4 Handbook Introduction: This handbook was developed to serve as a guide and resource for students considering enrollment in, or already enrolled in the Dietetics Program (DP) at Oregon State University (OSU). This document should be considered as a companion to the OSU Code of Ethics and General, Administrative and Student Policies and Procedures Manual, which can be accessed via and is available in all university offices. The information, policies, and procedures included in this document are meant to be helpful and supportive. Students are expected to review and follow the policies relating to the OSU DP and regarding university wide student conduct. This handbook is revised annually and each new edition fully replaces previously published versions. The most recent version of the handbook is posted on our Dietetics web site at and on the Blackboard Organizational sites for Dietetics and Pre-dietetics. Access to the blackboard sites content is granted once a student is accepted into OSU and declares the Pre-dietetics or Dietetics option. A hardcopy of this handbook is kept in the Dietetics Program Directors office. All students are encouraged to review the policies and procedures relating to the DP including grade policies, example curriculum plans, Pre-dietetics requirements, requirements for application to the OSU Dietetics Professional Program, student resources, faculty information, and program costs among others. This handbook includes the OSU DP mission, goals and objectives as submitted to the Commission on Accreditation of Dietetic Education (CADE), as a part of the 2011-reaccreditation requirements. Reaccreditation of the OSU DP occurs every 10 years. OSU has a long and unbroken history as an accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) by (CADE) and the American Dietetics Association (ADA). Accreditation requirements are listed on the CADE web site at A copy of the Self-Study reaccreditation document is kept in the Dietetics Program Directors office. Students are encouraged to become familiar with the ADA Code of Ethics. A copy of this document is found at in Appendix E, on our Dietetics web site and on our Blackboard Organizational sites. The Dietetics Program The OSU Dietetics program was established in 1917 as a two-year program. Today it remains the only dietetics program in Oregon. Since its inception, the Dietetics program has undergone several program name changes and mergers with various departments. It is currently in the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Sciences, in the College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS). Administratively the Dietetics program director reports to Dr. Anthony Wilcox, Chair, Department of Nutrition, and Exercise Sciences, who reports to Dr. Tammy Bray, Dean, College of Health and Human Sciences. OSU awards a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition with an option in Dietetics. Graduate students may also choose to complete the DPD requirements in addition to their graduate program requirements. The CHHS maintains its own Academic Advising program, located in Milam Hall, room

5 Within the OSU Dietetics Program there are seven full-time (1.0 FTE) faculty members teaching required DPD courses. Of these, four are Registered Dietitians (RD) in good standing with CDR. These same four Dietetics Program faculty are all active volunteers at the state and national dietetics association levels. We are currently recruiting for an additional full-time tenure track nutrition faculty member who will bring valuable clinical nutrition skills to the program. As of spring, 2010 OSU began hosting a Dietetic Internship, which participates in the April D&D Digital (Ames, Iowa) dietetic internship matching cycle and currently accepts 4 interns per year. The Dietetic Internship program director is Mary Cluskey, PhD, RD. The Dietetic internship is pursuing CADE accreditation during the spring of In fall 2009, work began on outlining a renovation plan of our departments outdated foods laboratory and classroom spaces. The goal is to create space for developing skills in collaborative learning focusing on food production, nutrition assessment, applied learning, and nutrition education. The project includes three phases. The first phase, the remodeling of our Foods Laboratory, began in the fall of 2010 with completion anticipated in the summer of Planning and fundraising for the final two phases is still in process. In 2011, the CHHS will undergo a restructuring and accreditation process to become the College of Public Health and Human Sciences. The Nutrition major and Dietetics option will become a part of the newly created and named School of Biological and Population Health Sciences. 6 Dietetics Program Mission, Goals, and Program Outcomes Mission Statement: The mission of the OSU Dietetics Program is to promote academic excellence to prepare entrylevel dietetics professionals in the promotion of nutrition, physical activity, and health within the context of human behavior and disease prevention. OSU Dietetics Program Goals: 1. The program will prepare graduates for entry into supervised practice or other postgraduate programs. 2. The program will develop skills and a value for independent and life-long learning. 