He hails from a rural town in the central valley and wants to give back to his or one similar to it. In his experience working with rural physicians, Vincent learned that rural physicians must go beyond their MD to provide for their communities, which led him to UC Davis' Rural Prime MD/ program. He enjoys basketball, road trips, barbecues, and electronics. Name: Amberlyn Ferleman, Degrees: B.S. - Biological Science, Minor Environmental Studies, California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo (2009) Environmental, Human and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, General Public Background/Interest: Since graduating in 2009, Amberlyn has been employed as a lab assistant at a biotechnology company, and more recently as a Registered Environmental Specialist for a county Environmental Division. In this capacity she has conducted food facility and recreational health inspections, including environmental assessments during epidemiological investigations, which has piqued her interest in the tracking and analysis of illness outbreaks. She has also striven to create and provide educational materials to help communicate illness risk factors to the diverse community she serves. After obtaining her, she plans to continue working to reduce health disparities through education and outreach. Name: Timothy Fong, Degree: B.S. Neurobiology Physiology, and Behavioral Sciences UC Davis General Public Graduate Advisor: BY Yoo, MD, Background/ Interest: Timothy s interest in studying Public came during his undergraduate career. Volunteering in the UC Davis Medical Center, he was exposed to many different clinical research studies during his term and saw the importance of prevention healthcare toward overall health of the community. Timothy hopes to pursue public health to benefit underprivileged communities where prevention healthcare can help save many lives. Name: Reid Haflich, Degrees: B.S. Biology, Minor in German, UC Davis (2010) Graduate Advisor: Stephen A. McCurdy, MD, Background/Interest: Reid is an aspiring physician with a strong interest in public health and international health. After graduating from UC Davis he moved to Würzburg, Germany where he lived for a year working in a hospital as a Nurse/OR assistant and became familiar with a new system of health care delivery. Additionally, as an EMT, Reid is very interested in the public health of emergency preparedness and how different systems can affect patient outcome. Reid's interest in cycling is leading him on a cross country tour before beginning his in August. Name: Christina Hodkin, Degrees: B.S.W. - Social Work, Northern Arizona University (2009) Graduate Advisor: David Ross Gibson, PhD Background/Interest: Christina's interest in public health was sparked through a variety of academic and personal experiences from facilitating educational groups for survivors of domestic violence, to care giving work with seniors, to inspiration from conservation biology coursework examining environmental health and sustainability. Her goal in entering the public health arena is to help create healthier communities by focusing on preventing health problems from occurring and promoting healthy lifestyles through increased public awareness and effective educational programs. She enjoys cooking, arts and crafts, kayaking, reading, and all things musical.
2 Name: Johnny Jaber, Degrees: B.S. - Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior, UC Davis (2011) Professional Interest: Human and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases Graduate Advisor: Robert Steven Tharratt, MD, MPVM Background/Interest: While studying neurobiology at UC Davis, Johnny started his research career investigating the relationships between aging, dementia, and memory. After a year, he became a part of the UC Davis Medical Center s Emergency Medicine Research Associates Program, a program which he helps lead today. In the Emergency Department, Johnny specializes in research studying the rapid treatment of patients in septic shock. Johnny s interest in public health stems from his continued focus in the study of infectious diseases. He aims to utilize what he learns in the program in a future career in critical care medicine. Name: Kirstie Kampen, Degrees: