Despite the demonstrated benefits of the cloud, many misconceptions about it remain. According to a new Gartner report, While cloud is becoming part of the fabric of IT, confusion is still rampant, and longstanding beliefs about security and operations continue to cloud opinions and approaches. Introduction A Strategic Imperative Given how entrenched the cloud has become in the business/it lexicon, it s not surprising to see growing enthusiasm for the potential and power of cloud computing. A new study from IDG 1 found that 49 percent of executive-level managers see cloud computing as transformational to their business, while another 40 percent are having their IT staff investigate the potential benefits cloud computing could provide their business. With IP traffic continuing to grow at an annual rate of 31 percent, 2 businesses need cloud-based solutions to intelligently manage their data and critical operational processes to handle the explosive growth of mobile, internet, and corporate-based data. Many midsize and large companies are leveraging the cloud to reduce fixed costs, take advantage of new business opportunities, and respond more rapidly to changing business conditions. If a company sees a new market opportunity, it can leverage cloud resources to launch a marketing campaign instantly. Cloud storage gives employees instant access to the most accurate, up-to-date information, even when they are on the road or working from home. As the cloud becomes a strategic imperative, analysts say companies should move beyond viewing the cloud in monolithic terms, and develop a finely honed strategy based on their specific situation and business needs and then choose a cloud provider who is flexible enough to offer capabilities that mesh with those needs. Drivers of Cloud Adoption Cloud computing is becoming an important element in helping companies keep up with the speed of business and meet ever-increasing customer demands. The IDG study found the biggest drivers for investing in cloud-based technology are: Enabling business continuity (43 percent), greater flexibility to react to changing market conditions (40 percent), speed of deployment (39 percent), and improving customer support or services (38 percent). 3 A report in Network World Magazine 5 detailed how large companies are taking a pragmatic approach to cloud computing, and are achieving significant benefits. Some are using cloud applications that can be spun up in minutes to accommodate growth in fast-paced markets. In the article, executives talked about how the cloud has halved the time for addressing business requests, while providing twice the service in terms of uptime and reliability. 2 3

With the cloud, computing resources are only a click away. If a company sees a new market opportunity, it can leverage cloud resources to launch a marketing campaign instantly. Cloud storage gives employees instant access to the most accurate, up-to-date information, even when they are on the road or working from home. That means a salesperson no longer has to wait to get back to the office to answer a customer s question or respond to a request. Speed and agility are king, and the cloud provides the capabilities that are demanded in a world that moves at internet speed. Along these lines, many companies are turning to Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), where they own and manage their own software and just rent the storage and servers that support them from a third party. The IaaS model dramatically lowers the cost of service delivery because of shared infrastructure. It provides significant capital expense savings, since companies no longer have to invest in pricy servers and other infrastructure. Operational expenses generally can also be reduced thanks to the efficiencies of the cloud. By working with a cloud provider, you effectively are leveraging their economies of scale, and that should benefit your bottom line. A recent study 6 by the Aberdeen Group showed the wide range of uses for IaaS: 33 percent of companies are using it to support ; 29 percent to support e-commerce; 22 percent to support databases; followed by a diverse array of other applications. A Wide Range of Popular Services New kinds of cloud services are emerging quickly. Most people think of IaaS for networking or storage, but there is a range of new cloud-based services that never existed before, such as IaaS for disaster recovery; virtual desktop infrastructure; and backup, recovery, and archiving. Some of the more popular uses of the cloud include: Operational expenses generally can be reduced thanks to the efficiencies of the cloud. By working with a cloud provider, you effectively are leveraging their economies of scale, and that should benefit your bottom line. . The cloud can allow companies to eliminate the headaches of managing their platform, so they can focus on value activities that can differentiate their business. A perfect example is Hosted Exchange, where businesses can run and manage their in the cloud using Microsoft Exchange. Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS). The cloud provides a safe, reliable way to back up data. Many companies are turning to the cloud for backup because it reduces management complexity, shortens backup windows, provides faster restores, and lowers the cost of storage. Compute. With the cloud, companies can instantly get the processing power they need to run their business, providing the infrastructure and uptime to maximize the effectiveness of all their business applications. Firewalls. Firewalls are a costly and important piece of technology. Cloud-based firewalls significantly lower that cost, while ensuring a company has the most up-to-date protection. Load Balancers. This technology ensures that operations run smoothly by automatically distributing workloads across servers and other resources. Colocation. Some companies turn to cloud vendors for high-tech real estate. Colocation is an outsourced data center space, where they can operate their company-owned hardware and software. The primary selection criterion is availability (meaning applications and other technology are up and running when they are needed), according to a study by the Uptime Institute, 7 an organization focused on improving data center performance and efficiency through collaboration. The primary drivers of outsourcing to colocation providers are ability to scale geographically and reduction of costs. 4 5

Fading Barriers All these new services would have limited use if companies were too concerned about trusting their data, applications, and infrastructure to a third party in order to use the cloud. However, a new study from Evolve IP 8 found that, overall, concerns about moving to the cloud have decreased as companies gain more knowledge of it. Many of the barriers to adoption that arose when people first started using the cloud are no longer major stumbling blocks. Security. Historically, security concerns have been the top barrier to cloud adoption. Now companies are realizing that cloud providers often have better security than their in-house operations because cloud providers have a higher degree of expertise and the latest security technology at their disposal. Indeed, Mark Bowker, a senior analyst for the Enterprise Strategy Group, says he s seen a change where IT executives no longer view security as having substantially different issues for cloud providers as on premises. The question has shifted from whether the cloud is secure in a generic sense to whether a specific cloud provider implements proper security. This could mean locating its data center in a geographic zone with low risk for disasters, while maintaining advanced virtual and physical security, such as biometric systems and video surveillance. And because of cloud providers economies of scale and 24/7 focus on security, they have the ability to do security better than smaller, in-house staffs. Reliability/availability. IT directors are realizing their own operations are not immune to downtime and, in fact, cloud providers have better resources and safeguards to ensure that the information, applications, and resources employees and customers need can always be accessed. This is particularly true when hosted in a certified data center. For example, a report from the Institute for Health Technology Transformation 9 notes, Cloud services have less downtime than the typical healthcare system does, because this is their core competency. They also provide a superior Concerns about moving to the cloud have decreased as companies gain more knowledge of it. Many of the barriers to adoption that arose when people first started using the cloud are no longer major stumbling blocks. disaster recovery and backup resource. For example, healthcare providers are starting to believe in the reliability of cloud vendors, and some view hosted backup as a cost-effective alternative to on-premise backup. The same is true for most other industries. All Data centers are not Created Equal As general barriers fade in importance, analysts say companies should focus on how a particular cloud vendor can address their specific needs and concerns. An important method for comparing vendors is the Tier Classification System for data centers from the Uptime Institute. 10 This standard provides third-party validation of data center critical infrastructure in terms of uptime or performance. The system uses four tiers (I-IV), which are progressive, meaning that each tier incorporates all the requirements of the lower tiers. Tier I: Basic Capacity. A Tier I data center provides the basic infrastructure to support information technology beyond the office center, including a dedicated space for IT systems, an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), dedicated cooling equipment that doesn t shut down, and an engine generator to protect IT functions from extended power outages. Tier II: Redundant Capacity Components. A Tier II facility adds redundant power and cooling components, such as UPS modules, chillers or pumps, and engine generators. Tier III: Concurrently Maintainable. A Tier III facility requires no shutdowns for equipment maintenance and replacement, as well as a redundant delivery path for cooling and power beyond the Tier II standards. Tier IV: Fault Tolerance. A Tier IV facility adds fault tolerance, which ensures that a system continues to operate properly even if some of the components of the system fail. 6 7

