3 Definitions: User Experience ISO defines user experience (UX) as "a person's perceptions and responses that result from the use or anticipated use of a product, system or service". So, user experience is a subjective feeling that is the result of the use of a product or service. Interaction Design Interaction design (IxD) is the study of devices with which a user can interact, in particular computer users. Interaction design defines the behavior (the "interaction") of an artifact or system in response to its users. A simple example of an interaction design would be a submit button on a web form. The interaction would include what happens when the user hovers over the button, when the button is clicked, and the result of such action. For instance, the submit button turns gray on hover, appears to depress when clicked, and ultimately loads another web page to confirm the submission. Experience Design Experience Design is an approach to creating successful experiences for people in any medium. This approach includes consideration and design in all 3 spatial dimensions, over time, all 5 common senses, and interactivity, as well as customer value, personal meaning, and emotional context. Experience Design is not merely the design of Web pages or other interactive media or on-screen digital content. Designed experiences can be in any medium, including spatial/environmental installations, print products, hard products, services, broadcast images and sounds, live performances and events, digital and online media, etc. Information Architecture (IA) Information Architecture is a field and approach to designing clear, understandable communications by giving care to structure, context, and presentation of data and information (see Interaction Design below). There is no difference between the two terms. Some designers refer to information Architecture as concerning "high-level" issues and Information Design as concerning "low-level" or visual issues but it is not possible to separate the two in developing clear communications, regardless of medium. User Interface (UI) A user interface is the system by which people (users) interact with a machine. The user interface includes hardware (physical) and software (logical) components. User interfaces exist for various systems, and provide a means of: Input, allowing the users to manipulate a system, and/or Output, allowing the system to indicate the effects of the users' manipulation. Generally, the goal of human-machine interaction engineering is to produce a user interface which makes it easy, efficient, and enjoyable to operate a machine in the way which produces the desired result. This generally means that the operator needs to provide minimal input to achieve the desired output, and also that the machine minimizes undesired outputs to the human. Ever since the increased use of personal computers and the relative decline in societal awareness of heavy machinery, the term user interface has taken on overtones of the (graphical) user interface, while industrial control panel and machinery control design discussions more commonly refer to human-machine interfaces. Other terms for user interface include human-computer interface (HCI) and man-machine interface (MMI). Clockwork Active Media Systems PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL 3

4 User Interface Design (UID) User interface design or user interface engineering is the design of computers, appliances, machines, mobile communication devices, software applications, and websites with the focus on the user's experience and interaction. The goal of user interface design is to make the user's interaction as simple and efficient as possible, in terms of accomplishing user goals-what is often called user-centered design. Good user interface design facilitates finishing the task at hand without drawing unnecessary attention to itself. Graphic design may be utilized to support its usability. The design process must balance technical functionality and visual elements (e.g., mental model) to create a system that is not only operational but also usable and adaptable to changing user needs. User-Centered Design In broad terms, user-centered design (UCD) is a design philosophy and a process in which the needs, wants, and limitations of end users of a product are given extensive attention at each stage of the design process. User-centered design tries to optimize the product around how users can, want, or need to use the product, rather than forcing the users to change their behavior to accommodate the product. Human Computer Interaction Human-computer interaction (HCI) is the study of interaction between people (users) and computers. It is often regarded as the intersection of computer science, behavioral sciences, design and several other fields of study. Interaction between users and computers occurs at the user interface (or simply interface), which includes both software and hardware; for example, characters or objects displayed by software on a personal computer's monitor, input received from users via hardware peripherals such as keyboards and mice, and other user interactions with large-scale computerized systems such as aircraft and power plants. The Association for Computing Machinery defines human-computer interaction as "a discipline concerned with the design, evaluation and implementation of interactive computing systems for human use and with the study of major phenomena surrounding them." An important facet of HCI is the securing of user satisfaction. HMTL HTML, which stands for HyperText Markup Language, is the predominant markup language for web pages. It is written in the form of HTML elements consisting of "tags" surrounded by angle brackets within the web page content. It is the building blocks of all basic websites. It allows images and objects to be embedded and can be used to create interactive forms. It provides a means to create structured documents by denoting structural semantics for text such as headings, paragraphs, lists, links, quotes and other items. It can embed scripts in languages such as JavaScript which affect the behavior of HTML web pages. HTML can also be used to include Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to define the appearance and layout of text and other material. The W3C, maintainer of both HTML and CSS standards, encourages the use of CSS over explicit presentational markup.