3. The program will cultivate students prepared to be practitioners who are able to integrate both health promotion and disease prevention into professional practice. 4. The program will attract and retain high quality students. OSU Dietetics Six Program Outcomes: 1. At least 80% of the students who complete the Dietetics Program will graduate within 150% of the expected program completion time. 2. At least 60% of students graduating from the Dietetics Program will apply for supervised practice within 1-year of program completion. 3. At least 80% of those that apply within one year of Dietetics Program completion will be accepted into a supervised practice program. 4. At least 80% of Dietetics Program graduates who completed a supervised practice program will pass the national registration exam on the first exam. 5. Evaluations by Dietetic Interns, Dietetic Internship Directors and Alumni reflect a mean score of > 5.0 (70%)(1-7 scale) for the Dietetics Program adequacy, quality and content. 6. Evaluations of graduating seniors reflect a mean score of > 3.5 (70%)(1-5 scale) for the Dietetics Program adequacy, quality and content. Program data reflecting these Program Outcomes for can be found in Appendix B. Student learning is assessed based on specific CADE identified knowledge requirements and learning outcomes. 7 OSU Dietetics Program Admission, Structure, and DPD Program Requirements Students first enroll at OSU as Nutrition majors in the Pre-dietetics option. After completing the prerequisites, students apply for acceptance into the Dietetics Professional Program and complete their Dietetics option requirements. Pre-dietetics course requirements are given in the table below. The following criteria required for admission into the dietetics program. 1. Completion of all pre-requisite coursework (Pre-dietetics) 2. A GPA of 3.0 or higher overall GPA and in specific Pre-dietetics course work 3. No grade lower than a B- in any nutrition course 4. No grade lower than a C- in any course 5. An unofficial transcript of all college level coursework 6. A up-to-date resume 7. The signature of your academic advisor 8. A Career Interest and Goal Statement 9. Completion of OSU Dietetics Professional Program Application for the year of application. Appendix C contains the Instructions and Dietetics Professional Program Application. Applications are accepted during the first 5 weeks of spring term and students are notified as to acceptance their acceptance into the Dietetics Professional Program (DPP) by the end of the term. Once accepted, the Registrar s office will then be notified to change the student s classification from Pre-dietetics to Dietetics. Acceptance into the DPP allows students to register for upper 7

8 division Dietetics courses in food systems management, medical nutritional therapies, and community dietetics. Students not accepted may reapply during any subsequent spring term. See the Frequently Asked Questions section at the end of this handbook for more information about reapplication to the OSU DPP. A complete list of academic requirements for an undergraduate degree in Nutrition in the Dietetics option is located in Appendix A and online at Dietetic Program Policies and Procedures Upon admission to the DPP, students are required to become student level members in the ADA. Student membership benefits include eligibility for ADA scholarships and financial aid, access to valuable student resources for application to dietetic internships, the Evidence Analysis Library and Tutorial, and other student level educational resources. 8

9 Grade Policy The DPP admission Grade Policy is summarized in the four points listed below. Students must: 1. Earn a 3.0 or higher overall GPA based on 60 or more credit hours from OSU and transferred credits 2. Earn a 3.0 or higher GPA based on the required Pre-dietetic courses 3. Receive no grade lower than a B- in any Pre-dietetics nutrition course 4. Receive no grade lower than a C- in any other Pre-dietetics course. Repeating Courses The university allows students to repeat courses and substitutes new grades for previous grades in the calculation of overall GPA. However, Dietetics students need to be aware that the application process for dietetic internships require that students include ALL grades for all courses taken at all colleges and universities. Occasionally students may need to repeat a course because of a low grade. We encourage students to limit the number of classes they repeat. In the application process for admission into the OSU DPP, all grades for Pre-dietetics coursework are listed including both grades for repeated courses. Initial and repeated course grades are than averaged and the average grade is used to compute the Pre-dietetics GPA. Academic Honesty The Dietetics Program follows OSU policies and procedures regarding academic dishonesty. Academic dishonesty is defined by OSU as an intentional act of deception in which a student seeks to claim credit for the work or effort of another person or uses unauthorized materials or fabricated information in any academic work. The OSU Academic Honesty Policy is as follows: Academic dishonesty in assignments, examinations, or other academic performance