2 Faculty of Arts Teaching at the Faculty of Arts is based on state-of-the-art scholarly research in languages and cultures. In addition to our master's degree programmes in historical-cultural domains, which include Contemporary and Ancient History, Archaeology, Art Studies, Musicology and Cultural Studies, we offer a wide range of master's degree programmes in the field of languages: Linguistics and Literature, Western Literature, Linguistics, Translation, Interpreting, Business Communication and Multilingual Communication. The Faculty also offers five master's degree programmes in language and area studies: Ancient Near East, Arabic and Islamic studies, Japanology, Sinology, and Slavic and East European Studies. We also offer a degree programme in Journalism, which is organised in close cooperation with KU Leuven's Faculty of Social Sciences. The faculty also organises a wide selection of graduate programmes, including advanced master's programmes, a teacher training programme and doctoral studies. While the majority of our degree programmes are hosted in Leuven, several programmes are offered at KU Leuven campuses in Antwerp and Brussels. Each city has its own unique character and charm: bustling university town, groovy metropolis or trendy capital. Situated in the centre of these cities, the campuses of the Faculty of Arts and its study programmes benefit greatly from a wide and diverse range of cultural and educational programmes. The following programmes are taught in English, French or Spanish. They are all organised in Leuven unless otherwise indicated: Master of Linguistics and Literature: English (60 ECTS) The main goal of Master of Linguistics and Literature: English programme is the study of English linguistics and English literature, both in their theoretical aspects and in their applications. Students acquire a solid command of English and a sound grasp of research practices, including systematic methodological training and research experience. Students are trained to actively engage in international research and scholarly debate. 3 Master en langue et littérature françaises (60 ECTS) Le but principal de cette formation est l étude scientifique de la linguistique et de la littérature françaises, tant dans leurs aspects fondamentaux que dans leurs aspects appliqués. Cet objectif suppose d une part que les étudiants atteignent une maîtrise avancée de la langue française, et d autre part qu ils développent la capacité d adopter une démarche scientifique, notamment à travers l étude critique de données issues de la recherche et la réflexion méthodologique. Info et conditions d admission: Master of Western Literature (60 ECTS) The Master of Western Literature programme focuses on the dynamic interactions between various literatures, languages and cultures as well as on intercultural and international aspects of literature. The wide range of national literatures on offer allows you to extend your knowledge of diverse traditions in combinations of your own choosing within a broad comparative and theoretical framework. The core of the programme is a thorough critical examination of the very concept of Western literatures against a more general social, political and cultural background. 4 Máster en Estudios Ibéricos e Iberoamericanos (60 ECTS) Como universidad belga profundamente marcada por su pasado (y presente) multicultural, la KU Leuven ofrece un programa inter - disciplinario con enfoque hacia la interacción entre culturas en el mundo ibérico e iberoamericano. Una parte importante del programa se refiere a los lazos históricos y culturales entre los antiguos Países Bajos y la Península Ibérica (artes visuales, música, arquitectura...). Otras asignaturas se centran en las influencias mutuas entre las literaturas españolas e hispanoamericanas o la variación lingüística en español y portugués, y discuten explícitamente perspectivas teóricas contemporáneas sobre interculturalidad. Para más información y los requisitos de admisión: Master of Advanced Studies in Linguistics (60 ECTS) The Master of Advanced Studies in Linguistics programme aims to provide those who have acquired a general graduate knowledge of linguistics with the professional and creative skills required to carry out research. The programme emphasises sound methodological foundations for identifying and analysing linguistic patterns, a sense of precise and systematic language description, and the ability to develop and criticise theory. This is a joint programme of KU Leuven, UGent, UA and VUB. Each university offers its own major. For more information and admission requirements, see: Postgraduate Programme in Specialised Translation (60 ECTS) The Postgraduate Programme in Specialised Translation is taught both by experts from the Faculty of Arts in Antwerp (KU Thomas More) and by external experts working in education and in the translation programme and localisation industry throughout Europe. The programme offers comprehensive training in and an in-depth under - standing of translation and localisation issues and tools. Participants learn how to master the major tools used by professional translators and localisers, learn workflow management and audiovisual translation and become competent in developing new ideas and practices in the rapidly growing field of translation technologies and specialised translation. 5 Master of Cultural Studies (60 ECTS) The Master of Cultural Studies programme investigates the relationship between art, society and all facets of the media as well as the techniques that shape both art and society. Inevitably and deliberately, its approach is interdisciplinary. The programme attracts students of cultural studies from various backgrounds, all of whom are interested in examining the relations between society and various media in greater depth and detail. Rather than pursuing a clearly demarcated object of study, the programme applies a practice-driven approach to both contemporary and historical phenomena.
