Introduction The cloud is suddenly everywhere. The five-year annual growth rate for IT cloud services is projected to be 26.5 percent that s six times the growth rate of traditional IT service offerings 1. Virtualization and cloud computing are the #1 and #2 technology priorities for CIOs in And the top three factors causing enterprises to move to cloud are, in order, access to expertise; lower overall cost; and need for 24/7 coverage 3. There are many reasons why cloud is going mainstream so quickly. Cloud solutions: Are lightweight. Businesses want a straightforward installation process and user interface that brings computing resources on line quickly. Don t require commitments. Businesses desire environments that allow them to use resources for short periods of time, that can quickly support application prototyping, proofs-of-concept, and early-stage software development. Can be delivered instantly. Businesses want to order data center stacks online immediately, not wait weeks or months to negotiate procurement and capacity hurdles. Billed based on usage. Businesses want to only pay for the resources consumed, so as to better align cost with revenue. Are highly scalable. Customers want to be able to rapidly scale up their infrastructure as demand justifies. But today s businesses require more than just these minimal cloud attributes. Savvis compared existing market research with the business and application development needs of our enterprise customers, and identified additional attributes that need to be defined to satisfy the enterprise cloud experience. These attributes primarily revolve around the varying levels of quality of service (QoS) tied to the application deployment lifecycle, network, security, and data access/protection capabilities of the cloud offering. Specifically, they include: Enterprise security. The cloud offering must be able to help support a businesses compliance requirements, provide enterprise-grade firewalls, and integrated virtual security. Solution QoS. There must be performance and variable options offered for QoS, backed by meaningful service level agreements. Storage access/protection/availability. The solution must offer automated information lifecycle management (ILM), replicated data, data retention, and data protection. High availability and scalability. An optimal cloud offering will support variable virtual machines (VMs), profile sizes, dynamic resources, balancing, and execution orchestration. Overview The Savvis Symphony Virtual Private Data Center (VPDC) service is an enterprisegrade infrastructure and hosting management service that provides businesses with dynamic and scalable compute capabilities, allowing them to reduce overall costs, while focusing on core projects and addressing variable IT capacity needs. Symphony VPDC delivers all this, and more. It offers a true highly available solution that accounts for every aspect of an enterprise IT Infrastructure environment, from development to production. This includes provisioning and maintaining servers, network, storage, software and security. 1 Gartner: Forecast: Sizing the Cloud; Understanding the Opportunities in Cloud, March Gartner Expo February State of the Data Center Report, Symantec January

The Symphony VPDC solution enables businesses to adapt to the rapidly changing economic and technological environment with speed, simplicity, and efficiency while reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO). Savvis provides a HA infrastructure, managed and supported by Savvis and tuned to support mission-critical applications. As an integrated solution that is highly responsive, extremely reliable, and simple to provision and maintain, Symphony VPDC enables businesses to mitigate risks of application and infrastructure failure and errors in day-to-day operations. Symphony VPDC provides cloud computing at three service profiles: Essential, Balanced and Enterprise. Each level of the product is optimized to balance cost versus security, flexibility, performance, and redundancy. All three offerings are supported by a robust and highly available architecture of compute, storage, network functionality, and high performance SAN connectivity. Defining the VPDC Virtual private data centers (VPDCs) are collections of network, security, storage, and compute resources and processes that exist in the cloud. The resources and processes provided by VPDCs were specifically designed to support multi-tenant deployment infrastructure in separate logical containers. These in turn support multiple levels of service per deployment, including network service level agreements (SLAs), security SLAs, compute SLAs, quality of service (QoS), and backup. The service model leveraged to define the VPDC is shown below. 1. Access WAN 2. Security 3. Redirection 4. Network Delivery 5. Web Compute Tier 7. Security 9. Security 8. App Compute Tier 10. db Compute Tier 6. SAN 12. App Performance 11. Tier Availability Data Access/Mobility Data Protection Storage (Latency) 3

