2 Welcome to Fall 2015 The weather s nice, weekend barbecues, summer holidays and vacations are on everyone s mind who wants to think about fall and winter Mini- Courses? Well... we do! And you will, too, once you get a look at all the great BU mini-courses that will be starting soon. Do we have a course for you!! BU s Mini-Courses start in late August at the NEW Greenly Center located at 50 East Main Street in downtown Bloomsburg. Don t miss out! As always, we continue our selection of most well-attended courses: Computer Technology (Internet Basics, Facebook, EXCEL, QuickBooks, etc.), Stained Glass, Cake Decorating, Pottery, Jewelry Making, Digital Photography, Floral Design, S.A.T. Preparation, Dog Obedience, Microsoft Office software, Golf, Zumba, and Reiki. Learn the basics of E-Bay sales iphone basics. We will also be offering a myriad of courses for children (ages 3-12) including Parent/Child Karate, Basic Drawing, Gymnastics, Sign Language and Cooking. And don t forget about our Career Training Programs; they include Business, Health Care Management, Hospitality, IT and Software Development, Skilled Trades, and more. 3 C OMPUTER C OURSES For Older Adults: Internet Basics (B114A) Are you using the Internet but would like to do so more efficiently? If so, this is the class for you. You'll learn the best way to search the Internet, shop for goods and services, and gain quick access to information you've found by saving your "Favorite" websites, creating "Folders", and searching your computer's "History". You'll also learn how to change your "Home" page and "Search engine", and use "Tabs". Important issues like safety and security are also covered. This class is tailored to meet the interests of students by using the most popular websites, and is an excellent follow-up to the Computer Basics class. Tuesdays, 9AM-12PM / 2 classes, November 10 - November 17 / Instructor: Melinda Garrigan / $67 For Older Adults: Introduction to Facebook (B115A) Want a quick and easy way to keep in touch with friends and relatives? Ever wonder what happened to that best friend from years ago? Do your children and grandchildren talk about Facebook and you wonder what it's all about? Join other adults, and learn how to use Facebook, the most popular social networking site! In this class, you will set up an account; create a profile; learn how to find and chat with friends; and share news, pictures, and more with those close to you. Important issues like security and privacy are also covered. Thursdays, 9-11AM / 2 classes, November 5 - November 12 / Instructor: Melinda Garrigan / $45 For Older Adults: Computer Basics (B130A) We'll start with the basics: learn how to turn on the computer and go from there. This is a hands-on, slowerpaced class just for first-time computer users. You'll get an overview of basic computer terminology and safety, learn keyboard and mouse control, set up your own account, and search for information on the Internet. Join us in a relaxed atmosphere where all your questions are patiently answered and mistakes are expected. You'll have plenty of time to practice in the classroom, with the instructor right there to help! Tuesdays, 9AM-12PM / 4 classes, October 6 - October 27 / Instructor: Melinda Garrigan / $125 Microsoft Word - Beginner Level (B154A) Whether you're just learning word processing, or switching from another software, using Microsoft Word is easy! You'll study basic word processing terminology, discover the fastest and easiest ways to create and edit documents, and learn functions through guided exercises. Topics include: orientation to the Word for Windows screen; formatting and enhancing documents; saving and printing; setting tabs; creating bulleted lists; creating and Registration Form on Page 27 3 formatting tables; working with images, envelopes, and labels; and how to get help fast when you need it. 1.2 CEUs Mondays, 6-9PM / 4 classes, September 14 - October 12 (Skip September 28) / Instructor: Trish Stockalis / $105 Introduction to Excel 2013 (B167A) Learn how to efficiently and effectively use Excel. Topics for this course include: spreadsheet terminology, exploring the Excel window, entering and editing text, basic formulas and functions, inserting rows & columns, page setup, autofill, and basic charts. This beginner course is designed for students who are new to using Excel or would like to learn how to be more efficient. Class taught using the Microsoft Windows operating system. Class fee includes Microsoft Office approved textbook. 1.2 CEUs Thursdays, 6-9PM / 4 class, October 15 - November 05 / Instructor: Trish Stockalis / $125 Intermediate Excel 2013 (B174A) Build on the skills you acquired in Introduction to Excel. You'll learn to manipulate multiple worksheets; use functions such as IF, LOOKUP, and TODAY; sort and organize data using tables; use advanced charting features; and use the PivotTable command. Course will be taught using the Microsoft Windows operating system. Class fee includes Microsoft Office Specialist approved textbook. 1.2 CEUs Mondays, 6-9PM / 4 classes, November 9 - November 30 / Instructor: Trish Stockalis / $125 Introduction to QuickBooks (B186A & B) The commercials for QuickBooks brag that you can be "up and running" immediately! Are you finding that you need a bit more information to use the software successfully? Are you thinking that there must be an easier way to make the software do what you want? Did you just purchase the software and you're hesitant to open the box? Students will learn how to set up a new company; manage bank account transactions; maintain customer job, and vendor information; set up sales tax; and use helpful features like the reminders list and the Company Snapshot window. Students will also create invoices and credit memos, enter and pay bills, add custom fields, set up budgets, and learn how to protect and back up their data. We will also cover the basics of payroll processing inside QuickBooks. While this course is not an accounting course, we will use some introductory bookkeeping terms and concepts. Please note that this course will not cover QuickBooks for Macintosh or Online QuickBooks. You should find this class useful if you have QuickBooks for PC (either Pro,

