All or parts of the following sections are included in this Excerpt: IDC Opinion, In This Study, Situation Overview, Future Outlook, Essential Guidance, and Learn More. Also included is Figure 2. I D C O P I N I O N Demand for solutions to test applications on the cloud and for the cloud is rising significantly as high-quality, well-performing software across platforms drives business innovation and competitive positioning. Companies investing in software in an economy that remains volatile with constrained resources and complex deployment challenges are benefitting from and committing to automated software quality (ASQ) software as a service (SaaS) and adaptive testing infrastructure support for and in the cloud. This dynamic market is in its early phases, yet IDC augmented its IDC MarketScape evaluation to include a separate, focused analysis to support users in their strategy and purchase decisions because of the importance of this key, emerging area for ASQ. (We see cloud testing as a "killer app" overall for the ALM arena an obvious use case.) As organizations brand on mobile platforms and deploy for and in the cloud, IDC sees urgent need for approaches to software quality that extend to cloud testing and ASQ SaaS. IDC saw high double-digit growth in 2011 at 33.2% on low numbers in the cloud testing and ASQ SaaS with continued reinvestment. User engagement is driving adoption and uptake in this competitive area for automated software quality. Although the market revenue size is still slight and somewhat early in its evolution, high growth numbers on a small base in 2011 (and also in 2010) are significant. IDC assessed the cloud testing and ASQ SaaS market at $261.4 million for 2011, up from $196.2 million and 28.6% growth in 2010, with a higher growth of 37.8% expected for Cloud testing and ASQ SaaS combined represented around 11.8% of the overall ASQ $2.2 billion market for 2011 Specifically, key growth factors for cloud testing and ASQ SaaS include: Cloud testing and ASQ SaaS enable rapid access to both quality solutions and support infrastructure to sustain complex software sourcing and distributed development. SaaS and cloud testing require fewer resources and less capital expenditure compared with on-premise ASQ and enable faster adoption. 2 Enterprises, small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), and managed service providers leverage cloud testing to lower costs for testing where the investment demand for on-premise solutions is too exorbitant for these companies. Large service and solution providers see SaaS and cloud testing as an opportunity to evolve and bundle new, quality services together to target emerging markets for additional value-add and service offerings. This complements well the quality needs for mobile, ERP, security, and other areas (regulatory compliance, VoIP, etc.). Benefits of self-service infrastructure provisioning are key across areas (cost, adaptability, flexibility, and dynamism). I N T H I S S T U D Y This study uses the IDC MarketScape vendor assessment model to evaluate the cloud testing and automated software quality software-as-a-service market. This research enables analysis of quantitative and qualitative characteristics to provide metrics and context for users evaluating solutions in this area and also to help analyze a vendor's current comparative success in the marketplace and to anticipate vendor evolution. Main user-focus areas for this market include a cloud testing and ASQ SaaS assessment (with functionality for and in the cloud, and test services support and emerging support for multimodal deployment such as mobile and service virtualization). This analysis complements the IDC MarketScape evaluations for enterprise ASQ (for breadth and portfolio ASQ support across areas) and two additional weighted IDC MarketScape views to our assessment (for a total of four IDC MarketScapes): software quality analysis and measurement (SQAM) and ERP testing. The IDC MarketScape for SQAM includes static and dynamic analysis, architectural assessment of design consequences (on software performance, stability, adaptability, and maintainability); and quality metrics for complexity, size, risk, and productivity to establish baselines and to help judge project progress and resource capabilities and address security risks and application portfolio impact. IDC's ERP testing IDC MarketScape includes application-specific testing capabilities and support for quality assessment of composite applications. M e t h o d o l o g y IDC MarketScape criteria selection, weightings, and vendor scores represent wellresearched IDC judgment about the market and specific vendors. IDC analysts tailor the range of standard characteristics by which vendors are measured through structured discussions, surveys, and interviews with market leaders, participants, and end users. The market weightings across both the cloud testing and ASQ SaaS IDC MarketScape analysis presented in this document are based on user interviews, buyer surveys, and the input of a review board of IDC experts in each market. IDC analysts base individual vendor scores, and ultimately vendor positions, in the IDC MarketScape on detailed surveys and interviews with the vendors, publicly available information, and end-user experiences in an effort to provide an accurate and consistent assessment of each vendor's characteristics, behavior, and capability and # IDC