Each item 1-12, represents the entire configuration, monitoring, and reporting for a single application deployment instance of a VPDC service profile. 1. Access: Represents the configuration elements around the network access methods of internet, internet optimized, private, or private optimized. 2. Security: Represents the configuration elements around the perimeter security policies including Web application firewall, perimeter firewall, data leakage prevention, threat management, messaging, and URL filtering. 3. Redirection: Represents the configuration elements around site selection methods of virtual or dedicated. 4. Network Delivery: Represents the configuration elements around server availability of basic or high availability (HA). 5. Web Compute Tier: Represents the configuration elements associated with the first server tier including: CPU, memory, resource management, application configuration, and associations. 6. SAN connected to tier 3 media (SATA drives): Represents the configuration elements around data access, protection, and storage a. Data Access Block base storage using radial placement technology and automated RAID migration. All writes are on RAID 10 and then migrated to RAID 6 b. Data Protection uses crash consistent SNAP copies or customer created SNAP copies c. Secondary Data Protection using enterprise backup technology d. Storage (Latency) Storage I/O latency is impossible to guarantee in a multi tenant environment. That being said, volumes at this profile type will normally have the highest average latency when compared to other two profiles. These volumes reside on SATA drives only and have the highest VMFS to vmdk ratio. The best way to determine if the storage performance is sufficient is to benchmark your application against the environment 7. Security: Represents the configuration elements around the App Compute and db Compute firewall policies 8. App Compute Tier: Represents the configuration elements associated with the second server tier, if applicable, including: CPU, memory, resource management, application configuration, and associations. 9. Security: Represents the configuration elements around the compute tier02 firewall. 10. dbcompute Tier: Represents the configuration elements associated with the third server tier, if applicable, including CPU, memory, resource management, application configuration, and associations. 11. Tier Availability: Represents the configuration elements for no HA, local HA, or disaster recovery. 12. Application performance: Represents the configurations elements for server monitoring, application monitoring, and end-user response time 4

Scalable Components A VPDC is the collection of all these configuration elements for a single application architecture deployment. A VPDC is the smallest configuration unit within a Virtual Data Center (VDC). The VDC and VPDC relationship is displayed below: Cloud Site 2000 Virtual Servers/VDC Foundation Virtual Data Center Virtual Data Center Virtual Data Center Management Network Virtual VPDC LDAP URLs Logging DNS GLB All VMs In App Arch Disk Mgt Retention Recovery SLB FW The highest level of the Symphony architecture is the Cloud Site a physical data center that has the required Symphony technology installed. Each Cloud Site requires a Foundation Point of Deployment (f), along with a series of VDCs. The Foundation provides many of the common data center services required by data center applications, delivered by sub-components known as the Management, Network, Storage, and Virtual s. The Foundation provides all the services required to support many of the core services listed above (configuration items 1, 2, 3, 4 and 12 in Figure 1 above). The series of VDCs are used to segment and manage the array of Compute s that provide the core computing power required for application deployment (configuration items 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 in Figure 1 above). Within each Cloud Site, VPDCs are defined out of the Compute, Management, Network, Storage, and Virtual capacity, and provisioned using the configuration and management details required for each customer s application environment. Cloud Sites can contain multiple Foundation s, and Foundation s can contain multiple VDCs. By logically associating the required services into the VPDC model, the architecture is able to semlessly transition workloads within the VDC, within the Cloud Site, or between Cloud Sites with automated reconfiguration of services. Additionally, all SLA and historical data are preserved with the VPDC when it migrates between physical resources. 5

Architectural Overview The Symphony VPDC architecture is the next logical leap forward for data center automation, based on Savvis experience with IT infrastructure virtualization over the past several years. The development of this architecture began with an analysis of the core market requirements of a cloud computing solution. The differentiated cloud computing offering, requires careful synthesis of the core virtual-server capabilities with enterprise-grade data center policy management. The resulting systems architecture which keeps all this orchestrated is shown on right. Cloud OS Business Orchestration/Service Fulfillment Cloud Database Cloud Orchestration Cloud Infrastructure Systems Management Service Support SLA Management Incident Management Event Management Security Network Data Center Fabric Compute Resources Storage Resources The architecture consists of five areas: Portal/User interface and proxy/api. This is the user interface to provision VPDC attributes, with the portal and API interface presents the service catalog profiles. Cloud OS. This is the software business intelligence area that is designed to provide a layer of abstraction and tightly integrate business intelligence between the customer s desired configuration attributes and the infrastructures provisioning of these attributes. The capacity algorithm, service queuing, service catalog, service design, and provisioning manifest components reside in the Cloud OS. Cloud Orchestration. This is the automated provisioning software which instantiates VPDCs within the Symphony infrastructure to match the requirements designed by the customer through the Portal or API. Systems Management/Service Support. Customer support is critical to the Symphony VPDC user experience, as most tiers are fully managed by Savvis. This software sub-system consists of virtualization-aware modules that provide SLA Management, Event Monitoring, Security Event Correlation, and Incident Management for each VPDC. 6