is prohibited and considered a violation of the Student Conduct Regulations. It includes "cheating" (the intentional use or attempted use of unauthorized materials, information, or study aids); "fabrication" (the intentional falsification or invention of any information); "assisting in dishonesty or tampering" (intentionally or knowingly helping or attempting to help another commit an act of dishonesty or tampering with evaluation instruments and documents); and "plagiarism" (intentionally or knowingly representing the words or ideas of another person as one s own). Students are advised of University expectations and procedures through the "Academic Regulations" and "Student Life Policy and Regulations" sections of the Schedule of Classes. In addition, through the student orientation program and general advising, students are encouraged to seek honest evaluations, develop sound study habits, maintain integrity in their work, and get study skill assistance when needed. Faculty include the academic honesty policy on all course syllabi provided to students in all classes. ADA Code of Ethics The OSU Dietetics Program promotes and includes the ADA Code of Ethics in course content as a part of its established student learning outcome goals. A copy of the ADA Code of Ethics can be found in Appendix E. Blackboard Organizational Site Upon declaring the Pre-dietetics option, students are provided access to the Blackboard Organizational site for Pre-dietetics students. This site provides valuable information relevant to 9

10 students; including advice on academic success, the student handbook and the ADA Code of Ethics, encouragement to join the Student Dietetics Association as well as providing students the opportunity to communicate with other students and faculty. Upon acceptance into the DPP, students are moved into the Blackboard Dietetics Organizational site. This resource provides extensive information on the process of applying for Dietetic Internships including the Guide to Supervised Practice that contains individual program details. Information about D&D Digital and the matching process as well as the DICAS application system is included on this site. The DP Director maintains both Blackboard Organizational sites with input from other DP faculty. Student Dietetic Association (SDA) OSU has a very active Student Dietetic Association. Active membership in this University recognized club is highly encouraged, as participating students gain valuable leadership, networking and volunteer experience that can be helpful when applying for a dietetic Internship. The SDA maintains a website that includes meeting information and volunteer opportunities. Students of all academic standings are encouraged to run for SDA leadership positions. The SDA web content is found at Graduate, Transfer, and Post-Baccalaureate Students Graduate Program: The OSU Nutrition Sciences graduate program coordinator is Donald Jump, PhD. Applications for graduate school are due in mid January. Students interested in the OSU graduate program are encouraged to review the graduate admission requirements and contact the program coordinator with any additional questions. Prospective graduate students interested in also completing the DPD program requirements should work with their major professor and the Dietetics Program director to design their academic program of study. For specific graduate program admission requirements students are directed to contact the Nutrition Sciences Graduate Program Coordinator through the OSU College of Health and Human Sciences web content at Transfer Students: Undergraduate transfer students are encouraged to join the Pre-dietetics program by the end of their second year to ensure completion of the program within two to three years. Transfer students are advised to consult the OSU articulation tables to evaluate whether previously taken course work will be accepted as part of the Dietetics Program requirements. If the articulation tables do not reflect the students previous college or university curriculum it is the students responsibility to provide evidence of course compliance. Usually this evidence includes the syllabi, course requirements, textbooks used and course catalog description for each individual course. Post Baccalaureate Students; Post-baccalaureate students interested in enrolling in the OSU Nutrition major need a 3.0 GPA on prior coursework before acceptance as Pre-dietetics students. Demonstration of prior academic success in the sciences (chemistry, biology, anatomy and physiology) is preferred. 10