B.S. in Biological Sciences, (2011) Professional Interest: Human and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases Graduate Advisor: Christian Sandrock, MD, Background/Interest: During her undergraduate years at UC Davis, Kirstie s interest in public health developed while job-shadowing an Internal Medicine physician at the UC Davis Medical Center. Then Kirstie was involved in the Pre-Medical Surgical Internship at the UC Davis hospital, where she interacted with various surgeons. From this internship, she learned how medicine does not consist of only facts and procedures, but people in need of professionals to serve them. As a result, Kirstie is inspired to serve people with her Master in Public degree. Her future career goal is to become a physician. Kirstie enjoys playing golf and traveling. Name: Hammad Khan, Degrees: B.S. Psychology, UC Davis (2012) Graduate Advisor: Estella M. Geraghty, MD, MS, /CPH, FACP, GISP Background/Interest: While studying at UC Davis, Hammad developed a strong passion for serving underserved communities. As a volunteer at Shifa Community Clinic, a student-run medical facility, Hammad witnessed firsthand the struggles and difficulties facing patients. Furthermore, he worked to address public health issues internationally by helping develop a tele-monitoring program for paraplegic patients in remote regions of Kashmir, Pakistan to ensure their psychological, social, and physical wellbeing. He brings his passion for patient care and dedication to the underserved to the Public program. In his spare time, Hammad enjoys playing basketball, reading, and writing. Name: Sharon Kim, Degrees: B.S. Animal Science, UC Davis (2012) Professional Interest: Veterinary Public, Human and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases Graduate Advisor: Philip H. Kass, DVM, MPVM, PhD Entry Year: 2012 Background/Interest: With a background in Animal Science and a commitment to serving in much needed communities, Sharon has obtained animal health experience focusing her internships in rural and underdeveloped areas. It was in Africa and Mexico where she has developed a sense of global health issues first-hand and encountered poverty and famine highlighted by lingering animal health problems such as disease, nutritional deficiencies, and parasitic infections. Her interest in public health expanded as she came to understand that herd health affects not only animals, but also contributes to a cascade of health effects on the surrounding human population. By obtaining an, Sharon wishes to promote public health through education. Name: Merril Lavezzo, Degrees: B.S. Human Development, B.A. Spanish, Minor in Sexuality Studies, UC Davis (2008) Professional Interest: Maternal and Child Nutrition Graduate Advisor: Dianna Cassady, DrPH Background/Interest: As an undergraduate at UC Davis, Merril interned with Education and Promotion for three years as a sexual health peer educator and HIV test counselor. Upon graduating in 2008, she participated in the AmeriCorps VISTA program for two years and was exposed to a variety of ways to engage and organize low-income communities around health and wellness initiatives. As a graduate student in the program, Merril is interested in exploring diet-related health disparities facing childbearing women from low socio-economic backgrounds. Merril enjoys riding her bicycle, supporting local live music, traveling and baking. Name: Claire Legendre-Sholl, Degrees: B.A. History, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (2000) Professional Interest: General Public Graduate Advisor: Rosemary D. Cress, DrPH Background/Interest: Claire s involvement, and interest, in public health began with her career in the research department at Northwestern Sciences University. She managed two federally funded research studies on spinal dysfunction along with assisting in the daily operations of the research clinic. Additionally, she was an instructor for the Silver Sneakers exercise program which instructs seniors in a combination of aerobics, strength and agility exercise classes to better improve their quality of life. Her experiences working with older adults in the research studies and the Silver Sneakers program has lead to her interest in aging and public health.