[1] CSS Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a style sheet language used to describe the presentation semantics (the look and formatting) of a document written in a markup language. Its most common application is to style web pages written in HTML and XHTML, but the language can also be applied to any kind of XML document, including SVG and XUL. CSS is designed primarily to enable the separation of document content (written in HTML or a similar markup language) from document presentation, including elements such as the layout, colors, and fonts. This separation can improve content accessibility, provide more flexibility and control in the specification of presentation characteristics, enable multiple pages to share formatting, and reduce complexity and repetition in the structural content. CSS can also allow the same markup page to be presented in different styles for different rendering methods, such as on-screen, in print, by voice (when read out by a speech-based browser or screen reader) and on Braille-based, tactile devices. While the author of a document typically links that document to a Clockwork Active Media Systems PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL 4

5 CSS style sheet, readers can use a different style sheet, perhaps one on their own computer, to override the one the author has specified. AJAX Ajax (shorthand for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) is a group of interrelated web development techniques used on the client-side to create interactive web applications. With Ajax, web applications can retrieve data from the server asynchronously in the background without interfering with the display and behavior of the existing page. The use of Ajax techniques has led to an increase in interactive or dynamic interfaces on web pages. Like DHTML and LAMP, Ajax is not a technology in itself, but a group of technologies. Ajax uses a combination of HTML and CSS to mark up and style information. The DOM is accessed with JavaScript to dynamically display, and to allow the user to interact with, the information presented. JavaScript A client side programming language that is used in building interactive functionality to web pages. Flash Adobe Flash is a multimedia platform used to add animation, video, and interactivity to Web pages. Flash is frequently used for advertisements and games. More recently, it has been positioned as a tool for "Rich Internet Applications". ActionScript ActionScript is a scripting language developed by Adobe. It is a dialect of ECMAScript (meaning it has the same syntax and semantics of the more widely known JavaScript), and is used primarily for the development of websites and software targeting the Adobe Flash Player platform, used on Web pages in the form of embedded SWF files. Originally developed by Macromedia, the trademark in the language is now owned by Adobe (which acquired Macromedia in 2005), though the language itself is "open source" in the sense that its specification is offered free of charge and both an open source compiler (as part of Adobe Flex) and open source virtual machine (Mozilla Tamarin) are available. TypeKit Typekit is a subscription service that allows webmasters and designers to embed non-standard, non-systemspecific fonts into online documents. It uses the only recently CSS property and is available to the public. 7 Design Tips Remember, it's not about what you as the designer think, rather how the end user will react to the design. Put thought into who your users are and if possible hold user tests to see them interact with the design first hand. Embrace the fact that you can't control interactive design in the same way you can a printed piece. If your design will ultimately be handed off to someone else for production, include your production partner as early as possible in the design process. Don t be afraid to dig in. Viewing the source of any web site is a great way to start. Create your own site using free blog software like Wordpress and try your hand at customizing the look and feel. The launch of a web site is just the beginning. Remember that most web content is fluid. All areas containing content should be planned to grow to accommodate added content. Fixed size boxes are not flexible enough to display most content. Rounded corners are not the answer to every design problem. Use gradient backgrounds with caution. Gradients should tile or reach a solid color eventually. They should also have a minimum height to be cut off at that still looks good. If they are placed behind transparency, drop shadows, rounded corners, or inner shadows it's doable but getting too complicated with this adds budget and headaches. PSD files should be well organized, labeled, and include hover states for all links, buttons and navigations. Images don't scale on the web well. Instead use tiling or fading to a solid color. Changing the visual style of form drop downs and check/radio buttons can be tricky. Talk with your development partner before committing to non-standard form elements. CSS 3 - Progressive Enhancement Your site does not have to look pixel perfect on all browsers. Plan for the common denominator but support current and future browsers with new technologies.