Cloud Infrastructure. This, the physical infrastructure underlying the cloud, consists of the following areas: Data Center Fabric Managed through converged hardware/software architecture, the Symphony fabric incorporates the new IEEE standard around data center Ethernet (DCE) and represents the next generation of virtualization-aware networking and computing. This fabric links the Foundation s with each VDC in a Cloud Site. Compute Resources Each C leverages VMware vsphere 4.0 software, optimized for system firmware infrastructures on HP Proliant and Cisco UCS server platforms. Network services The Symphony network layer is managed through Cisco software modules to deliver Internet, connectivity, VLANs, SSL Virtual Private Network (VPN), application control policies, and network security. Storage Traditional storage services are enhanced through the integration of N-Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) and block level ILM. Security Both traditional security services and virtualization-aware security tools are integrated into the Symphony solution Service Profiles A key architectural aspect of the Symphony VPDC is the concept of service profiles to enable different QoS tiers of service. We accomplished this by defining a minimum set of essential architectural components required to deploy a cloud computing infrastructure. All service profiles are built upon this same cloud infrastructure with the service catalog providing additional key functionality to expand the service level support. The service profiles introduced by Symphony VPDC are Essential, Balanced, and Enterprise. Essential Service Profile Description The Essential Service Profile architecture was focused on the Application Development Lifecycle stage of development and test use case. In this use case, each VPDC provides the appropriate resources to the customer to quickly deploy and test its software or applications. Each VPDC provides: Dedicated public VLAN Minimal bandwidth guarantees / best effort Tier 3 SAN storage Crash consistent (every 24 hours) or customer initiated local SNAP shots with data backups Essential security ACLs 7

Balanced Service Profile Description The Balanced Service Profile is focused towards the non-mission critical web hosting and SMB use case. In this use case, each VPDC provides the appropriate front office and back office resources for the customer to quickly deploy software or applications. Each VPDC provides: Normal and flexible compute resources configuration Local server resiliency 1 Private VLAN with 3 logically separate network tiers Middle-tier bandwidth / QoS Middle-tier storage performance with two-tier ILM Crash consistent (every 8 hours) or customer initiated local SNAP shots with data backups Integrated VMSafe enterprise-grade virtual firewalls Enterprise Service Profile Description The Enterprise Service Profile is focused towards the mission critical enterprise application use case. In this use case, each VPDC provides the appropriate application tiers and resources for the customer to quickly deploy software or applications. Each VPDC provides: Physical compute resources maximized Geographic server resiliency Multiple dedicated VLANs Highest bandwidth / QoS Highest storage performance with three-tier ILM Crash consistent (every 4 hours) or customer initiated local SNAP shots with data backups Geographic replication with digital vaulting Enterprise Grade Physical Firewalls Integrated VMSafe Enterprise Grade Virtual IPS Web Application Firewall Service Catalog The service catalog defines the VPDC services and the individual component configuration definitions and options. The service catalog captures all the technical details and options available to each VPDC deployment. The commercial model is linked to the service catalog. Cloud OS The Cloud OS is software developed to provide integrated business intelligence and designed to provide a layer of abstraction between the physical infrastructure and the application architecture. The Cloud OS intelligence that we developed was around capacity and resource management algorithms, service queuing, service design, and provisioning manifest to infrastructure components. 8

WHITE PAPER: Cloud Computing Provisioning Manifest The provisioning manifest consists of the following configuration elements: servicelocation The customer will have ability to select a service location to deploy their VPDC site. networktiers VMs can be deployed into 3 networks scenarios: - Essential VMs have public IP Address space and will all be in 1 private VLAN per customer. - Balanced VMs have private IP Address space and will be in 1 private VLAN per customer. Each logical tier of the application architecture is deployed on port profile tiers to segregate tier communication. Balanced VM s will have the option to Load Balance or NAT to public IP(s) at pny VM or server tier. - Enterprise VMs have private IP Address space and will be in 1 private VLAN per server tier. The current design allows for up to 3 server tiers. Technically, we can provision addition tiers. Enterprise VM s will have the option to Load Balance or NAT to public IP(s) on any VM or server tier. Storage VMs are by default provided with one 25GB Boot LUN (not modifiable) and one 25 GB data LUN modifiable in 50 GB increments up to 500GB. Multiple data LUNs are configurable per VM. Computes Consists of the CPU and Memory configuration for all the VMs within the VPDC. Each VM is configured within a \resource class. securityacl Specification of integrated firewall ACL rules to segregate security policies on VMs and provide protection of VMs during vmotion events. virtual Specification of Cisco ACE NAT, load balancing, and perimeter firewall rules. servertierfirewall Specifies the server tier firewall rules for communication between the 3 logical application tiers. Consists of 1 or more firewall rules each. ipsservice Specifies the IPS configuration and signature update intervals for Enterprise VMs. wafservice Specifies the WAF configuration and signature update intervals for Enterprise VMs. integritymonitoringservice Specifies the guest (VM) file integrity monitoring configuration. Summary The Savvis Symphony Virtual Private Data Center (VPDC) service is a superior quality infrastructure and hosting management service that offers dynamic and scalable compute capabilities, allowing businesses to reduce overall costs while focusing on core projects and addressing variable IT capacity needs. Symphony VPDC provides cloud computing at three service profiles: Essential, Balanced and Enterprise Profiles, with each level of the product offering an increasing level of security, flexibility, and complexity.
