2 Program Focus One of the best questions I ever heard about the family and chemical dependency came from an adult daughter of an alcoholic. She asked Let me see if I understand this; my father is an alcoholic and therefore he has alcoholism, which they say is a disease, but what do I have? Who Should Attend? The training will be especially valuable for those working in the areas of: Mental Health Addictions Counseling Marriage and Family Therapy Psychology School Counseling Registered Nursing Courts and Corrections Prevention Employee Assistance Pastoral Counseling Ever since the founding of Al-Anon in the early 1950s, this question has been pondered, debated and researched the focus being the negative impact of addiction on family members, including increased risk of developing alcoholism, particularly among sons; breakdown of family rules and rituals; communication breakdown; domestic violence; emotional and physical abuse and sexual abuse; increased family stress and use of health services; posttraumatic stress disorders including adult emotional problems, anxiety, depression and chemical dependency. The family has become a critical focal point in the treatment of chemical dependency. This focus needs to be expanded beyond assessment of negative outcomes, to include survival techniques and strength to better help those impacted by addiction and for children of all ages from these families. Our conference is designed to address the emergence of strength perspective treatment models and integrative family treatment. Welcome, Robert J. Ackerman, Ph.D. Program Chairperson Claudia Black, Ph.D. Jerry Moe, M.A. Dennis Wholey Fred Hanna, Ph.D. Rev. Leo Booth John Friel, Ph.D. Stephanie Brown, Ph.D. Sharon Wegscheider-Cruse, M.A. Joseph Cruse, M.D. Tian Dayton, Ph.D., T.E.P. C. C. Nuckols, Ph.D. Jane Middelton-Moz, M.S.
