6 ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY AT SAIT POLYTECHNIC English language proficiency is a requirement for all SAIT programs. To demonstrate proficiency, you must have completed three years of full-time instruction in the English language, with a minimum of 12 hours instruction per week, or have successfully completed academic assessment testing in one of the following: International English Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum score of 6.0 in each skill category; Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) with a minimum 60 overall band; Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Internet Based (IBT) with a minimum 80 overall score, and a minimum of 20 in each category; Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment (CLBA) with a score of 8 in all sections; English proficiency exams are valid for one year; Completion of level 5 of the SAIT Polytechnic English Language Foundations (ELF) program. 3

8 ENGLISH LANGUAGE TRAINING FOR ENTRY INTO SAIT CAREER PROGRAMS FULL-TIME LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION Our full-time English language program offers eight-week terms of upgrading from Benchmark 4 to Benchmark 8. Each course focuses on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skill areas to prepare you for a career or pursue further studying. Program Start Dates September 3, 2013 January 6, 2014 October 28, 2013 March 3, 2014 May 5, 2014 July 2, 2014 September 2, 2014 English Language Foundations P E. english.language@sait.ca Course Details Monday to Friday 8:00 am 6:00 pm (subject to availability) Morning and afternoon classes are available. Program Fees Domestic students: $1,300 per eight-week term (full-time). International students: $2,600 per eight-week term (full-time). Books and materials for each term cost approximately $150-$200. Skills Investment Program funding may be available for qualified applicants (see page 20). Admission Requirements To enter the English Language Foundations program, you must achieve a minimum of Benchmark 4 on the Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment (CLBA) or the Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test (CLBPT). Contact English Language Foundations to arrange an assessment. CLBA scores are accepted within six months of the test date. Students who take a break for one term in their training are required to take the CLBA before registering. Teacher-assessed CLBA scores are not accepted. How to Apply To start the enrolment process, visit or call the English Language Foundations office (MC 217, Stan Grad Centre, ). Plan well in advance of seeking admission into a SAIT career program; each English Language Foundations level will take eight weeks to complete. 5

9 CONTINUING EDUCATION PART-TIME LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION English Language Foundations offers a variety of part-time Continuing Education courses to help students prepare for the workplace and become proficient in the fundamental reading, writing, listening and speaking skills found in the SAIT full-time English language training program. These courses are designed to be taken independently or as supplemental instruction to the SAIT fulltime language program. Learn how to promote yourself, make the most of your career and educational experience, work as a team and prepare for the Canadian workforce. ENGLISH FOR CANADIAN COMMUNICATION Discover mainstream Canadian work culture and learn how to successfully work as a team, analyze communication skills, and practice conflict management techniques. Participants must: Be ready to enter the job market; Demonstrate a Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment level 7 in all skills; Be enthusiastic about learning Canadian workplace culture and language. Course Fees Domestic students: $415 EMPLOYMENT PREPARATION Ease yourself into the Canadian workforce; topics include resumé and cover letter writing, job interview preparation and practice, participating in business meetings, and delivering a business presentation. Participants must: Be ready to enter the job market; Demonstrate a Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment level 7 in all skills; Be enthusiastic about learning Canadian workplace culture and language. 11 WORKPLACE COMMUNICATION FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT) PROFESSIONALS Make the most of your past experience to enter the Alberta IT labour force as an instructionally-skilled information technology professional. This course provides: Fifteen-week, 375-hour language and communication upgrading (25 hours/week); Eight-week practicum in the workplace; Guest speakers; Workplace readiness training; Follow-up at 90 and 180 days after completion of the training program; Certificate of completion. Participants must: Hold a degree or technical diploma in a computer science or computer engineering discipline or equivalent; Have at least two years related IT experience in their own country and within the last two years; Demonstrate a Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment level 7 in all skills (level 6 in writing); Be enthusiastic about learning the Canadian workplace culture and language. 12 READY TO TEACH This course helps highly skilled and professionally-trained newcomers with a background in post-secondary instruction enhance their English language skills in order to meet qualifications to teach adult learners in the Canadian post-secondary system. This course provides: 12-week language/instructional skills training; Four-week practicum with a regional post-secondary education/training institute and/or mentorship; Workplace readiness training; Follow-up at 90 and 180 days after completion of the course; Certificate of completion. Participants must: Hold a master s or PhD degree in a technical discipline; Be an experienced technical instructor; Be an internationally-educated professional; Demonstrate a Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment level 7 in all skills; Be enthusiastic about learning the Canadian post-secondary culture and language. 14 SCHOOLS,000S OF AREERS ENGLISH LANGUAGE FOUNDATIONS OFFERS STUDENTS THE LANGUAGE TRAINING NEEDED TO GAIN ACCEPTANCE INTO A SAIT CAREER PROGRAM. Types Of Career Programs Offered: Applied Degree An academic program involving four years of full-time study that includes a practicum component where students gain industry experience as part of their degree. Apprenticeship Programs An education and training system that requires registered apprentices to complete a specific number of on-the-job training hours and periods of technical training at an approved training provider, followed by successful completion of industry exams. Baccalaureate Degree An academic program involving four years of full-time study which provides a more theoretical or academic approach to learning with the opportunity for post-graduate studies. Certificate An academic program commonly involving one year or less of full-time study within a specialized field of study that is recognized by industry. Certificate of Achievement An academic program that includes two or more evaluated courses, totalling more than 144 hours. Diploma An academic program involving two or three years of full-time study within a specialized field of study that is recognized by industry. Pre-Apprenticeship An educational training program that ranges from 21 to 24 weeks in length. These programs teach trade knowledge and skills through hands-on training and formal instruction and usually lead into an apprenticed trade. Pre-Employment Programs An educational program that provides hands-on training and is commonly 12 weeks in length. Many pre-employment programs lead into an apprenticed trade.

23 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT AND RECOGNITION A prior learning assessment allows you to apply for transfer credit or direct entry into a SAIT program based on previous post-secondary education or related work experience. Those that apply to SAIT with a transcript from outside of Canada will require a Foreign Document Assessment. All documentation must be translated to English and approved, signed and stamped by an official translator. SAIT will accept the International Qualifications Assessment Services (IQAS) assessment for educational institutions, and may also accept other recognized assessments. If you have significant experience in a specialized field or have taken courses provided by non-traditional educational organizations, you can apply for credit at SAIT by submitting relevant documentation for assessment. 24 PAYING FOR YOUR EDUCATION There are a serveral programs and resources available to help fund your studies. Skills Investment Program The Alberta Works Skills Investment Program provides government grant funding for tuition, books, and living expenses for qualified students. Funding for English Language Foundations courses may be available. Please inquire. 25 PAYING FOR YOUR EDUCATION - CONTINUED Student Awards SAIT offers more than $3.9 million in scholarships, bursaries and prizes to 3,650 students in almost every program. Awards are offered to all qualifying students in recognition of academic success, financial need, community involvement and more. 26 MENTORSHIP PROGRAM Through a partnership with the Calgary Region Immigrant Employment Council (CRIEC), SAIT offers ELF and international students the opportunity to participate in a mentorship program. CRIEC brings together skilled immigrants and established professionals in occupation-specific mentoring relationships. Participants must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, a mature SAIT student with a minimum of three years of current work experience (in any country), and unemployed or under-employed with a desire to re-engage in your professional field. Those participating in the program must also be comfortable working in English and hold a Canadian Language Benchmark level 7 or higher.
