4 How to Approach the Nursing Fair The Nursing Fair is your chance to meet with employers and talk about jobs and internships OR explore opportunities within the field of nursing. Do you have questions? Are you nervous about what to say? Or do you just need some encouragement? Stop by the Career Center Help Table in the Heights Room! There are two different ways to approach the Nursing Fair: A. Exploratory learn about careers at a variety of organizations. Ask questions such as What are the qualities that you look for in entry- level employees? or Could you describe your organization s culture? B. Focused search meet new potential employers, learn about specific job, internship, and graduate school opportunities, and find out how best to apply for these. Here are the steps for the more focused approach: 1. First, take a look through this program and see what organizations are here. The floor plan and employer profiles in the following pages will help you locate specific organizations. 2. If you haven t had a chance to research an employer prior to the event, take some literature from their table (or have a friend get some for you) OR take a look at their website to gain a more complete understanding of what the organization does. 3. Approach employers and introduce yourself. Try to give the employer your own personal 30 second commercial in which you mention your name, class year, career interests, and background as it relates to the employer or the jobs/ internships they are offering. Start with an employer who is NOT at the top of your list to get over the jitters and get a sense of how these conversations go. 4. Be conversational! Be interested in what they have to say, and ask questions. 5. Get their business card, if possible, and once you have left the table, write a note about your conversation (for your thank you note). After the Fair Follow up with a thank you note for the organizations you spoke with, especially those for which you are interested in working. Use the notes you took at the fair to personalize each message. Let the employers know you enjoyed speaking with them and that you hope to set up an interview. For tips on thank you notes, go to Need more help, or didn t find what you were looking for?
