3 The Arborist Corner by Ted Gilbert borough arborist According to the International Society of Arboriculture, how trees affect the value of a property is one of the important considerations in urban forests (streets, parks and private trees). A healthy, attractive urban forest enhances the economic stability of a community by attracting visitors, businesses and new residents. Research has shown that people tend to stay and shop longer when streets are surrounded by trees, and also rent more quickly and have lower vacancy rates. There is research data that establishes this value but we won t get into that here. It is not only the sites with trees that have a higher value, but also applies to properties next to a location with large trees. Homes near greenbelts and parks also have a higher value. Many new residents say that they choose Forest Hills because of its many trees. Visitors to our borough tell us how much they appreciate our tree-lined streets. The borough has been honored by the 24 th consecutive Tree City U.S.A. Award.