We will discuss best practices, most common mistakes, and how to keep your auditor happy. Tina Raup, Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor, will demonstrate each function inside the QuickBooks software. You'll leave the class with sample report formats and step-by-step instructions on how to fly through your next audit with the greatest of ease! Friday, 2-4PM / 1 class, September 25 / Instructor: Tina Raup / $29 Computer Repair & Maintenance Made Easy (B194A) Viruses, errors, upgrades, and maintenance your friendly neighborhood computer tech will help you learn about all of these. Students will learn techniques to remove or protect against viruses, spyware, and other malware. Computer hardware and Windows errors will be explained with ways to repair them. Have you ever wanted to get your hands inside your computer and know what all those parts are? A variety of components and plugs will be shown so you can learn how to upgrade or repair the internals of your computer. The class will also delve into network setup and creation, internet connectivity issues, internet browsers, and a variety of computer myths and rumors. The instructor will provide information about a lot of useful tools that can keep your computer running clean, safe, and secure. So if you've ever had a question about how to maintain, repair, or upgrade your computer this is the class for you. Even if you consider yourself to be technology challenged, and you're afraid you won't understand the techno-babble, don't worry-our instructor uses easy to understand terms and computer novices or beginners are always welcome. 5 S PECIAL I NTEREST Basic Dog Obedience (S229A) Sit - Stay - Walk on a leash. Take the Canine Good Citizen test (CGC) awarded by American Kennel Club; this program allows you to stay in hotels & motels with dogs that have this paper or title. A happy dog is an obedient dog, and your household will be a much happier place when your dog responds readily to your commands. Class training is also a great way to socialize your companion around other people and pets. Requirements for testing for the American Kennel Club's exam, as well as Therapy Dogs International, Inc. will be discussed; CGC testing will be conducted at the last class. Our instructor will also offer information on nutrition and general care of dogs. Wear comfortable clothing and sensible shoes. NOTE: The instructors reserve the right to dismiss any animal deemed to be a danger to other animals or persons. Please present a current shot record to the instructor at the first class. Saturdays, 9-10AM / 8 classes, September 05 - October 24 / Instructor: Cecilia Margani / $89 Pet Reiki (S231A) This course includes a distance attunement for your pets at home so they can give Reiki as well as receive it. Enhance your communication with your pet, and learn pet diagnostic techniques to aid in treating them. Pet techniques may also be used with humans; the link to animals provides great insight. Learn how to better link with your pet by learning Earth Reiki, Color Reiki, Linking, Absorbing, Psychometry, and how your pet helps to heal you. Bring a pet collar or toy and a picture of your pet. Do you listen to audiobooks, commercials, or cartoon characters and think, "I could do that?" This fun introductory workshop covers the different types of voiceovers and the tools needed to be successful in the industry. You'll be coached as you perform a real voiceover script; you'll also be recorded so you can receive a professional voiceover evaluation later. Our course is taught by a professional voice actor from the Voice Acting Training Company, Voices For All. Friday, 6-8PM / 1 class, October 30 / Instructor: Voices For All / $65 Instant Curb Appeal (S250A) Ready for a change? Does your home need a facelift? In this fun class, you can add the look that will transform a boring exterior into an inviting, welcoming entranceway. In just one session, we'll make an outstanding fall wreath that will be enjoyed all the way to Thanksgiving. So let the dead leaves blow - your house will be the best attraction on the block! Monday, 7-9:30PM / 1 class, October 5 / Instructor: Ed Zajac / $29 Dog Grooming (S268A) This is a basic course on how to manage and keep your dog's coat in good condition. Discussion will cover what brushes are necessary and available for hair care and how to use them properly, how to avoid matting, and what conditioners are needed to keep the coat silky and beautiful. You'll learn how to trim your dog's nails, clean the pads, and how to clean his ears. A demonstration on teeth cleaning and clipping will be given. This course will be held at the instructor's location in Berwick; directions will be provided with your confirmation letter. Monday, 6-7:30PM / 1 class, October 19 / Instructor: Heather Mason / $35 SOLD! ebay 101 (S285A&B) Join in the fun and excitement of the world of ebay with this informative class on the Internet's most popular auction site. Learn how to start selling items on ebay quickly and avoid some common pitfalls for new sellers. Make the most of your listing with attention-grabbing titles, creative copy, and good photos to help bring the best price for your items. We'll discuss bidding, payment options, shipping, and the feedback forum. You will actually put an item up for bid, track the auction, and complete the transaction during the class. Requirement: able to research the Internet and understand how to access . You'll learn some basic communication skills to assist you when interacting with deaf individuals, such as eye contact, gestures, facial expressions, and basic American Sign Language vocabulary and fingerspelling. Handouts will be provided including a list of suggested