11 Transfer, returning and post-baccalaureate students are required to meet with a College of Health and Human Sciences Academic Advisor upon acceptance into OSU. All students accepted into the Pre-dietetics option must follow the same set of criteria before acceptance into the DPP. Credit for previous course work or substitution for prior work experience must be evaluated and assessed by the DPD Director. There is a seven-year limit to previously taken courses especially for the biological sciences. See Appendix F for a Dietetics Program coursework checklist and transcript evaluation tool for use by transfer and post-baccalaureate students. Transcript Evaluation: The OSU CHHS Academic Advising staff will meet with prospective transfer students and confer via for planning purposes. Prior to admission, prospective students should make use of the OSU articulation tables. The OSU articulation tables reflect other Oregon colleges and universities courses as compared to OSU curriculum. It is the student s responsibility to confirm which courses transfer as DP requirements. Careful attention needs to given to interpretation of the articulation tables. The OSU articulation tables can be accessed at Students seeking credit for courses previously taken from institutions outside of Oregon must provide the DPD director and the CHHS Academic Advising office with a course syllabus, course outline, and record of the text used in the course in order to evaluate their transferability. If course work in more than seven years old, students are likely to be required to repeat courses. Credit for Prior Learning and Experience: It a student has a previous baccalaureate degree and relevant work experience, certain nonnutrition courses may be waived. The Dietetics Program Director makes this decision. International Students: International students must first refer to the Commission on Dietetics Registration (CDR) for information about eligibility to become a Registered Dietitian in the USA. An international transcript evaluation is required for OSU Dietetics admission. Links to those organizations that perform the audits can be found on the CDR website ( as well. It is the prospective student's responsibility to obtain transcript evaluations through CDR. Online Courses: Currently, OSU has no online option for completing the Dietetics Program or any of its core nutrition courses. 11

Seven copies of the verification statement are mailed to each graduate in mid to late July. CADE requires that all DPD Programs retain an original copy of each student s verification statement indefinitely. Verification statements can only be issued for students who completed at least 21 upper division credits of their required DPD nutrition coursework at OSU. Verification statements are required by Dietetic Internships and for professional membership in the ADA and for eligibility to take the DTR exam. See the following handbook section Becoming a DTR for more information on this credential. Students requesting verification statements, for application to supervised practice or for DTR testing may be asked to take courses to update their knowledge and skills before a verification statement is issued if they completed their DPD requirements 5 or more years ago. 12

13 Who is a Registered Dietitian? The Registered Dietitian (RD) is a credential that is offered and managed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). CDR bases its requirements for registration status on the educational and training competencies that have been assessed by the American Dietetic Association as being integral to the practice of dietetics and the protection of the public. In today's fast growing health care field, especially relating to the prevention and treatment of obesity, the RD has a critical seat at the table. What separates RDs from other health care professionals is their expertise in nutritional assessment, evaluation, and dietary prescription. RDs hold a diverse range of positions such as clinical jobs in hospital settings, outpatient care, longterm care, corporate wellness, product development, performance nutrition, and community nutrition program development. RDs have management positions within foodservice, public health, and in community based nutrition programs including state and county Extension programs and the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) supplemental nutrition program. For more information about this career choice, visit the ADA web site at and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics at How to Become a Registered Dietitian (RD)? Becoming an RD is a multistep process starting with a specific set of academic requirements. These academic requirements can only be obtained from a program accredited by CADE to provide a DPD. The curriculum includes the OSU general education coursework needed to meet the baccalaureate core requirements. The Pre-dietetics and Dietetics courses are based on meeting the CADE Eligibility Requirements for Accreditation Status (ERAS), knowledge requirements and learning objectives through courses in chemistry, biology, microbiology, psychology, nutritional sciences, anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, food system management, applied nutrition, nutrition assessment, medical nutritional therapy, nutrition education and counseling. This information is found on the Dietetics web page at The Dietetics option at OSU provides the coursework and preparation to enter a supervised dietetic internship, pass the RD exam, and become a proficient entry-level practitioner. Following completion of their undergraduate program, and receipt of a Verification statement, students apply for acceptance into a post-graduate dietetic internship. Dietetic internships are typically 6-9 months long and include a minimum of 1200 hours of supervised practical experience in a variety of clinical health