2 Challenges Computing Evolution with Challenges Performance Fault tol. Networking Performance Security FT Networking Performance More Scalability Security FT Networking Performance Serial computing 2020 Cluster computing Grid computing Cloud computing Time? computing 3 What is Cloud Computing? 4 4

3 What is Cloud Computing 5 What is Cloud Computing? It s stupidity. It s worse than stupidity: it s a marketing hype campaign Richard Stallman GNU 6 6

What is Cloud Computing? Cloud Computing will become a focal point of our work in security. I m optimistic Ron Rivest The R of RSA 7 7 What is Cloud Computing Cloud computing is a new computing paradigm, involving data and/or computation outsourcing, with Infinite and elastic resource scalability On demand just-in-time provisioning No upfront cost pay-as-you-go That is, use as much or as less you need, use only when you want, and pay only what you use 8 4

Why Now, Not Then? New technology trends and business models Web 2.0 HTML 5 Dealing with the challenges New Application Opportunities Mobile interactive applications Parallel batch processing The rise of analytics Extension of compute-intensive desktop applications Business applications (?) 9 So, if cloud computing is so great, why aren t everyone doing it? Clouds are still subject to traditional data confidentiality, integrity, availability, and privacy issues, plus some additional attacks

Companies are still afraid to use clouds [Chow09ccsw] Confidentiality Anatomy of fear Will the sensitive data stored on a cloud remain confidential? Will cloud compromises leak confidential client data (i.e., fear of loss of control over data) Will the cloud provider itself be honest and won t peek into the data? Integrity How do I know that the cloud provider is doing the computations correctly? How do I ensure that the cloud provider really stored my data without tampering with it?

Anatomy of fear (Cont d) Availability and reliability Will critical systems go down at the client, if the provider is attacked in a Denial of Service attack? What happens if cloud provider goes out of business? Privacy issues raised via massive data mining Cloud now stores data from a lot of clients, and can run data mining algorithms to get large amounts of information on clients Increased attack surface Entity outside the organization now stores and computes data, and so Attackers can now target the communication link between cloud provider and client Cloud provider employees can be phished 13 Anatomy of fear (Cont d) Auditability and forensics Difficult to audit data held outside organization in a cloud Forensics also made difficult since now clients don t maintain data locally Legal quagmire and transitive trust issues Who is responsible for complying with regulations (e.g., SOX, HIPAA, GLBA)? If cloud provider subcontracts to third party clouds, will the data still be secure? 14 7

More for Business Applications Scalability What to scale? How much to scale? How to scale? Which scaling strategy? Many business cloud systems failed due to scalability. Elasticity Economics of elastic cloud-based applications Client applications Mobile devices Smart phones Workstations More and more Service level agreement Cloud infrastructure SLA Cloud application SLA This is very crucial for business applications CRM/ERP applications need to support it What it should include? 16 8

and more: The Big Data Management Challenge Many business applications have big data Particular technologies and tools need to be applied for big data. Does the cloud handle big data Hadoop How big data drop the performance Where to store the data? Traditional DBs New DBs! In-memory technologies 17 The Big Data Management Challenge 18 9

10 Final quote [Cloud Computing] is a security nightmare and it can't be handled in traditional ways. John Chambers CISCO CEO Where to focus Mainly applications SaaS Mainly middleware PaaS Mainly hardware: mature IaaS 20

PaaS Premature Has many challenges Yet, far to be ready for business applications Where most of the effort should be The big players are there Amazon, Google (AppEngine), Microsoft (Azure), SAP, and more 21 Conclusion Business applications and systems need to be reconsidered in the cloud Yet, business cloud systems far to be ready Vision: business cloud systems will attract many Clients, providers, scientists, etc