books, DVDs, and websites. This is an ideal course for those serving in the public sector, i.e. administrative assistants, teachers, food servers, etc. Beginner and advanced participants welcome. Mondays, 6:45-8:15PM / 6 classes, August 31 - October 12 (Skip September 7) / Instructor: Maureen Hill / $79 Introduction to Ableton Live (S355A) Do you ever wonder how modern electronic music is made? Are you curious about the tools musicians and DJs use? Do you have an interest in music technology, or just want to make some noise? This introductory course will cover Ableton Live, a popular and flexible Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) for Mac or PC. Ableton Live is used by musicians, DJs and sound designers all over the world, both in the studio and in live performance. We'll cover a broad range of basic recording and editing topics, with a focus on getting familiar with some of Ableton's most unique features. Techniques for both beginners and intermediate users will be offered. By the end of this course, you'll know how to compile Live sets from audio and MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) clips, loops, and samples. Prior knowledge of other DAWs is helpful, but not required. Topics will include the original history of the region, the rise of Islam, the collapse of imperialism after the Great War, the post- World War II environment and the origins of U.S. oil addiction, the Arab-Israeli wars, Iran, 9/11, and our military involvement in Iraq & Afghanistan, as well as the impact of ideology and religion, and the influence of U.S. popular culture on our perceptions of the Middle East. Mondays, 6-9PM / 5 classes, August 31 - October 5 (Skip September 7) / Instructor: Karl Zimmerman / $69 K9 Nose Work - Introduction (S380) Looking for a quick, easy and fun activity to tire your dog out? Does your dog need a job? Is your dog a worrier, or does he bark and lunge at other dogs? Whether mutt or purebred, young or old, active or mellow, fearful or reactive, K9 Nose Work may just be the solution for you! NO PRIOR OBEDIENCE TRAINING REQUIRED. K9 Nose Work provides mental and physical exercise and builds a dog's confidence and focus. In this course we cover the basic concepts and foundation skills of K9 Nose Work. You will observe and learn to read your dog and come to admire his superior scenting skills. Enjoy a fun and "no pressure" activity together in a safe and controlled environment and develop an even stronger bond with your dog! Dogs are worked one at a time, and exercises are adapted to each handler/dog team. All sessions will be held inside. Additional information: Dogs must be able to stay quietly in their vehicles out of the owner's sight when it's not their turn. (S385A) TV shows, the Internet, and well-meaning advice from friends and family can be very confusing, and even contradictory, when we try to train our dogs or when behavior issues arise. Your best choice is to talk to a professional! An Independently Certified Professional Dog Trainer and Behavior Consultant will give you an overview and answer common questions about dog training, e.g. jumping on people, coming when called, walking on leash and house training, as well as behavior issues, such as excessive barking, separation anxiety, fear and aggression. Questions about dominance, kids and dogs, training methodologies, shelter dogs, canine health and other dog-related topics can also be addressed. This is a people-only event; please do not bring your dog with you. You'll learn what you need to get started, with a complete display of basic tools and information on where to buy them. Find out what materials are needed, when to purchase them, and what to look for when you're ready to buy. We'll also cover basic fly rod and reel rigging, along with casting for beginners, and basic knots. Materials will be provided. A list of tools you'll need will be included with your course confirmation letter. Wednesdays, 6-9PM / 5 classes, September 9 - October 7 / Instructor: James Hepner / $89 Basic Conversational Spanish (S450A) This class is focused on teaching how to communicate in Spanish for simple situations, travel, shopping, etc. We will utilize a combination of vocabulary structures, gestures, and questioning activities to help students learn how to communicate in the Spanish language. The class is not focused on grammar explanations, but more "Pop-up" grammar to provide a general understanding of the language. There will be short reading actives. Mondays, 6-8PM / 5 classes, October 26 - November 23 / Instructor: Stephanie Egli / $75 Hydroponic Gardening (S580A) If you'd like to garden all year but the changing seasons won't allow it, perhaps you should consider Hrdroponics. Hydroponics is a method of growing plants in soil-free nutrient solutions. Here's your chance to understand the basic setup and daily maintenance of Hydroponics and how it differs from the Aquaponic system. This is a clean and fun way to garden! Saturdays, 10AM-12PM / 2 classes, September 5 - September 12 / Instructor: David Pypiak / $39 Composing Your Past: Writing Memoirs (S621A) An autobiography is the story of an entire life, but a memoir is just one story from that life. You'll create a "life map" as a sort of memory wake-up strategy to remember positive experiences from any time in your past. Sharing your experience in creating your life map with others in the group is a great way to help you sort through memories, and encourage yourself and others to write your own memoir. Memoirs are unique, and are a wonderful way to preserve memories of the past for yourself and your loved ones! Bring a special photo to help stimulate your memories! All individuals have experienced times of sadness and stress, whether on a national level or through personal experiences. In this workshop we'll read pieces of literature, engage in thoughtful conversation, and talk about the different forms of writing that can be effective in achieving inner peace.