care, community, foodservice, and management venues. Graduates from OSU's program consistently exceed the national average for placement into accredited dietetic internships. Following the successful completion of the internship, students are eligible to sit for the National Examination for RDs administered by CDR. OSU students consistently exceed the national average for first time test takers pass rates. Passing the national exam allows these entry-level practitioners to use the RD credential and transition into their professional careers. These newly credentials professionals continue their commitment to life-long learning via regularly accruing Continuing Professional Education Units (CPEU s), 75 every 7 years, to ensure they keep pace with the rapidly changing food, nutrition, and health care professions. Licensure of the RD may be offered through the state, but there is a great deal of variability in the professional practice. 13

14 Currently there are two accredited dietetic internships in the state of Oregon, the OSU Dietetic Internship Program (started spring of 2010) and the Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland Oregon. For more information about accredited dietetic internships please visit the student section of the ADA web site at Becoming a Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) Students completing their DPD requirements and earning a Bachelors of Science degree who do not pursue a dietetic internship are able to earn the CDR offered DTR credential. In 2009, CDR developed this third pathway so that students graduating with a BS and a verification statement from an accredited DPD program may sit for the DTR exam without acquiring the practice hours required as a part of the other two pathways. Instructions for applying to take the DTR exam can be found on the CDR web site at Dietetics Student Advising: As Nutrition majors in Pre-dietetics and Dietetics students work closely with their CHHS department Academic Advisor. OSU Course catalogs are accessed online at We require that students first meet with their academic advisors on matters relating to academic planning and to ensure they are progressing in their plan of study as desired. Students are advised to communicate with the Advising Office on details regarding course offerings (terms, days, times and locations) that are projected out further than two terms. The CHHS Academic Advising Office maintains and controls access to students personal and academic files. Once accepted into the DPP, students are also assigned a Professional Advisor from among the Dietetics faculty. Professional Advisors help students prepare to be viable and competitive dietetic internship candidates. We advise students to get to know their Professional Advisors, as well as other nutrition faculty as they will be likely sources for recommendations required as a part of application for dietetic internships. In spring of 2010, the Dietetics Program Director began maintaining professional advising files on all DPP students. 16 Complaints and Grievances Process: OSU encourages the resolution of grievances through informal means and discussion in keeping with the collegial atmosphere of a university. OSU is also committed to a formal procedure for consideration of grievances that are not resolved through informal processes. Students are encouraged to work with their professors and advisors to resolve academic issues and complaints. If direct communication does not resolve the issue, students should arrange to meet with the Dietetics Program Director as soon as possible. The Director will work toward resolution with those involved and, include the department Chair and Dean as is appropriate. If a more formal process is required, the Dietetics Program Director will follow the OSU Grievances Procedures. Academic Advisors and Nutrition faculty communicate and coordinate to address academic and personal issues that could negatively impact a student s success. Appropriate referrals are made to OSU Disability Services for students needing special classroom and testing support. Academic dishonestly or other disciplinary actions are handled in accordance with the OSU policies and procedures previously outlined. Every effort is made to help support a student and provide the needed resources for their success while at OSU. OSU Tuition and Fees There are no additional fees associated with acceptance into the OSU Pre-dietetics or Dietetics Program. Students interested in estimated costs for a dietetic internship are encouraged to visit prospective program web sites. 16

Applying for Dietetic Internships The following resources will be the student s best sources for up to date information regarding application to dietetic internships. Students should always defer to individual Dietetic Internship programs web content for current application policies and procedures. American Dietetic Association D & D Digital (Ames, Iowa) Dietetic Internship Centralized Application System (DICAS) Requests for Letters of Recommendations The OSU Dietetics Program faculty will consider writing letters of recommendations for only those students with an overall and DPD GPA of 3.0 or greater. Students are encouraged to get to know their Professional Advisor and other nutrition faculty so that letters of recommendation can reflect more than individual class performance. Requests for letters of recommendation require the Request for Recommendation form found on the Dietetics Organizational Blackboard site. 17