evolving strategy against fixed, standard, weighted criteria. For this cloud testing and ASQ SaaS analysis, excellence is exemplified by vendors that directly supply the broadest, deepest portfolio of cloud testing and ASQ SaaS capabilities, coupled with excellent SLAs, infrastructure management and governance, customer service, and evolving strategies for multimodal deployment (IDC sees a confluence between cloud and mobile increasingly). S I T U A T I O N O V E R V I E W I n t r o d u c t i o n This study evaluates the principal vendors participating in the cloud testing and ASQ SaaS areas (at a minimum, vendors must offer ASQ SaaS directly or via partners to be evaluated in this IDC MarketScape). At a time of economic disruption, businesses require the capability to be able to effectively test and optimize the software that drives business innovation, and augmenting test infrastructure with testing in cloud is an obvious benefit at a time of constrained resources with ongoing economic volatility. Companies have little leeway for poor software quality as they push forward competitively. Resources for both development and quality assurance and quality control remain highly constrained. Companies must make appropriate test automation strategy decisions for their businesses in response to both dramatically increased technology complexity and severe competitive and innovation pressures. IDC's cloud testing and ASQ SaaS evaluation is based on a comprehensive framework and a set of parameters to assess vendors relative to one another and to those factors expected to be most conducive to user demand and to market and competitive success for the short term and long term. Overall, cloud testing and ASQ SaaS excellence for this research must encompass strong capabilities for testing in the cloud and cloud test infrastructure management and dynamic provisioning, SaaS options for ASQ, and testing of target cloud applications. With a rise in complex sourcing, we increasingly see the need for metrics and service-level agreements (SLAs) that incorporate visibility into application performance in the cloud. This can facilitate evaluation of internal and external resources with testing metrics, while improving assessment of consistent quality execution for successful software and effective software performance optimization with use of adaptive cloud infrastructure. In the cloud testing and ASQ SaaS IDC MarketScape chart, the strategies axis represents a three- to five-year span and future perspective, while the capabilities axis represents current product and go-to-market execution (see Figure 1). Given pressing user needs currently, this cloud testing and ASQ SaaS IDC MarketScape weighs current capabilities higher than future strategies for the cloud testing and ASQ SaaS view (with a 60:40 split). The market share of each vendor is indicated by the size of the circle representing the vendor. This study is made up of four key sections. The first is a situation overview of the market factors driving and challenging cloud testing and ASQ SaaS adoption. The second section provides a cloud testing and ASQ SaaS definition, description, and weighting for the characteristics IDC analysts believe enable a successful cloud 2013 IDC #

testing and ASQ SaaS line of business with responsiveness to key user demands. For in-depth analysis and graphics related to related ASQ IDC MarketScapes, please see the three related documents: IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Enterprise Automated Software Quality Vendor Analysis Driving Multimodal Innovation with Testing Portfolio Strategies (IDC #236616, October 2012); IDC MarketScape: Software Quality Analysis and Measurement Vendor Analysis Leveraging Code Analysis to Drive Quality and Innovation (IDC #237075, November 2012); and IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Testing Vendor Analysis Enabling Business Application Quality with Targeted Testing Strategies (forthcoming). These characteristics are based on buyer and vendor surveys and analyst observations of the evolving market and industry practices. The third section is a visual aggregation of multiple vendors into a chart, accompanied by written analysis. This section concisely displays and quantifies scores of the 11 reviewed vendors weighted for cloud testing and ASQ SaaS excellence including broad and deep specific functionality, SLAs, and cloud management support. The focus for this cloud testing and ASQ SaaS IDC MarketScape (and for the companion ASQ IDC MarketScape documents) was chosen based on IDC's assessment of evolving market demand and user input. Additional ASQ perspectives may be needed and are available on a custom basis. Context and analysis for these ASQ views are key; however, a single view (or narrow combination of views) by itself is inadequate for ASQ purchase decisions. These decisions must be made in the context of user organizational and process maturity; most pressing immediate and long-term demand and gap assessment; and dialogue with solution providers, analysts, and user references (and communities) with comparable needs. The fourth section provides vendor profiles, overall product analysis, and a separate usercontext analysis for each vendor (summarizing findings from IDC reference discussions for each of the evaluated vendors). The document concludes with IDC's essential guidance to provide support for users in establishing effective cloud testing and ASQ SaaS strategies, setting evaluation criteria for vendor purchase decisions with the perspective of their targeted or broader ASQ portfolio needs and organizational maturity. It also includes strategic direction for the ways in which vendor participants can and should support continued growth and improvement of offerings to address pressing user demands in an economy that remains disruptive and unpredictable, even as businesses must reinvest. I D C M a r k e t S c a p e V e n d o r I n c l u s i o n C r i t e r i a IDC structured its approach to inclusion for vendors in the cloud testing and ASQ SaaS category based on the strength of overall ASQ capabilities, on revenue share in part and for differentiated position and capabilities in emerging markets of concern, and focus for IDC customers for vendors with less revenue and a targeted ASQ focus, such as excellent cloud testing capabilities, service virtualization, and/or ASQ SaaS offerings. Specifically: 4 # IDC

