4 EXTRAORDINARY CAREER Meeting the needs of healthcare Chamberlain s administration, faculty and staff are aggressively confronting the pressing issues currently facing the healthcare community. By forging relationships within healthcare organizations, individual facilities, hospital networks, community colleges and national organizations, such as the National League for Nursing (NLN), Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) and the DAISY Foundation, Chamberlain is preparing new nurses for the challenges they will face and enabling practicing nurses to fill key leadership roles and advance care. Addressing the national nursing shortage With healthcare reform generating a need for broader population care, nurses are playing a critical role in shaping the future of healthcare. Since 2004, Chamberlain has supported this movement by graduating over 21,000 * extraordinary nurses from our degree programs and program options. The impending national nursing shortage and the evolving healthcare delivery model mean a world of career opportunities for the nursing field. As a result, the number of unique career paths for nurses is growing and will continue to grow as nurses take on expanded roles in healthcare delivery. Nurses have an unlimited choice of work environments, with options ranging from busy emergency rooms, clinics, hospitals or surgicenters, schools, physicians offices, pediatric environments and the military. They can even pursue research, legal nursing, community service, informatics, a corporate environment or healthcare policy. Whether launching a career or advancing an education, the possibilities for a career in nursing continue to grow over the span of a nurse s career. chamberlain.edu/nursingcareers BE THE DIFFERENCE * Chamberlain College of Nursing graduates since 2004, Chamberlain National Registrar, May CHAMBERLAIN COLLEGE OF NURSING VIEWBOOK 3

12 EXTRAORDINARY COLLEGE More than 125 years of excellence in nursing education The Deaconess tradition began in 19th-century Europe when Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, visited a Deaconess facility in Germany and later applied the concepts she learned to her nursing practice. In 1889, an evangelical pastor in St. Louis, Missouri, proposed establishing healthcare services based on the Deaconess model to address the needs of the local community. Those services evolved into the Deaconess School of Nursing, the Deaconess College of Nursing and finally into Chamberlain College of Nursing. chamberlain.edu/history Single-purpose At Chamberlain College of Nursing, all we teach is nursing. Our focus on the nursing discipline has provided valuable insight into the evolving needs of our students, the profession and our partners in the healthcare arena. chamberlain.edu/about I think it important the Committee should bear in mind to raise the standard, year by year.