How to Choose a Cloud Vendor The growth of the cloud, and the advent of IaaS, is providing new opportunities for companies and also changing the role of IT. As IT departments assume the role of internal cloud services broker, they have added responsibilities in terms of vetting cloud providers. Important factors for selecting a cloud provider include: Strong customer support. Good customer support, which includes the ability to tour and audit the facility, is a key element to evaluate when choosing a cloud vendor. According to the Uptime Institute, the tier system provides assurance that the underlying datacenter infrastructure is designed and operated to the customer s performance requirements. Each tier provides a different recognition of uptime availability and risk. For example, a Tier I data center recognizes percent availability and 28.8 hours of annual downtime, while a Tier III center can deliver percent availability and 1.6 hours of annual downtime risk. Only a very limited number of data centers in the United States have a Tier III or IV certification, which offers the highest level of protection. Most of the U.S. centers with Tier III or IV certification are privately used by large businesses or government agencies, so commercial data centers with that level of certification become pretty elite ground. Beyond the Uptime certification, it is important to understand where your service provider stands on the level of data/physical security, the survivability of the structure, and the robustness of the redundancy in their datacenter. There are opportunities for a service provider to go above and beyond with things like the wind speeds the building can withstand, getting redundant power from diverse providers, biometric security, and more. An additional point to consider is if the facility was purpose built for these types of services or if it was an existing structure that was retrofitted. These can be important differentiators when evaluating where you are comfortable with your data residing. Many companies want to see the cloud, Bowker says. They want to be able to drive down the street and talk about their strategy. Anything you make a strategic investment in, you want to be comfortable that you ll have the service and support you want. Many companies want a local cloud provider that offers world-class support. A cloud provider that takes a consultative approach provides the flexibility necessary to reap the full benefits of the cloud. Financial Commitment. You want to be sure your provider can make the investments needed to provide the levels of service you expect. For most providers, this is not a question of whether they will be in business three years from now; it is a question of whether they are using the current generation equipment at all times and staffing the management and support of the services at the levels needed to be best-in-class. Providing cloud infrastructure services is very capital intensive and requires highly talented resources to run it properly. Some providers may look to cut costs in either area to improve their margins, and both are areas you will want to understand well. What equipment are they running today? Do they keep spares on site? What is their refresh schedule? What is their staffing model for their data center? The answers to these questions and many others should be critical factors in your decision making. 8 9

in the storage capacity needed, application support required, need for administrative tools and functionality, bandwidth availability to meet data volume, number of users, security features required, customer support, uptime, and payment models (freemium versus paid subscription). Enterprise customers need a provider that is adept at handling specific enterprise needs. The cloud and the choice of a cloud vendor is indeed a strategic investment. Carefully evaluate how the cloud can help you stay ahead of the competition, and choose a cloud provider who is committed to being a partner in helping you meet your business objectives. C Spire: A Powerful Cloud Partner Connectivity into the cloud Access to your cloud is only as good as your connection to the internet. Getting robust connectivity from your cloud provider mitigates risk and drives synergies. Check to see whether the cloud provider offers these capabilities: Multiple redundant fiber rings and diverse providers Internet/network options up to 10Gbps symmetrical connections Supports synchronous and asynchronous environments Supports active-active configurations Enterprise-level Security/Functionality The fundamental level of service you can receive from a cloud partner starts with the data center housing your infrastructure, period. And given that data is one of a company s most important assets, you want to be sure a cloud provider has stringent safeguards for protecting that data and ensuring that the data, applications, and technology are available. One of the key selling points of a cloud provider is they can afford to have the best uptime and security because of their scale and efficiency in using computing resources. According to a recent IDC white paper 4, There are obvious distinctions between the needs of consumers and enterprises, which can be seen C Spire Business Solutions provides turnkey, managed technology solutions for businesses. Its Tier III+ data center is purpose-built to be the best option for intelligently managing mission-critical data infrastructure and enterprise applications.