Vendors assessed in this cloud testing and ASQ SaaS IDC MarketScape include CAST, Compuware, HP, IBM, Keynote, Micro Focus, Microsoft, Parasoft, Skytap, SmartBear, and SOASTA. Parameters for including vendors in this research analysis were the top vendors by revenue and by differentiated product capability in the key emerging areas under evaluation cloud testing/asq SaaS. Consequently, based on the weightings, there are several criteria that are most influential in predicting success (for definitions of these areas, refer back to Tables 1 and 2): Functionality of offering: For both the strategy and capability section of the cloud testing and ASQ SaaS IDC MarketScape, functionality remains a key driver, though we expect that to be somewhat less important over time as the market matures further (so the future strategy weighting is less for this category). IDC's cloud testing ASQ SaaS view weights broad, cloud testing and ASQ SaaS functionality and cloud testing very significantly. We also see coordination and synergy with mobile testing capabilities along with other emerging technologies as growing in significance with increased user demand. Cost management: Cost savings is key in a difficult economy and a driver for ASQ adoption, particularly for cloud testing/asq SaaS/on demand). Process and organizational change are the primary barriers to successful implementation for ASQ. Application life-cycle management integration with ASQ and process capabilities (including agile): With the advent of complex sourcing, we see organizations seeking the benefits of visibility and effective ALM from requirements through to the handoff to deployment (and as context for service management as well). Increasingly, organizations are shifting to agile approaches to development, which demand coordination across what may otherwise be fractured approaches. Pricing and cost competitiveness: In a difficult economy, pricing models (including maintenance for on-premise) and cost competitiveness make the difference between buying a solution, upgrading, or not making the investment. This is of importance now somewhat for cloud testing and ASQ SaaS decision makers, and particularly in making alternative product delivery choices for SaaS/on-demand users. While customers investing in cloud testing and ASQ SaaS tend to be less cost conscious, it remains, but as a lesser factor. Delivery model: Closely related to pricing is delivery model how are vendors providing their ASQ solutions? This area encompasses consideration of cloud testing, ASQ SaaS, and on-demand hosting options, as well as concurrent user, alternative payment options, and appropriate, targeted packaging, and processes to facilitate user adoption. While an important factor for cloud testing and ASQ SaaS increasingly, this area is weighted most heavily for IDC's SaaS/on-demand ASQ view. Customer service: Customer service and vendor commitment to deployment success is key particularly for the cloud testing and ASQ SaaS solutions (which can require hand-holding and consistency for successful on-premise 2013 IDC #

deployments), and somewhat for cloud testing/asq SaaS areas (where vendors provide ASQ as a service or hosted option but where process change is essential to successful adoption). SaaS/on-demand and cloud testing capability offerings: This is weighted most highly for this assessment, to which the analysis maps closely. Innovation: In a dynamic market, innovation puts vendors in a position to address evolving user needs, such as mobile, agile, collaboration, and social business technologies. This is weighted well for all categories the enterprise ASQ, cloud testing/asq SaaS, SQAM, and ERP testing. Growth execution: For an emerging market and in a difficult economy, execution on growth becomes a factor in determining ongoing viability. ASQ providers must be focused on not only satisfying current technology buyers but also expanding presence with the partner channel and with prospects seeking emerging capabilities and services related to the technology. This approach is relevant to help ensure maximum successful adoption and value of the technology. The previously discussed areas represent the most important success criteria for ASQ business success for this cloud testing and ASQ SaaS IDC MarketScape. IDC uses this perspective and analysis to help focus users in their cloud testing and ASQ SaaS and other evaluations and purchasing choices and to encourage vendors to evolve their capabilities and strategies that will most improve or impact their business by increasing the value clients receive from the technology and ultimately increasing customer satisfaction with the technology. IDC's research methodology uses a rigorous scoring methodology based on both qualitative and quantitative criteria that result in a graphical illustration of each vendor's position within a given market. The capabilities score measures current vendor product, go to market, and business execution in the short term. The strategies score measures alignment of vendor strategies with customer requirements in a three- to five-year time frame. Vendor market share is represented by the size of the circles. In Tables 1 3, IDC visually presents the scoring weighting across the four ASQ IDC MarketScape areas: enterprise ASQ, cloud testing/asq SaaS, software quality analysis and measurement, and ERP testing. The IDC vendor assessment for the enterprise automated software quality market represents IDC's opinion on which vendors are well positioned today through current capabilities and which are best positioned to gain market share over the next few years. Positioning in the upper right of the grid indicates that vendors are well 6 # IDC

