1 Flammable and Cmbustible Liquids (a) (18) Cmbustible liquid means any liquid having a flashpint at r abve 100 F (37.8 C). Cmbustible liquids shall be divided int tw classes as fllws: (i) Class II liquids shall include thse with flashpints at r abve 100 F (37.8 C) and belw 140 F (60 C), except any mixture having cmpnents with flashpints f 200 F (93.3 C) r higher, the vlume f which make up 99 percent r mre f the ttal vlume f the mixture. (ii) Class III liquids shall include thse with flashpints at r abve 140 F (60 C). Class III liquids are subdivided int tw subclasses: (a) Class IIIA liquids shall include thse with flashpints at r abve 140 F (60 C) and belw 200 F (93.3 C), except any mixture having cmpnents with flashpints f 200 F (93.3 C), r higher, the ttal vlume f which make up 99 percent r mre f the ttal vlume f the mixture. (b) Class IIIB liquids shall include thse with flashpints at r abve 200 F (93.3 C). This sectin des nt cver Class IIIB liquids. Where the term "Class III liquids" is used in this sectin, it shall mean nly Class IIIA liquids. (iii) When a cmbustible liquid is heated fr use t within 300 F (16.7 C) f its flashpint, it shall be handled in accrdance with the requirements fr the next lwer class f liquids. (19) Flammable liquid means any liquid having a flashpint belw 100 F (37.8 C), except any mixture having cmpnents with flashpints f 100 F (37.8 C) r higher, the ttal f which make up 99 percent r mre f the ttal vlume f the mixture. Flammable liquids shall be knwn as Class I liquids. Class I liquids are divided int three classes as fllws: (i) Class IA shall include liquids having flashpints belw 73 F (22.8 C) and having a biling pint belw 100 F (37.8 C). (ii) Class IB shall include liquids having flashpints belw 73 F (22.8 C) and having a biling pint at r abve 100 F (37.8 C). (iii) Class IC shall include liquids having flashpints at r abve 73 F (22.8 C) and belw 100 F (37.8 C). HAZARDOUS MATERIALS/ a/1-95
2 FLASH POINT -- the lwest temperature at which a flammable liquid will give ff enugh vaprs t frm an ignitable mixture with the air abve the surface f the liquid r within its cntainer. LOWER FLAMMABLE LIMIT -- the percentage f vapr in the air abve which a fire can't ccur because there isn't enugh fuel: the mixture is said t be t lean. UPPER FLAMMABLE LIMIT -- the percentage f vapr in the air abve which there isn't enugh air fr a fire: the mixture is said t be t rich. VAPOR DENSITY -- the weight f a flammable vapr cmpared t air. (). Vaprs with a high density are mre dangerus and require better ventilatin because thay tend t flw alng the flr and cllect in lw spts. PEL -- the Permissible Expsure Limit f the vapr accrding t OSHA standards, expressed in parts f vapr per millin parts f cntaminated air. The PEL is listed because many f these substances present inhalatin as well as fire hazards.