18 Students must carefully follow all of the Request for Letters of Recommendation form instructions and provide all requested materials (resume, unofficial transcripts, information about program student is applying to, and detailed contact information for the letter recipient) with at least a 2- week completion window. Requests for recommendations for Graduate, Medical, Dental, Nursing, Physician Assistants School and employment follow the same procedures A Recommendation Waiver is required when applying for dietetics internships using a paper application system. For students who do not sign the recommendation waiver it will be assumed that they will have access to the recommendations content. Students are strongly encouraged to waive their right to review the recommendation. Financial Aid Resources: Oregon State University The OSU Financial Aid Services can be accessed via This site allows students to monitor their financial aid, learn about state and federal levels of aid, and investigate available scholarships. Deadlines for different forms of aid may vary, therefore students are encouraged to investigate and seek out these resources as soon as possible. American Dietetic Association (ADA) Foundation Financial Aid The American Dietetic Association, through its many association groups, offers a variety of scholarships and educational stipends to individuals pursuing undergraduate and advanced degrees in dietetics or food and nutrition related areas. General scholarship and educational stipend information from ADA Foundation, the dietetic practice groups and affiliate (state) and district dietetic associations can be accessed from the respective group s information listed at (ADA web content, 2010) ADA Foundation Application Availability Applications are accepted the year before the scholarship is applicable. The application can be downloaded from the ADA website from September 2010 to February 15, See instructions below. ADA Foundation Application Submission Date Completed scholarship applications must be postmarked no later than February 15, 2011 and addressed to the attention of the Scholarships Committee, American Dietetic Association, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL

19 ADA Award Notification Date Committee members review all applications. Recipients are selected in May and those selected are notified by the end of June. Information about Admission to Oregon State University (from OSU website) Selection of First Year Students OSU's admission requirements promote student success by assessing student preparedness and academic potential in the unique context of each student's personal experience. Admission assessment will consider all achievements, both academic and non-academic, to enroll students with a broad range of characteristics and perspectives. Considerations include, but are not limited to: academic achievement, creativity, initiative, motivation, leadership, persistence, service to others, intellectual curiosity, exceptional personal or academic recognition, unusual talent or ability, substantial experience with other cultures, and ability to overcome significant challenges. The admissions process consists of a fair and comprehensive review of all applicants to determine potential success at OSU. It is crucial for applicants to carefully complete the application process by providing thorough information. Estimating the likelihood of admission is very difficult without considering the complete application file. Please note that academic performance is not the sole criterion for admission to the university. The university may evaluate a person's behavior and background to determine their ability to maintain the standards of academic and professional conduct expected at the university. An evaluation may take into consideration current behavior and performance as well as previous experiences and actions. Simply qualifying for admission does not guarantee admission. Regular Admission The newest version of the College Board (SAT, formerly Scholastic Aptitude Test) and American College Testing (ACT) exams include a written essay portion. OSU requires students graduating in the year 2006 and beyond to submit scores for the new SAT Reasoning Test including the written essay test, or ACT test scores including the ACT writing exam. 21 Frequently Asked Questions about the OSU Dietetics Program Applying to the Dietetics Professional Program (DPP) How do I apply if I am currently enrolled at OSU as a non-degree seeking student? Contact the OSU Registrar's Office to complete a change in degree status to Degree Seeking. You must declare the Pre-dietetics option and meet the requirements and deadlines for application to the Dietetics Professional Program. Review the Pre-dietetics and Dietetics web components for more information. Getting into Dietetics Do I have to be accepted into the Dietetics Professional Program or can I simply declare it as my major? Yes. You must to be officially accepted into the