secured transactions, supplier and distribution agreements, technology licensing, servicing agreements, and franchising. Robert has engaged in cross-border transactions and investments particularly relating to Latin America and Asia Pacific regions. Prior to joining Foley, Robert was a partner with an international law firm and previously served as interim in-house counsel and outside corporate counsel for GE Power Systems, GE Capital, GE Access and GE Transportation, and provided support for Siemens corporate and real estate legal divisions. 10 Panelists HONORABLE SCOTT M. BERNSTEIN Judiciary Roundtable 9:00a.m. - 10:15a.m. HONORABLE SCOTT M. BERNSTEIN is currently the Administrative Judge of the Family Division in the 11th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. He received his law degree at the University of Florida College of Law in 1983 where he wrote for the Law Review and graduated with honors. He went into private practice from 1983 to 1998 with a large corporate firm and later in his own firm as sole practitioner, concentrating in commercial litigation and appellate practice. He served as a Traffic Magistrate from 1996 to Elected as a Circuit Judge in 1998, he asked to be assigned to Juvenile Court so he could dedicate his judicial career to the needs of children. He was appointed to coordinate and manage the Unified Family Court Pilot Project for the Miami-Dade County Circuit Court and was appointed by the Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court to the Statewide Commission for Families and Children in the Courts, for which he chaired the Delinquency Subcommittee. After years serving in the criminal, family and civil divisions, he chose to return to the Family Division, where he currently presides. In 2007, the Chief Justice appointed him to chair a statewide Fairness and Diversity Education program for all Florida judges and court employees. He was appointed chair of the Education Committee of the Florida Conference of Circuit Judges. The Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court has also appointed him as chair of the Standing Committee on Fairness and Diversity for the State of Florida. GEORGE CHEN Judiciary Roundtable 9:00a.m. - 10:15a.m. GEORGE CHEN is the President of NAPABA, representing the interests of over 40,000 APA lawyers. He also is a Partner at Bryan Cave LLP, is the leader of the intellectual property practice in the Phoenix office, was a co-chair of the firm-wide Lawyers of Color Affinity Group, and was the chair of the Recruiting Committee for the Phoenix office. He partners with longterm clients to develop, protect, enforce, defend, monetize, and commercialize intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, unfair competition, Internet, cyber squatting, and other related matters. MARIA AGUILA Judiciary Roundtable 9:00a.m. - 10:15a.m. MARIA AGUILA is a General Magistrate presiding over family law cases for the Fourth Circuit in Jacksonville, Florida since October Prior to serving on the bench, she was Director of the Judicial Staff Attorneys Office, managing 14 attorneys and oversight of all draft orders, judgments and memoranda for 50+ judges in three counties. She had her own solo practice in immigration law and international adoptions and headed the Fair Housing Unit at Jacksonville Area Legal Aid. She is a member of the Florida Bar, past President and a founder of the Jacksonville Asian American Bar Association, Chair of the Jacksonville Bar Association Diversity Committee, Program Chair and Past President of the Catholic Lawyers Guild, and a member of the Florida State College (FSC) Paralegal Studies Advisory Committee. 11 Moderator & Panelists HAKSOO STEPHEN LEE Ethics Panel: You re Fired The Ethics of Dealing With Difficult Clients, Opposing Counsel and Co-Counsel 10:20a.m. - 11:35a.m. HAKSOO STEPHEN LEE is a Korean American lawyer and practices in the areas of creditors' rights, civil litigation and business litigation. Stephen s clients include large institutional lenders, high net-worth individuals and non-profits. Stephen graduated from Fordham University in 2003 with a bachelor of arts in philosophy. During his time at Fordham, Stephen worked as a deputy clerk for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Stephen received his Juris Doctor degree in 2009 from the University of Notre Dame Law School. During his time at Notre Dame, Stephen participated in the Intensive Trial Advocacy program developed and taught by the faculty of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy. In addition, Stephen served as a student-attorney licensed by the Indiana State Bar at the Notre Dame Legal Aid Clinic. Stephen was a summer associate at Hwang Mok Park and at electronics maker LG Corporation in Seoul, South Korea. Before starting The Law Offices of H.S. Stephen Lee, PA, Haksoo was a bankruptcy and litigation associate at a nation-wide law firm (Am Law 200) and worked as a law clerk to the Honorable Lewis M. Killian, Jr., United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Northern District of Florida. JASON LIU Moderator Ethics Panel: You re Fired The Ethics of Dealing With Difficult Clients, Opposing Counsel and Co-Counsel 10:20a.m. - 11:35a.m. JASON LIU is an Adjunct Professor teaching Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management at the USF Center for Entrepreneurship. Jason graduated from the University of Miami School of Law with degrees in Juris Doctor and Master of Laws in Taxation, and from the University of South Florida with degrees in Bachelor of Science in Finance and Economics and Master of Business Administration. Liu is licensed to practice law in the State of Florida. Concurrent with his teaching responsibility at USF, Liu is the Managing Partner in charge of finance and legal functions of an international company with annual revenue approaching $30 million. Prior to joining The Bare Board Group, Liu practiced law with a large law firm and concentrated in transactional business law, with an emphasis on corporate transactions and taxation. In his capacity as an outside legal counsel, Liu regularly advised clients on various business-related matters involving structuring mergers, acquisitions, sales, partnerships, and federal, 