Veterinary Technology, St. Petersburg College (2011) Professional Interest: Epidemiology Graduate Advisor: Woutrina Miller, DVM, MPVM, PhD Background/Interest: Working in a profession with roots firmly based in population medicine, coupled with experience gained on global agricultural projects in Egypt, Haiti, Bangladesh and Cuba, have combined to instill within Bonnie a deep appreciation for the One approach to public health efforts. Having recently completed a graduate certificate program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, she intends to complete her and then pursue a doctorate degree in Epidemiology. Bonnie s primary professional focus is on global health issues and the empowerment of rural women. In her spare time, Bonnie enjoys travel, reading, and the study and practice of yoga. Name: Jeremy Meis, Degrees: B.S. - Psychology with Emphasis in Psychobiology, Santa Clara University (2003); Physician Assistant Certification, UC Davis (2012), Evidence Based Medicine Background/Interest: As a recent graduate from the UC Davis FNP/PA program he plans to utilize clinical skills and knowledge to enhance his ability to provide better access to primary care for underserved populations. He is also interested in providing clinicians with access to evidence based guidelines and treatments for their patients. He believes that our healthcare system is in serious need of repair and that public health provides an excellent road map to progress. Lastly, he's interested in helping improve the relationship between public health and medicine to accomplish the mutual goal of better health for all. Name: Amanda Mooneyham, Degrees: B.S. - Biology, University of Nevada, Reno (2009); M.D. - UC Davis School of Medicine (2014) Graduate Advisor: Roger M. Belcourt, MD,, FACOEM Background/Interest: Prior to medical school, Amanda got her first exposure to Public while working at Shasta County's Coroner's Office. She compiled data that led to a study claiming Shasta County as having the second-highest rate of suicide and drug overdose per capita in California. This fueled her desire to improve the community's health by attending medical school. She enrolled in UCDSOM's Rural PRIME program where public health is emphasized in both classroom and clinical encounters. Her other interests include ballroom dance, ski racing, construction, cycling, theatre and travel. Name: Kiyokazu Murai, Degrees: D.V.M., University of Tokyo (2007), M.P.V.M., UC Davis (2012) Professional Interest: Veterinary Public Graduate Advisor: Philip H. Kass, DVM, MPVM, PhD Background/Interest: While working as a veterinary officer for the Ministry of Agriculture of Japanese government, Kiyokazu gained experience in public policy, especially in the field of animal health. During the three and a half years of service, he took part in the disease outbreak responses such as Avian Influenza and Foot and Mouth Disease and developed his interests in epidemiology. After getting Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis, he is further pursuing Master in Public to attain a better understanding and knowledge of applications of public health and preventative medicine not just in humans but also animals. Name: Paul Navo, Degrees: B.S. Exercise Biology, Minor in Chicano Studies, UC Davis (2011) Professional Interest: Nutrition, General Public Graduate Advisor: Adela de la Torre, PhD Background/Interest: Paul's main influence to pursue public health stems from his mother, Dr. Ariane Terlet. Dr. Terlet splits her time between her own private dental practice and working as the dental director for a federally qualified non-profit called La Clinica de la Raza. Growing up, Paul spent a lot of time with his mother as she diligently worked to improve access to care in underserved communities. Paul, a recent graduate of UC Davis, studied abroad in the Fall of 2011 in Oaxaca, Mexico. His experiences there working in various hospitals and community clinics has driven him to do more for those in need. Name: Jyotti Pannu, Degrees: B.A. - Social Welfare, UC Berkeley (2012) Graduate Advisor: Dianna Cassady, DrPH Background/Interest: Jyotti s education and volunteer experiences have played a vital role in shaping her aspirations, strengthening her commitment to public health, and reinforcing her determination for a graduate study. As an undergraduate at U.C. Berkeley not only has she taken various academic classes, but she has also volunteered with several organizations that strive on the principles of public health. Ultimately, Jyotti intends to work as a health educator/advisor in an underserved community, perhaps back home in the Central Valley. She hopes to carry out her passion of working with others, sharing knowledge and empowering individuals to live stronger, better, healthier lives.
