1 Arts, Business, Behavioral Sciences, & Social Sciences Division Criminal Justice Department CRIJ 1301 Introduction to Criminal Justice Fall 2015 Course Title: CRIJ 1301: Introduction to Criminal Justice Professor/Office/Phone: Valerie Krizan / Room 9127 / or Credit Hours and Prerequisites: Three (3) credit hour course Prerequisite: College Level Readiness in Reading AND Writing Course Texts: CJ3 Gaines/Miller Cengage Learning Class Schedule: Monday through Friday: 1:00-1:45 p.m. Room 9127 Course Description: This course provides a historical and philosophical overview of the American criminal justice system, including the nature, extent, and impact of crime; criminal law; and justice agencies and processes. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1) Describe the history and philosophy of the American criminal justice system. 2) Explain the nature and extent of crime in America. 3) Analyze the impact and consequences of crime. 4) Evaluate the development, concepts, and functions of law in the criminal justice system. 5) Describe the structure of contemporary federal, state, and local justice agencies and processes.

2 Attendance Policy This class will follow MISD Student Handbook guidelines. Attendance to all classes is expected. Should you anticipate an absence, please notify the instructor in advance. An excessive number of absences will prohibit the successful completion of this course. Make-Up Work MISD Student Handbook states that students have one day for each day absent to complete make-up work (see student handbook). If you know that you will be absent, notify your teacher for assignments to cover the dates absent. It is not always possible to get assignments on short notice, but the teacher will do her best. If a scheduled quiz or test is missed, upon returning to the class the student must arrange a time before school or after school with in 2 class days. If there is a short term assignment due on the date of the assignment, then the student must turn-in the assignment upon returning to class. If any long term assignment, assignments given at least two weeks in advanced, or essay is due on the date of the absence, that assignment is still due on the original due date even if the student is absent. If any student who misses an assignment due to ISS, AEP, or a school activity, he or she is still responsible for work that was complete in class the day of his or her absence. If you cannot attend class, me (the instructor) as soon as you know of your absence. That way, we can keep in contact despite your absence. It is your responsibility to learn from your fellow students what you missed and if there have been any changes to the assignments. If you've asked your fellow students and you're still confused, feel free to me before or ask me after class for clarification after you have spoken to other students. You may also check the teacher s website for additional information. Professors should clearly document how the student's actions violated the academic integrity policy, how a grade was calculated, and the actions taken. Class Cancellations Classes will only be cancelled when MISD cancels class. In case of inclement weather or other emergencies, students should listen to radio and television stations for information regarding school closings. 4 Course Schedule The below schedule is a tentative schedule and subject to change. The instructor reserves the right to update the course policies, assignments, and schedule at any time. Changes may be made throughout the semester. These changes will be for your benefit. If I see that as a class we need additional lessons or assignments not originally on the syllabus, the schedule will change. It is your responsibility as a student to keep up with changes as they are announced. (If you are absent, ask another student in our class specifically for updates to our schedule. See attendance policy above for further information.) Students are expected to have read the textbook assignments prior to class and should be prepared to discuss their readings in class. Students may be called on to participate in any class. There will also be a number of in-class debates of current events topics, so some outside reading may also be required in order to prepare for class. Students are to present a critical perspective paper of criminal justice movie myths and realities from two different full length movies that have been shown or are currently showing in movie theaters. There must be a minimum of five (5) supporting references, including the movies themselves, found on the Works Cited page. Correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation are imperative. Paper must be in APA format, and not MLA. Note: The five to eight pages refer only to the content pages and do not include the cover page or works cited page. Late papers: Twenty (20) points will be deducted from a paper that is submitted late. This is a one-time deduction regardless of how late a paper is submitted.

6 NOTE: Papers that do not meet the minimum content length requirement of five (5) full pages, or exceed the maximum length requirement of eight (8) pages, or do not have the minimum of five (5) references will receive a maximum grade of fifty (50). Withdrawal Policy: Except for extraordinary circumstances, students will not be dropped from the course for lack of observed participation or failure to take quizzes or exams. It is the student's responsibility to notify the Registrar of their intent to drop a course. Keep in mind that the State of Texas has instituted a maximum limit of six drops while undertaking your baccalaureate degree, regardless of how long it takes or how many colleges in the state you attend in the process of completing it. A student may be dropped from any course if LSCS determines there is a misuse of fiduciary allocations a student has received, plagiarism, or other fraudulent behavior associated with the course.
