2 How To Pick Up More Opens (and swipes) Have you ever tried to pick up someone you were attracted to? Whether you answer yes or no to that question doesn t matter. What matters is that either way, I can almost 100% guarantee that at least once the thought has run through your head of what should I say to a person like that to get their attention, not sound like a goober, but also do it in a cool way?. It s human psychology. Certain things said in certain ways get people to pay attention and want more. Almost everyday throughout our lives we re competing for the attention of the people around us. Whether it s trying to think of something clever to say at a dinner party, to picking up someone you re attracted to, or getting the attention of your customers so they pay attention to the message you re spreading to the world grabbing peoples attention in a cool way is a HUGELY valuable skill to master. So, one of the easiest places to test and tweak your chops on grabbing attention in cool ways is through your marketing. Every time you send an to someone, they make conscious decisions to pay attention to certain stuff and to delete other stuff before they even open up the . Think about when you bring your mail back from the mailbox every day. What do you do?...

3 What do you do? As the late Gary Halbert put it you sort your mail into the A, B, and C piles whether you realize it or not. The A pile is the stuff you want to get to first. It s the cool stuff the stuff that gets your attention. The B pile is stuff you want to try to get to but it s not all that important (a lot of this stuff ends up in the C pile eventually. The C pile is the trash pile. Thrown away before they ever even give it a chance. You want to avoid this pile at all costs. So, how can you translate that into making you a better marketer? Simple, when you re writing your subject lines ask yourself Is this something that will stop them in their tracks and compel them to open the before they move on? Or is it easy to pass up?. People filter their boxes the same way unconsciously into Awesome stuff I m going to open for sure Stuff I ll keep around and get to someday and stuff I ll delete right away without giving it a second look.

NOTE: These subject lines are ones that we ve personally tested and used in our own online publishing business that performed exceptionally well, ones we ve saved from well known marketers based on how they grabbed us as prospects to open their s, and ones from outside tests ran by our colleagues that we have verified were killer subject lines. Use these as starting points and tweak them from there. As you ll see many of the subject lines have very similar elements. Elements of a great subject line include - Curiosity Make them so curious that they have to open the to find out the rest of the story - Contradiction Contradict something that is normally held to be true - Specificity Specifics help make the subject line more real - Personal Touch Make them feel like the is from a friend not from a business marketing to them - Instant Usability Make them feel there is something for them they can instantly use to get a desired result (free downloads or swipes are great for this) When you combine as many of those elements as you can at least two is best your chances at increasing your open rates start to skyrocket. Now, you probably won t be able to use all of the subject lines below 100% word for word. Instead, find ones that grab you as you re reading through them and see how you can apply the same or similar subject line in your business. Most of the time it s as simple as changing the object of the subject line to fit your message. Also, some of the subject lines aren t too awfully politically correct. If you don t like those ones bag em. BUT, ask yourself why first. Is it because your voice and brand contradict that kind of message? Awesome, bag em.

5 Or, is it because you don t want to offend anyone? If that s the reason, just realize that your job as a marketer is to truly build a loyal following of people who relate to you and like you as a person and brand. If you would normally say those kinds of things in real life, think about sprinkling some of that stuff into your writing. It ll attract the right people and repel the people who maybe aren t the best fit for your company anyhow. Alrighty, now lets dive in!