4 Name: Denise Piñon, Degrees: B.S. - Psychobiology, UCLA (2008); M.D. UC Davis School of Medicine (2014) Graduate Advisor: Marlene M. von Friederichs-Fitzwater, MS, PhD, Background/Interest: Denise Pinon is a student at the UC Davis School of Medicine who added an additional year to her training in order to purse an. She is part of UC Davis s Rural PRIME program whose vision is to train rural physician leaders. As a child of parents who were farm workers, Denise s desire is to serve the farm working, immigrant community of the Salinas Valley. Her vision is to not only care for individual patients, but also to advocate for vulnerable communities by collaborating with other health and non-health professionals to address the environmental and sociopolitical factors that lead to health inequity. Name: Stacy-Eleanor Ralston, Degrees: B.S.- Neurobiology, Physiology & Behavior, UC Davis (2006) General Public Graduate Advisor: Gerard Bauer Background/Interest: Stacy's interest in public health arose from a culmination of serving in the US Army, travelling to developing countries, and working as a Medical Laboratory Scientist for Kaiser Permanente. She wishes to use her growing experience in Laboratory Medicine in conjunction with what she learns during the program to promote Preventive Medicine through the assessment, development, and delivery of Point of Care testing in underserved communities. Aside from this, Stacy enjoys travelling, cooking, snowboarding, and participating in sprint triathlons. Name: Nadia Rojas Marquez, Degrees: B.A. - Integrative Biology and Ethnic Studies, UC Berkeley (2009) Background/Interest: Nadia s interest in Public arises from her background growing up in a low-income family and being witness to the dire effects of lack of accessible healthcare not only to her family but also to members within her community. Her work with the nonprofit organizations Educators for Fair Consideration (E4FC), the East Bay Sanctuary Covenant (EBSC), and the Ravenswood Family Center have allowed her to see the importance of addressing health issues within underserved populations with a holistic approach, including education and mental health awareness. Therefore, her goal is to increase access to health education and healthcare to underserved populations. Name: Sarah Sabbagh, Degrees: B.A. - Public, Minor in French, UC Berkeley (2011) Background/Interest: Sarah's various internships and coursework at Cal expanded her appreciation for the public health field. She worked at the Policy and Planning Division of the San Mateo County System, where she participated in projects regarding school wellness policies that encourage healthy eating habits and physical activity among youth. Interning at the Kinship Youth Program and the City of Berkeley's Public Division developed Sarah's interest in serving underserved populations by promoting health development and providing them with resources to create a strong, healthy community. Sarah hopes to empower disadvantaged communities of diverse backgrounds on a national and international level. Name: Editha Setiawan, Degrees: B.A., Molecular and Cell Biology, UC Berkeley (2009); B.A., Public, UC Berkeley (2009) Professional Interest: Maternal and Child Graduate Advisor: Heike Thiel de Bocanegra, PhD, Background/Interest: After completing her B.A. in public health, Editha worked for the Global Share initiative and as a reproductive health counselor at Davis Community Clinic. Through these experiences, she developed a passion for health disparities research, particularly as it relates to global maternal and child health. Editha aspires to use her training as a public health practitioner to increase and improve perinatal and family planning services for women and their families through sustainable, community-based interventions. Her specific research interests include maternal nutrition and fetal development, and the role of health education and community development in promoting health equity among underserved populations. Name: Allen Tong, Degrees: B.A. - Molecular and Cell Biology, University of California, Berkeley (2000); M.D. - Dartmouth (2007); Internal Medicine Residency, (2010) Graduate Advisor: Patrick Romano, MD, Background/Interest: Through his medical training, Allen has come to realize how critical a role public health plays in individual patient care. Biological Sciences, UC Davis (2011) Professional Interest: Human and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases Graduate Advisor: Patrick Marius Koga, MD, Entry Year: 2012 Background/Interest: Joanna (Joey) grew being immersed in a family that was dedicated to educating the surrounding community about health and wellness. She continued the pursuit in college by volunteering at the UC Davis heath center's education and promotion program in the field of Wellness. Later on she became a health educator at Imani community clinic. She has most recently become quite involved in the spread of infectious diseases in the hospital environment. Name: Jesse Turner, Degrees: B.S. - Neuroscience, Temple University (2011) Graduate Advisor: Diana Cassady, DrPH Background/Interest: Jesse s interest in public health has come from a variety of disparate sources. As an undergraduate, Jesse studied neuroscience and worked with a group that studied semantic memory. In this position, Jesse learned the power of strong data, and began an interest in translating lab findings into real-world application. Jesse then traveled to southern Chile. There, Jesse worked with an ecologist on various projects, including a study of an invasive alga, and the effects of a recent volcano on the watersheds of Patagonia. Through this work, Jesse became interested in mediating a healthy relationship between man and his environment.
