17 GCSE Preparation for Working Life (Short Course) Specimen Assessment Materials 17 Positive marking MARK SCHEME GENERAL MARKING GUIDANCE It should be remembered that candidates are writing under exam conditions and credit should be given for what the candidates writes rather than being penalised for omissions. Marks should not be deducted for a less than perfect answer if it satisfies the criteria of the mark scheme, nor should they be added as a consolation where they are not merited. Unexpected but acceptable answers The mark scheme gives and indication of the likely responses of candidates but examiners must be prepared to award marks appropriately for answers which are unexpected but are nevertheless worthy of credit. If an examiner is unsure about the validity of such a response they should seek advice from the chief examiner. Quality of Written Communication Candidates will be assessed on their Quality of Written Communication in questions 7b or 8c. Levels of response are used for these questions, so that higher level skills, particularly of analysis and evaluation, can be rewarded, along with the quality of communication. Mark schemes for these components include the following specific criteria for the assessment of written communication: Legibility of text; accuracy of spelling, punctuation and grammar; clarity of meaning; Selection of a form and style of writing appropriate to purpose and to complexity of subject matter.

Allow 2 marks An illness/disease caused by the type of work, the equipment used or the work environment. 0-2 marks AO1 Allow 1 mark for each of three illnesses/diseases Answers may include reference to the following: Skin diseases, such as dermatitis Respiratory diseases, such as silicosis Cancer, due to contact with a carcinogen such as asbestos Disorders of the central nervous system Blood poisoning Birth defects as a result of contact with certain substances that damage human genes Back problems Occupational deafness Stress and depression Occupational asthma And one mark for an accompanying and relevant occupation. 0-6 marks AO1 2. (a) Allow 1 mark for each correct colour and 1 mark if it is correctly matched to the instruction. Allow 1 mark for each appropriate example correctly used. 0-8 marks AO1 Yellow Warning sign Example: warning of hazards such as flammable materials, electricity cables, wet floors, etc. Red Prohibition sign; example, prohibiting certain actions such as smoking. Blue Mandatory sign; telling people that they must do something Example: such as wearing hearing protection, hard hats etc. Green Safe condition signs; giving information (allow 'show') about safety features. Example: the location of fire exits, first aid stations, etc.

Explanation; How likely is it that the hazard will actually cause harm? Everyone (see b below) has an equal chance of being appointed to a job, and/or the employer treats everyone in the workplace equally. And one mark for any three of the following: Gender Sexual orientation Status as a married person Colour Nationality Ethnic origin Religion Beliefs Disability Pregnancy Childbirth Maternity leave Trade Union membership Part time worker 0-4 marks AO1 2 AO3 2 Level 1 Level 2 Award 0-3 marks for an answer that recalls some knowledge and demonstrates a basic understanding that both employer and employee have a duty to prevent discrimination in the workplace. Expression is adequate to convey meaning, though errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar are apparent. Award 4-6 marks for an answer that recalls knowledge and demonstrates a clear understanding of the laws relating to discrimination, and points out that an employer sets the standard and influences the attitudes and actions of the employees, and therefore can ultimately be held responsible. The answer will include a range of ideas with evidence of detailed discussion. The response is well structured and clearly expressed, with few errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar. 0-6 marks AO1 3 AO3 3

Award 4-6 marks for an answer that recalls knowledge and demonstrates a clear understanding of several advantages of a website to a modern business as well as some disadvantages and which emphasises that in the long-term the business will benefit because it is clear that a rapidly increasing number of people buy goods online instead rather than in a shop. The answer will include a wide range of realistic suggestions with evidence of detailed discussion.