6 state and international tax. Debbie is experienced in representing policyholders in litigation against carriers from the trial level through appeal, in both state and federal courts. She has considerable experience in assisting clients, mainly general contractors and subcontractors, with complex issues such as additional insured status, contractual indemnity, risk management, and other risk transfers mechanisms. She also reviews and revises construction contracts as to the insurance and indemnity provisions. Her practice includes all aspects and types of insurance recovery, including insurance denials, claim representation, and both first and third party bad faith/extra-contractual claims. Debbie moved from Maryland to Southwest Florida in Just prior to joining Cheffy Passidomo, P.A., she was an equity partner in the law firm of Boyle, Gentile, Leonard and Crockett, P.A. in Fort Myers, Florida. Since 2012, Gary has counseled businesses and individuals in all manners of employment law matters including Discrimination Litigation, Employee Compensation Rights, Non-Compete Agreements, FMLA compliance, Sexual Harassment Litigation, FLSA compliance and more. She is an active member of the OCBA, receiving the Outstanding Service Award in 2005, 2009 and 2011, and the Junior League, amongst other organizations. HWANG is Assistant General Counsel with Verizon Enterprise Solutions (VES), a business unit of Verizon Communications, Inc., a Fortune 15 company. In this capacity, Jin negotiates and drafts agreements with the top largest corporate customers in various industry verticals for their domestic and global high-technology needs and provides day-to-day guidance to her sales, finance, and marketing clients. Prior to VES, Jin was in-house counsel with Verizon Wireless in a variety of roles including handling and supervising litigation, bankruptcy, joint marketing with other business units, and market integrations. Before that, Jin was in-house with France Télécom's North American legal department in Washington, D.C.J in graduated from American University's Washington College of Law, where she was Articles Editor of the Administrative Law Review, which is published quarterly in conjunction with the American Bar Association's Section of Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice and has the highest circulation rate of any student-edited journal. Jin earned her bachelor degree with double majors in Psychology and French Studies with honors from the University of Pennsylvania. SANDRA CHEN SANDRA CHEN currently is the Senior Director, Licensing and Compliance, for Universal Orlando Resort, a subsidiary of Comcast Corporation and has been in the legal department at Universal Orlando for nearly 14 years. Her responsibilities include intellectual property licensing at the Universal Orlando Resort destination; marketing and advertising review; management of the parks privacy, website and mobile accessibility, PCI and FTC compliance issues. She currently sits on the boards for the Universal Orlando Foundation, the Chinese American Association of Central Florida and its Chinese School and the General Board of Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Central Florida. She received her Juris Doctor from Chicago-Kent College of Law and her undergraduate degree from Cornell University. After practicing law for several years, Stephanie chose to focus her career in the areas of government and community relations. She has worked in many areas of law, government and public affairs. She served as Legal Counsel to the Orange County Clerk of Courts and as an associate with a small insurance defense firm. She also served as the Director of Government and Community Relations for Orlando Health, a private not-for-profit hospital system where she was responsible for all local, state and national government relations, and was an integral part of a statewide legislative and public affairs initiative to secure funding for all trauma centers in the state. Stephanie started her firm after serving as the Director of Marketing and Business Development for the Orlando office of Baker Hostetler. In this role she combined her legal experience with her public affairs background to handle all external relations for the Orlando office. Prior to earning her law degree, she was a lobbyist in Washington D.C., where she worked on federal regulatory and congressional issues. Stephanie is an active member of the Central Florida community, serving on numerous boards and has been selected one of the Forty Under 40 executives by the Orlando Business Journal. WILLIAM SIMONITSCH is the Immediate Past President of NA- PABA, and a partner in the Miami office of the global law firm K&L Gates LLP. Bill provides strategic advice to companies and their principals in the resolution of complex commercial and corporate governance disputes through negotiation and, when necessary, litigation and trial. His multi-disciplinary litigation practice includes bringing and defending actions regarding shareholder rights, fiduciary duties, business break-ups, broken contracts, fraud, intellectual property licensing, trademark infringement, deceptive and unfair trade practices, and construction agreements. In addition, he has advocated for secured and unsecured creditors in bankruptcy cases and state insolvency proceedings. Bill received his B.A. and M.A. in International Affairs from Florida State University, and his J.D. from the University of Miami School of Law. Alen represents clients in a wide variety of complex business, employment, and real estate litigation. He also has experience providing general legal advice for small to mid-sized businesses, including formation, employment contracts, non-compete agreements, contracts for the sale/purchase of a business, and commercial lease agreements. Alen concentrates his practice in consumer finance litigation matters. As a member of the consumer financial services team, he regularly represents clients in all aspects of litigation in state and federal courts, including disputes under TCPA, TILA, RESPA, FCRA, ECOA, and FDCPA, as well as a variety of common law claims. Alen is the President- Elect of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of South Florida.
