TODAY S READINGS First Reading -- The Lord is not deaf to the wail of the orphan, nor to the widow when she pours out her complaint (Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18). Psalm -- The Lord hears the cry of the poor (Psalm 34). Second Reading -- The Lord will rescue me from every threat (2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18). Gospel -- All who exalt themselves will be humbled; all who humble themselves will be exalted (Luke 18:9-14). GOD S LOGIC IS NOT OURS Nobody will ever mistake the Bible for a logic textbook. We need to remember this when we approach today s readings. How can a God who knows no favorites have a chosen people, or give us the disciplines of fasting and almsgiving and then instruct us not to talk about them? God, in love and tenderness, knows how quickly we can get into a rut. The Spirit inspires passages like the instruction from Sirach and the parable in Luke to help drag us out of the rut of thinking that God s ways are our ways. Sirach poetically uses contrast to answer the question, Whose prayer will reach the lofty clouds of heaven? The answer? Those who are lowly on earth. Jesus amplifies this in his parable of the Pharisee and the publican. It is Spirit-inspired illogic that communicates today s message: God hears the voices of those who are ignored by the rest of the world. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Friday s Solemnity of All Saints and Saturday s Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed fit well at the beginning of November. The liturgical readings of this final month in the Church year are keyed to the end of time and the fulfillment of Jesus saving acts. Nowhere is this more fully celebrated than in Mexico, where November 2 is the Day of the Dead. Missionaries moved an ancient Aztec festival from midsummer to November, linking the festival to Christian themes. Today, it is a time for remembering the dead and celebrating the continuity of life, principally by festive picnics in cemeteries. There are special foods and games, and people socialize with other families and tell favorite stories about their dear ones. The sweetness of life is honored by sugary desserts and treats. Flowers, music, lights, and feasting assure that the day is not at all morbid. Traditionally, the day begins with Mass, a procession to the cemetery, and a morning feast. Most families have a special dinner with the pan de muerto, or bread of the dead. A toy skeleton is baked into the loaf, and the one who bites into it is considered lucky indeed. The dead are not feared, but deeply loved, and this joyful family feast points both to age-old customs and Resurrection faith. 4 Ngày 27 Tháng 10 Năm 2013 Chúa Nhật 30 Thường Niên Năm C Nâng mình lên sẽ bị hạ xuống Phúc Âm Luca 18: Đức Giêsu còn kể dụ ngôn sau đây với một số người tự hào cho mình là công chính mà khinh chê người khác: 10 Có hai người lên đền thờ cầu nguyện. Một người thuộc nhóm Pharisêu, còn người kia làm nghề thu thuế. 11 Người Pharisêu đứng riêng một mình, cầu nguyện rằng: Lạy Thiên Chúa, xin tạ ơn Chúa, vì con không như bao kẻ khác: tham lam, bất chính, ngoại tình, hoặc như tên thu thuế kia. 12 Con ăn chay mỗi tuần hai lần, con dâng cho Chúa một phần mười thu nhập của con. 13 Còn người thu thuế thì đứng đàng xa, thậm chí chẳng dám ngước mắt lên trời, nhưng vừa đấm ngực vừa thưa rằng: Lạy Thiên Chúa, xin thương xót con là kẻ tội lỗi. Tôi nói cho các ông biết: người này, khi trở xuống mà về nhà, thì đã được nên công chính rồi; còn người kia thì không. Vì phàm ai tôn mình lên, sẽ bị hạ xuống; còn ai hạ mình xuống sẽ được tôn lên. Xin cho chúng con biết khiêm nhường như Chúa để được rót đầy ân sủng và yêu thương. Ai nâng mình lên sẽ bị hạ xuống là một giáo huấn rất quan trọng nên thường được Chúa Giê-su đề cập nhiều lần trong Tin Mừng bằng nhiều hình thức (Lc 18,14. Lc 14, Mt 23,12) Lần nầy, để minh hoạ cho bài học của mình, Chúa Giê-su nêu lên hai nhân vật. Người biệt phái rất tự phụ, vênh vang phô trương công đức của mình. Ông tự cho mình thánh thiện, đạo đức và tự đặt mình lên trên những người khác: Xin tạ ơn Chúa vì con không như bao kẻ khác, không tham lam, không bất chính, không ngoại tình, không như tên thu thuế kia! Rồi ông phô trương thành tích đạo đức của mình: Con ăn chay mỗi tuần hai lần, con dâng cho Chúa một phần mười thu nhập của con. Quả là ông nầy có nhiều thành tích tốt lành ít ai bì kịp. Thế nhưng ông không nhận được ơn lành của Thiên Chúa vì ông ta như chiếc bình đầy tràn, đầy kiêu căng tự phụ, nên chẳng còn chỗ cho Chúa rót ân