positioned to gain market share. For the purposes of discussion, IDC divided potential key strategy measures for success into two primary categories: capabilities and strategies. Positioning on the y-axis or capabilities axis reflects the vendor's current capabilities and menu of services and how well aligned it is to customer needs. The capabilities category focuses on the capabilities of the company and product today, here and now. Under this category, IDC analysts will look at how well a vendor is building/delivering capabilities that enable it to execute its chosen strategy in the market. Positioning on the x-axis or strategies axis indicates how well the vendor's future strategy aligns with what customers will require in three to five years. The strategy category focuses on high-level strategic decisions and underlying assumptions about offerings, customer segments, business, and go-to-market plans for the future, in this case defined as the next three to five years. Under this category, analysts look at whether or not a supplier's strategies in various areas are aligned with customer requirements (and spending) over a defined future time period. SOASTA's offering marries partner cloud computing infrastructure to its automated, analytical global testing platform to help enable a robust, scalable, and lower-cost alternative to traditional performance testing services. It is disruptive not only for its cost-effective value proposition to the enterprise but for the potential validation support it can offer to companies moving to cloud-based or "as a service" models and that may be selling PaaS or SaaS applications, for example. Differentiators for SOASTA are its strength in cloud-based 8 # IDC

testing and evolving mobile support and a free CloudTest Lite version (with support for up to 100 virtual users and single device testing), and an excellent partner program. (Partner integrations in 1H12 include support for HP). SOASTA is considered a Leader in this IDC MarketScape for cloud testing and ASQ SaaS. SOASTA's platform offers a dynamically scalable testing solution to simulate Webbased traffic loads scalable to over 1,000,000 concurrent user sessions as of July Powered by its own internally developed OLAP engine, the platform provides integrated test results and analytics that can enable faster problem identification and resolution. A browser-based user interface has access to an integrated test environment that supports functional test automation and regression testing (via Selenium open source software solution for Web test automation and its own TouchTest technology for Capture/Replay of ios and Android apps), load testing, or Web services testing. A number of protocols are supported including SOAP and RESTful Web services, HTTP(s), HTML, Ajax, and JSON. Within the visual test environment, drag-and-drop interfaces support geographically distributed test teams as they collaborate and reuse test scenarios. Its dashboard aggregates and captures resource usage from multiple sources (hardware, network, load balancer, firewall, Web server, database, application server, content management system, etc.). In addition to its own monitors, performance metrics from leading APM solutions such as CA Introscope, New Relic, and AppDynamics can be aggregated and correlated live into running tests. Testers have flexibility in how they handle data sets following the testing. Capabilities include comparing results across multiple test runs or mining test results to understand how specific message operations perform. As part of its On-Demand offering, customers can receive an hourly load testing service that includes the software, cross-cloud hardware and provisioning, testing support, and real-time analytic and summary reports. While customers can choose to run their own tests in a self-provisioning mode, they can also supply the designated URL to SOASTA, which in turn will run tests on their behalf, with report output as requested at the completion of the tests. CloudTest On-Demand services start at $1,000 per hour. SOASTA's platform can support load generation from more than 500,000 cloud-based servers distributed across locations worldwide. According to SOASTA, this platform enables cross-cloud testing on a number of vendor platforms such as Amazon EC2, IBM Smart Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Rackspace, and Radix. SOASTA's mobile device testing support is provided via SOASTA's TouchTest product, released in January TouchTest is sold separately and is included free in CloudTest Lite for single device testing. TouchTest tracks the location, velocity, and motion of touch-based gestures at the object level from inside the mobile app. This is an alternative to optical tracking offered by some others in the testing market. Validations and image comparisons are set in a visual manner during or after recording, and tests can be run on real mobile devices remotely without jail breaking or tethering. SOASTA's TouchTest offering is based on the number of customer-owned devices under test, and SOASTA is also offering a Private Device Cloud for testing a larger number of employee devices on a private network. TouchTest technology is being offered as a product for use by mobile developers and testers on the SOASTA platform and 2013 IDC #

