1 Holacracy App Developer Kit v4.1 Introduction A Holacracy app is a pre-packaged governance proposal that has been designed to work within an organization running holacracy. Holacracy apps allow organizations to distill and share governance proposals to address common organizational issues like talent management (e.g. hiring, firing, compensation), operations (e.g. strategic planning, supply-chain logistics, resource allocation), and organization design (e.g. new regional divisions, mergers and acquisitions, expansion). Please also note that Holacracy apps are only suggested governance proposals and may be modified before or during governance meetings depending on the user s needs. In addition, apps must adhere to the governance process detailed in the Holacracy Constitution Article III. Getting Started The easiest way to understand how to design and develop a holacracy app is to look at an example. The following is a high-level overview of a holacracy app since current apps are also available for download on the Holacracy App Store. Summary provides a brief statement on the app s purpose and how it achieves that purpose Design Notes clarifies specific words or clauses used in the app Adoption Requirements stipulates how the app is intended to be installed Specifies which version of the Constitution the app was designed for Specifies the governance proposal including adding specific roles, purpose, domains, accountabilities, and/or policies

3 3 Design Process First, decide what roles (if any) might be interested in designing a Holacracy app. Whatever role is responsible for holacracy implementation may be a great starting point, since the development of apps could serve as valuable learning. Again, the intention of the Holacracy App Store is to support the community with useful apps and to empower consumers to become app creators. When designing your app, please use the Holacracy App Template provided in the Appendix. After completion, please submit it to apps@holacracyone.com for review, comment, and/or inclusion on the app store. Design Process Map Request project from role accountable for holacracy implementation, and/or take individual action Holacracy App published on Holacracy App Store Please note that this is a temporary process as we are currently working on a peer-to-peer platform that will allow users to submit and rate apps with less centralized control Design app using Holacracy App Template Submit app (or updates to app) to HolacracyOne for review HolacracyOne posts app on app store for public download Initially apps may go through several rounds of edits Adoption Process Once your app has been approved for inclusion on the App Store, anyone can download the file and use it to craft proposals. We are currently working on a way for apps to be automatically downloadable into GlassFrog, but for now we are simply sharing PDF files, which allows users to copy and paste the app into their governance proposals while ensuring the integrity of the original design. When apps become actual governance proposals they are processed through the Integrative Decision-Making (Constitution Section 3.3.4) just like any other proposal. The Holacracy App Template requires the Adoption Requirements section, which stipulates how the app is intended to be installed including the version of the Holacracy Constitution (v3.0, v4.0, etc.) and which domains the app will impact (i.e. This app can be adopted as governance of whatever Circle controls the Domain of "Partner Relationships", as defined in Constitution Section 5.2.5)

4 Given the complexity of some of the apps, users may decide to circulate the proposals in advance of the governance meeting. Be advised that this should not be done to gain consensus, but simply to provide clarity on the proposal so that valid objections can be identified. Design Notes Describe notations used in the design of the app that will help users identify which circle the app should be installed (i.e. References in this app should be replaced to refer to whatever role or sub-circle holds a relevant accountability for defining compensation. Optional [bold clauses] can also be used if the app has two or more design paths and should be specified here (i.e. The optional [bold clauses] enact a structure where each partner can have multiple Advocates; keep or remove these clauses as-desired ). Adoption Requirements Adoption Requirements stipulates how the app is intended to be installed (i.e. This app can be adopted as governance of whatever Circle controls the Domain of Partner Relationships, as defined in Constitution Section ).