sủng vào. Trong khi đó, người thu thuế vốn biết thân biết phận tội lỗi của mình nên chỉ đứng ở đằng xa, thậm chí không dám ngước mặt lên, chỉ biết đấm ngực mà nguyện rằng: Lạy Thiên Chúa, xin thương xót con là kẻ tội lỗi. Anh nầy đến với Chúa như một chiếc bình trống rỗng, nghĩa là với lòng thống hối khiêm cung và khao khát được Chúa tuôn đổ ơn tha thứ nên anh đã được Thiên Chúa rót đầy tình yêu thương và sự thứ tha. Với dụ ngôn nầy, Chúa Giê-su ghi sâu bài học đáng nhớ nầy vào tâm khảm chúng ta: Phàm ai tôn mình lên sẽ bị hạ xuống; còn ai hạ mình xuống sẽ được tôn lên. (Lc 18,14) Mẹ Maria cũng đã cảm nghiệm được bài học quý báu nầy và nhắc nhở chúng ta: Chúa giơ tay biểu dương sức mạnh, dẹp tan phường lòng trí kiêu căng. Chúa hạ bệ những ai quyền thế. Ngài nâng cao những kẻ khiêm nhường. Chúa làm như thế không phải vì Chúa thiên vị người nầy chê bỏ kẻ kia, nhưng vì, cũng như người ta không thể rót thêm nước vào một ly đã đầy tràn, thì Thiên Chúa cũng không thể rót thêm ân sủng cho những tâm hồn kiêu căng tự mãn. Đầy thì đổ Một hôm khi cùng với học trò vào thăm miếu của vua Hoàn Công, nước Lỗ, Đức Khổng Tử thấy có cái lọ đứng nghiêng. Ngài nói với môn sinh: Ta nghe nói vua Hoàn Công có một vật quý để răn dạy người đời. Đó là một chiếc lọ đặc biệt, khi để trống không thì nghiêng, khi đổ nước vào vừa phải thì đứng; nếu đổ đầy nước vào thì lọ đổ nhào. Không rõ vật ấy có phải là cái lọ nầy không? Rồi ngài sai học trò đổ nước vào thử xem. Quả thật, mới đầu lọ đứng nghiêng, khi nước được rót vào được một nửa, thì chiếc lọ chuyển sang vị thế đứng thẳng; rồi cứ đổ tiếp cho đầy tới miệng thì lọ đổ nhào. Người đông phương ngày xưa khôn khéo tạo nên chiếc lọ đặc biệt như thế để ghi khắc vào tâm khảm người đời bài học khiêm tốn, bài học trung dung, một cách ấn tượng. Còn người phương tây cũng diễn tả nội dung đó qua một ngạn ngữ khá phổ thông: virtus in medio nhân đức nằm ở mực trung. Người nhân đức là người biết sống trung dung, không bất cập mà cũng không thái quá. Bởi vì bất cứ điều gì quá dư đầy phải sụp đổ. Mặt trời đứng bóng rồi phải xế, Mặt trăng tròn đầy rồi sẽ khuyết, Vật gì thịnh lắm rồi cũng phải suy. (Thái Trạch) Thế nên, Lão tử khuyên chúng ta: Thông minh duệ trí, thủ chi dĩ ngu, Dũng lực chấn thế, thủ chi dĩ khiếp. Bậc thông minh uyên bác thì nên giữ mình bằng khiêm nhường, nhận rằng mình còn nhiều điều chưa biết; bậc anh hào có sức mạnh chấn động thế giới hãy biết bảo trọng bằng cách sống như người nhát sợ Lạy Chúa Giê-su, Chúa dạy chúng con chớ dại dột nâng mình lên vì hễ ai nâng mình lên sẽ phải bị hạ xuống như trường hợp người biệt phái trong câu chuyện trên đây, cũng đừng tranh dành chỗ quan trọng ( như trong dụ ngôn bữa tiệc) kẻo có ngày chủ nhà sẽ mời xuống chỗ cuối. Los primeros mártires cristianos murieron a mano de los monstruos romanos, muchos religiosos medievales se refugiaban en Dios para protegerse de los monstruos internos que los tentaban con sexo, dinero y poder. Y en América muchos como Manuel Chin Sooj se hicieron testigos de la justicia en manos de los monstruos de gobiernos injustos. Los monstruos, en fin no pueden vencer a los santos por eso en Guatemala el martirio de Manuel Chin Sooj, animó a los obispos guatemaltecos a unirse con la carta El clamor de la tierra a los esfuerzos de pobres en búsqueda de tierra y dignidad humana. Recordémoslo cuando meditemos sobre las lecturas de hoy. Cómo puede un Dios que no tiene favoritismo escoger a un pueblo, o darnos la disciplina del ayuno y la limosna y luego instruirnos a no hablar de ello? Dios, amoroso y tierno, sabe cuán pronto podemos caer en la rutina. El Espíritu inspira pasajes como la instrucción de Sirácides y la parábola de san Lucas para ayudarnos a salir de la rutina y comprender que los caminos de Dios no son los nuestros. Sirácides poéticamente usa contrastes para contestar la pregunta: Qué oración llegará hasta las nubes del cielo? La respuesta? La de los humildes de la tierra. Jesús amplifica esto en su parábola del fariseo y el publicano. Es ilógicamente inspirada por el Espíritu que comunica el mensaje de hoy: Dios escucha la voz de los ignorados por el resto del mundo. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE El 31 de octubre muchos se visten de monstruos y al día siguiente, los cristianos celebramos a todos los santos. Es interesante el contraste entre los dos días. Un día recordamos brujas y zombis y al siguiente conmemoramos vírgenes y mártires, religiosos y laicos comprometidos todos con una cosa en común: su amor a Dios, un amor que se hace carne en obras de caridad y justicia.
