1 By: Deanna O Neil, RHIA, CCS-P GET TO KNOW AHIMA and HIMAH Where to begin. It seems like only yesterday that we were at the annual HIMAH meeting hearing from all are great speakers. Yes would you believe it was three and a half months ago. There is so much going on around us, it makes me feel like I am in a revolving door and not able to get out. But when I think about it, it means there is so much out there that I can or will be learning by getting involved either on the forefront or behind the scenes to better myself or help others. You ask well how do we do that? We need to be constantly aware of what is happening in AHIMA as well as seeing what other state associations are doing. One way for us to find out what is going on, is becoming a user of the AHIMA CoP. All members are allowed to have access to this section. When you have questions on how others might be doing a certain process, go to the CoP and see what others are doing, or just present your question. You will be surprised how many people are inquiring just as you are. Another way to be part of the revolving door is to become a team player with HIMAH as a committee. Other ways to get to know what is going on, is to become part of a committee. Many times we make comment about why things might not have been done, when we could have been part of that team to make it happen so that not only for ourselves but help make it happen for someone else as well. Soon Emma, Lela and myself we will be attending the upcoming annual AHIMA convention, where more exciting ideas will be presented. Am looking forward and excited to share with you our adventure after our return. Look for them in our next newsletter. Looking forward to sharing our convention adventure in the next newsletter. Aloha

2 The count down has begun! What is your facility doing to guarantee a seamless transition to ICD 10- CM? Medicare fee for service HIPAA 5010 and D0 Implementation is required by HIPAA legislation. HIPAA requires that the healthcare industries use standard formats for electronic claims and related transactions. Mandatory compliance of the new 5010 and D0 will be required on January 1, 2012 for all covered entities. Version 5010 will accommodate ICD 10 CM and PCS code sets. The new format will allow for reporting of up to 25 diagnosis and 25 procedure codes per electronic claim form. Medicare is recommending that facilities and providers who are affected begin internal testing January 1, External testing is to begin on January 1, Medicare announced in their national provider conference call on September 13, 2010 that they will be ready to support test to production beginning January 1, During the call it was stressed that covered entities not delay external testing in order to guarantee that claims would not be rejected on January 1, What you need to do to prepare includes. Know what must be changed Upgrade from X12 version 4010A1 to 5010 and from NCPDP 5.1 to D.0 Systems that submit claims, receive remittances, exchange claim status or eligibility inquiry and responses must be analyzed to identify software and business process changes. The new versions have different data element requirements. Medicare FFS has performed a comparison of the current and new formats for the transactions used. More information can be located at ICD 10 CM and ICD 10 PCS Compliance date for implementation is October 1, There will be no delays or grace periods allowed. Dates of service for reporting ambulatory and physician services on or after October 1, 2013 will use ICD 10-CM diagnosis codes. Date of discharges for hospital claims for inpatient settings will on or after October 1, 2010 will use both ICD 10 CM and ICD 10 PCS codes. 4 HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM UPDATES! EXTERN SITES: A special thank you to the HIM team at Tripler Army Medical Center for hosting the following HIT extern students: Hazel Daoang, Dana Fernandez, Crystal Lino and Michele Malek The externship is a crucial component of the Health Information Technology Program by providing students with the opportunity to put classroom theory into practice and to apply the knowledge and skills they have learned at Heald to actual work situations. Externships are taken in the final quarter of the degree program. We applaud all HIM Directors who have taken the opportunity to share their HIM knowledge with one of our HIT students. **AHIMA members who have worked directly with HIT extern students during the extern qualify to earn 1 CEU from AHIMA** Mahalo! 5 As a former Health Information Management Director and currently serving as Program Director for the Heald College HIT Program I ve often asked myself why I do this when my plate is already so full. The answer is simple, my professional duty and obligation. My duty to the organizations I ve worked for who has struggled to hire HIM professionals, duty to my instructors who after a long days work showed up each and every day to share their professional knowledge to prepare me with the necessary tools I needed to write and sit for the RHIA exam and become an HIM professional, duty to the many of YOU out there who asked for a HIT Program here in Hawaii. This is why I continue to serve as the Heald College HIT Program Director for these past 5 years. During this time I ve seen many milestones, the accreditation of the Program through CAHIIM, saw our first graduating class in Jan 2007, and first RHIT accomplishment, established and celebration of the quarterly pinning ceremony by HIT students and the extern instructor, seeing former graduates working in the community as HIM professionals and the continual growth of the Program. This experience has been rewarding beyond my expectations. I m now putting a call out to YOU, HIM directors, managers, and supervisors to give back to the profession by educating our future HIM work force here in Hawaii. If you are interested in teaching and giving back to the HIM profession through Heald College HIT Program please let me know or anyone of the wonderful instructors who currently teach in the HIT Program today. I believe you to will find it rewarding beyond your belief. On behalf of HIT Program and students, I would like to thank the following for their support of the Program and for sharing their HIM knowledge with the students despite their plates being so full.