integrates with CloudTest. CloudTest Lite is a free product and provides testing on a single device free of charge. In September 2012, SOASTA acquired LogNormal, a real user measurement company whose founders also support the open source Boomerang product. SOASTA has integrated the LogNormal technology with the SOASTA platform for real-time analysis, and the resulting product, mpulse, has been generally available since October It can provide views of real mobile and Web users as they access Web and mobile apps. Showing real-time key performance metrics across locations, metrics such as response time and bounce rate can be correlated with impact on revenue and geographic consumer activity. The SOASTA platform can enable users to run browsers and real mobile UI testing simultaneously with protocol-level load testing. This functionality can enable load testing that includes browsers and real mobile devices for augmenting large-scale virtual load tests. The ability to combine browser-based users, mobile users, and virtual users in the same load test allows clients to measure broader performance and end-user experience. As SOASTA runs customer-defined Web scenarios, it can measure browser-side metrics, mobile device performance like battery and memory, and the effects of high traffic on functional actions via its interactive dashboard. SOASTA offers performance testing services as well as CloudTest, TouchTest, and mpulse inside the firewall for self-service access for customers. SOASTA products can be hosted in the cloud or in a colocation center, installed on customer hardware, or shipped as a fully configured hardware appliance. To support the different levels and needs of customer requirements, SOASTA offers the following: CloudTest On-Demand: Turnkey cloud-based performance testing services are offered on an hourly basis. The services include the test engineer(s), software, and cloud-based hardware (and costs). The tests are built and executed by SOASTA with real-time analysis and post test summaries included. On-Demand pricing starts at $1,000 per hour of test execution. CloudTest: Self-service load-testing subscriptions for Web and mobile are offered as Load Server Plans. Designed for internal test teams, customers are provided usage plans according to their testing requirements based on the load test server hours they will consume. Plans are available to test a few times per month to thousand of tests per year. Annual and multiyear plans are available. TouchTest: Mobile testing subscriptions are offered according to the number of actual devices tested. Customers provide their own mobile devices, and SOASTA can provide devices as needed. Bundles to test 10, 25, 50, and more devices are available, and single devices may be added as required. CloudTest Lite: CloudTest Lite is a free version of CloudTest. Downloaded and run as a virtual machine for a single tester on a single system, it provides all core CloudTest capabilities. Load testing to 100 virtual users and a single mobile device are supported. mpulse: Using real user measurement, mpulse collects and aggregates performance and engagement metrics from the user's mobile app or browser. As 10 # IDC

a SaaS offering, it is licensed annually based on the number of page views of a customer's apps and sites. SOASTA User Reference Context IDC conversations with SOASTA customers underscored the benefits to cloud testing options provided for flexible access to scalable infrastructure at reasonable price points and evolution of the CloudTest solution to coordinate with other areas. One retailer with a focus on flash sales for retail and also for luxury travel depends on SOASTA to handle spikes in user access to its Web site, which is core to revenue generation for its business. Ranges in access can go from 100 to 50,000+ customers when new deals are offered, and the retailer must be able to handle this degree of variability or lose significant revenue. This company needs to be able to simulate traffic constantly and evaluate impact of current configurations with flexibility, which SOASTA's CloudTest enables. For functional testing, this company uses Selenium for which SOASTA now has integration. SOASTA provides a Selenium agent in the browser to execute the test; this reference is using SOASTA's Selenium as part of a functional testing framework specific to Selenium created by this reference. The companies IDC spoke with liked lower and concurrent pricing models and hourly rates from SOASTA, the user interface, the reporting, and other capabilities across platforms. SOASTA's emerging partnerships to enable coordination with other lifecycle phases such as mobile, software change, and configuration management and agile with CollabNet; DevOps with New Relic; and Optier and its open source focus with Selenium for functional testing integration; as well as its free load test offering for up to 100 users with CloudTest Lite were also engaging for users with whom IDC connected. The level of company partnership from SOASTA as a smaller vendor and its ability to support new and emerging technologies also was engaging and resulted in successful deployments. One reference in particular liked the business model that suited the young and emerging company, and the company liked the service-level support. Because SOASTA didn't have a legacy of older tools in its portfolio, this reference felt that SOASTA's technology seemed more up to date, with a serviceoriented architecture and specific functionality, the company needed to be packaged appropriately (without requiring it to pay for extra, unneeded functionality). This organization has a SOASTA appliance, with 20,000 virtual users to support scalability. On the enterprise side, the company is set to go to unlimited users but was working through the pricing with SOASTA. The company wanted an appliance to run tests whenever it wanted; it also appreciated the customer centricity of a SaaS approach that helped ensure that SOASTA would work closely with it. Using the appliances in the cloud and on Amazon to execute the tests was helpful, as was SOASTA's on-demand model with Amazon's EC2 to flexibly generate loads for this company. CloudTest kicked off as many virtual users as needed, which were allocated automatically. With SOASTA, the company can go up to 1 million users. This company hands over its scripts and configuration requirements, and then SOASTA executes them on the company's behalf. References appreciated the availability and flexibility of core 2013 IDC #