Dietetics Professional Program. Acceptance requires an application be submitted in the spring term following the completion of your Pre-dietetics requirements. Take time to review the application requirements on our web page under Pre-dietetics. Transferring Courses Do my previous college courses count towards my Dietetics requirements? It depends. Courses that are seven or more years old will not articulate and will need to be retaken. Some consideration is given based on what the applicant has been doing since obtaining His/her first degree. If, after reviewing your transcripts and our Dietetics program requirements you want more information, please contact the Dietetics Program Director, Ingrid Skoog at , or to ingrid.skoog@oregonstate.edu, to discuss your situation. Program length How long will it take to complete the Dietetics requirements as a Post-baccalaureate student? Post-baccalaureate and graduate students will take approximately 2 years to complete their Dietetics requirements. The actual time will depend on the science-specific undergraduate coursework completed before enrollment in pre-dietetics and the time between coursework completion and entry into the Dietetics program. Masters or PhD and Dietetics Options Can I do this as a MS or PhD graduate student instead of a Post-baccalaureate? Yes you can, though space is limited due to the fewer number of students accepted into the OSU graduate program each year. An appointment should be made with advising to explore options as well as arranging visits with potential graduate student faculty. Students applying for acceptance into the graduate program may need to take year of undergraduate nutrition courses before they can take upper level and graduate nutrition courses. The typical application deadline for graduate school is January 15th. A masters program including Dietetics usually takes 3 years to complete and may or may not require a thesis. If you are a health professional with a nutrition background, a transcript evaluation is conducted as a part of your application for Post-Baccalaureate or graduate admission. 21

22 Taking courses at OSU vs. other schools Do I need to take all of my coursework at OSU? No. Many transfer students complete their first two years of course work at other colleges or universities. Students need to check the articulation tables to determine transferability of prior coursework. Keep in mind that most, if not all of the nutrition courses need to be taken at OSU. In addition, one full-term at OSU is required before applying to change from Pre-dietetics to the Dietetics option. Verification Statements Can I obtain a verification statement from OSU if I earned my Dietetics degree at another university? No. A verification statement can only be issued by the institution where you completed your DPD requirements. Our DPD Director may sign a verification statement if a student completed at least 21 credits of upper division DPD required courses at OSU. Even if you have previous coursework or experience in the field, we will require coursework at OSU. If you have completed your DPD requirements elsewhere, that institution's DPD director must sign your verification statements as well. Is it true that a verification statement is only valid for 5 years following completion of a DPD program? No, this is NOT true. In the past the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) would not accept a verification statement that was more than 5 years old as part of an individuals eligibility to take the RD exam. Although this is no longer a finite policy, the OSU Dietetics Program will likely require additional coursework for students seeking a verification statement who graduated 5 or more years ago and who are now planning on applying for dietetic internship placement. Dietetic Internships may exercise a recency of education requirement for all dietetic internship applicants. Even though your university may choose to issue you a verification statement, the Dietetic Internship may choose to NOT accept an applicant based on recency of education. You will need to review program specific materials and/or contact individual programs to determine if they have policies that include recency of education time limits. International Students How can I apply to become a dietitian with an international transcript? International students must first refer to the Commission on Dietetics Registration (CDR) for information about eligibility to become a Registered Dietitian in the USA. An international transcript evaluation is needed for OSU Dietetics admission and the links to those organizations that perform transcript audits can be found on the CDR website. It is the student's responsibility to obtain transcript evaluations through CDR. Other options for nutrition related studies What are my options if my grades were not good enough for acceptance into the Dietetics Professional Program? Students often elect to pursue degrees in Public Health, Exercise Sciences or Human Development and Family Studies. Reapplying to OSU Dietetics Can I reapply for acceptance into the Dietetics program? Yes. Reapplication may involve repeating courses to improve your grades and GPA. While it is possible to repeat classes at OSU, 22