resources within SOASTA for additional support, as needed. Another option offered is the CloudTest Pro model, enabling references to have their own appliance and providing additional flexibility (although the users are then responsible for their own EC2 costs). The functionality that was most important to these companies was being able to generate the amount of load cloud capability from outside their network with a full view of what was happening, from load balancer all the way down. Cost savings to one organization were around $30,000 in revenue on the first hour of launch for revenue that would have been lost due to problems that would have brought the company's site down (as well as potential for lost customers as well). Overall, the capabilities and flexibility of the SOASTA cloud platform, its pricing and delivery models, and additional partnerships (with third-party product support and integration) were core benefits cited by users. E S S E N T I A L G U I D A N C E We recommend that users evaluate enterprise ASQ solutions in the context of business demand for multimodal development particularly on mobile and cloud, with embedded solutions emerging. Strong ALM platform integration and coordination and execution with global resources are also key factors for enterprise ASQ decision makers. Constrained quality staff in the face of increased complexity and utilization of outside consulting firms to better evaluate software capabilities, performance, and success also demand automation for successful software quality governance. The market remains far from saturated as manual testing remains the standard approach for the majority of companies. Since the economy remains volatile, the efficiencies of automation remain both alluring and an essential element to IT efficiency and competitive opportunity for businesses. The increasing business criticality of software, combined with the emergence of complex, disruptive trends, will continue to drive the need for process improvement for enterprise ASQ specifically and ALM overall. The ongoing demands for complex sourcing including both outsourcers and open source require oversight and management of quality as an imperative. Compliance, security challenges, and the emergence of services and the need for user experience testing on both mobile and existing Web platforms heighten the need for ASQ tools and SaaS as well as emerging cloud and existing virtualization to support and facilitate ASQ adoption and implementation. For enterprise ASQ, cloud testing solutions are emerging increasingly because of adaptability and cost savings (management and security remain user concerns; testing in hybrid private and public cloud settings is a strong initial choice for cloud at many organizations). Understanding the impact of underlying architectural decisions becomes ever more critical in a service-based IT and business environment. We expect the need for software quality analysis and measurement to increase as well during 2H , given the need for deeper analysis for impact of architectural design on software performance and optimization, as well as static and dynamic 12 # IDC

analysis related to those optimization and security and risk mitigation. All of these factors combine for enterprise ASQ offerings. The open source movement is also vitalizing grassroots automated testing implementations. The community meritocracy of open source contributors can undermine revenue for paid solutions on the one hand. It can also lead to hybrid revenue-generation models that begin as open source and evolve to SaaS models. Open source itself needs to be managed, demanding additional automation. We also see open source standards playing a key role to support software creation in emerging markets such as cloud, with the OpenStack initiative for cloud infrastructure standards and GENIVI for in-vehicle infotainment systems that will also generate huge opportunities for software creation. End-user customers struggling with the complexity of this "perfect storm" of market trends look to more effective process, organizational, and enterprise ASQ tools as a way to manage and help ensure quality and security. We will continue to see the emergence of "build, buy, and partner" strategies on the part of larger vendors to create comprehensive life-cycle solutions to target enterprise customers. However, smaller vendors with innovative technologies and business models are creating opportunities in specialized niches for small and medium-sized business IT and in the enterprise primarily through partnerships. Testing for ERP vendors and composite applications will emerge increasingly (multiplatform deployments across traditional, cloud, and mobile environments demand a commensurate ability to test composites). SaaS licensing models that are synergistic can act as an on-ramp to cloud testing and are increasingly emerging as customers seek to decapitalize investments in IT and lower support, implementation, and sunk costs in tools.
