2 It s all about telling a story. Human beings are natural storytellers. Don t listen to certain, saucy proverbs - telling stories is the world s oldest profession. And it is an incredibly important part of UX Design. I blend interface and user experience design with my experience as a content strategist, digital journalist and copywriter to solve people s problems, and to tell stories. Because a business can be great, but it s the stories they tell that elevate a product to an icon, and it s the journey a customer takes, that turns users into lifelong fans. That s what I do. 4 My Process I m a full stack UX designer, and can participate in every part of the process from initial research, all the way through to hi-fidelity mockups and presenting the work. But my greatest areas of strength are designing features and solving problems, and finding great ways to surface content. 5 Now that you know a little about me Let me show you some of the work I ve done. LookBooker: A native app for ios. Twitch: A feature addition for gaming s biggest live streaming service. The Strand: A new e-commerce site for a New York City institution. You can, of course, scroll through my portfolio and peruse at your leisure. 6 LookBooker The Context LookBooker is the fastest-growing hair and beauty booking service and salon aggregator in New York City. The Challenge LookBooker wanted to transition their primary platform from web to ios, and their business model from charging salons a subscription fee, to charging consumers through the booking process. They approached us to design the app and to integrate a payment system into the the booking process. My Role In this project, I played a major role in ideating and designing the core feature set. I also designed our research survey, conducted a number of user interviews, and made wireframes and mockups of a number of centrally important pages. Twitch.TV Feature

7 Research Our team conducted research in three parts: A Screener Survey User Interviews Stakeholder Interviews I played a leading/spearheading role here. I supported my team s efforts in these initiatives. Click the Graphs to See the Screener. Twitch.TV Feature

8 Distillation & Design Our team took the user data we had researched and used it to create several personas to help us describe our users journey, and guide our design. Then we made use of the MoSCoW method, as well as variations of affinity mapping to prioritize features and functionality. Next, we ran a design studio, bouncing ideas off one another until we had a first-draft paper wireframe of the core screen flow. Twitch.TV Feature

9 Wireframing I did a lot of wireframing for this project. Core pages, including the salon listing, and the salon profile, were my responsibility to design and render in low-to-medium fidelity. I also iterated on, and made hi-fidelity mockups of the appointments pages based on my team s initial work. Twitch.TV Feature

10 Design Focus: Convenience It emerged in our research that certain users just wanted a last-minute appointment with as few hoops to jump through as possible. So I proposed a match-making feature to my team. With everyone onboard, I wireframed it. Then we tested it, and as we iterated on the results of our tests, we upped the fidelity. Twitch.TV Feature

11 Design Focus: Relationships Another insight we gained from our research was that some people had relationships with stylists, and really wanted to get an appointment a specific person. So I surfaced that in the booking process (with an optional out for those who didn t care). Twitch.TV Feature

12 The Prototype What s In It? The core user flows for all three of our personas. Global Navigation. Account creation & credit card capture. Salon finder, list view. Salon finder, map view. 13 Twitch.tv The Context Twitch is the world s largest live streaming service, and the 4th-highest bandwidth consumer in the US. Millions of gamers tune in to watch one another play games live. Click Here to See the Screener The Challenge Currently, Twitch is mainly a live streaming service. Users looking to robustly edit, monetize and talk about recorded video must do so on competing sites like Youtube. We expanded the Twitch ecosystem by surfacing recorded video, and - more centrally - gave Twitch s community a new way to communicate, outside of the notorious Twitch chat. My Role Like with LookBooker, I also drafted the screener survey and conducted a number of user interviews. However my greatest contribution was in design and wireframing: I was responsible for 100% of wireframing and prototyping for my team, as well as many of the original design ideas - like comments situated on the video s time bar - that we then iterated on and made even better. 14 Distillation Our team took the data we had gained via our survey, and a number of user interviews, and used it to create three distinct personas: the hardcore gamer, the casual gamer, and the content creator. Twitch.TV Feature

15 Feature Ideation Now that we had salient data points, every member of the team brought a list of suggested features that would benefit our primary user, the Hardcore Gamer, as well as our secondary personas. And we eventually agreed on our minimum-viable feature list. We prioritized them according to what we felt was highest priority, and what was accomplishable within our time constraints. 16 Design With our preliminary feature list locked, we ran a design studio and began sketching. My Contributions Everyone on the team came up with similar ideas and implementations. One idea I floated early on in the process that became a central component of the final work was a visual interface to comment on specific points in a video, giving context to every conversation. 17 Iterations My team ran multiple rounds of user tests. Using their data, I iterated on our wireframes, solving usability problems as they emerged. We improved the clarity of our comment icons over time, eventually using users profile pictures as indicators that they had made a comment. Users just weren t seeing the option to add a comment pin. Even making it an extremely distracting color didn t help. So we baked it into the pre-existing UI, and it worked. Twitch.TV Feature

18 Even More Iterations Our first draft worked as a proof-of-concept, but there continued to be usability issues to address. Our first-pass commenting UI was obtrusive, interrupted the video, was removed from the comment chain and just didn t work well. We slimmed everything down, moved it below the video, and created a less frustrating, more intuitive experience. Twitch.TV Feature

19 The Prototype What s In It? The core user flow for our viewer personas. Preliminary, first-pass dropdown navigation & category hierarchy. In-video comment functionality. Viewing, expanding, collapsing and responding to existing comments. Making new comments at whatever point in the video the user finds compelling. What Are the Next Steps? Comment upvoting. Comment deletion. Total overhaul of the global navigation. And A/B testing and card sorting to assist in the above. 20 The Strand The Context An independent bookstore and beloved New York institution, Strand Books is nevertheless a small fish in a pond full of big competitors - particularly in the digital space. Strand Books sells used & rare as well as new books and their own line of branded merchandise. The Challenge Strand s website isn't fully equipped to go toe-to-toe with the titans, like Amazon, of online book retail. They can t compete in terms of scale, but they can offer a better experience for the shopper. My Role I worked alone on this project, with no team, though my research - including personas - was provided for me. My work primarily focused on information architecting the site s navigation and product sorting, and then designing the checkout process. This project does not feature high-fidelity mockups - the emphasis was on information architecture and design process. Twitch.TV Feature

21 Information Architecture A core part of building an e-commerce site is figuring out the site hierarchy - particularly with regard to the products listed therein. I conducted a number of open card sorts to get a sense for what categories people expected for the products in my inventory list. Then I conducted closed card sorts to refine and finalize the contents of my categories. Twitch.TV Feature

Twitch.TV Feature 4 Suggested books addresses both a business priority and the persona s need to build a relationship with the business. A secondary persona s main priority was to have the next hot thing. 5 6 Value assessment was a priority for 2/3 of the personas presented to me. Footer navigation contains information that the average browser won t need, but that an interesting party can readily find via scrolling or a page-search function.

24 Designing The Checkout Process The Problem The Solution People hate filling forms. They re long. They re boring and impersonal. They re frustrating. Minimize number of steps (Don t ask for anything we don t need for the transaction) Chunk the Content (Too big a form is overwhelming. Too many steps causes fatigue. My middle ground: 2 pages, one for identity, one for billing) Gamify & Validate the Checkout Process (Encouraging, You re almost there! copy creates a sense of progression while confirming every step of the process that they've completed) Confirm Only After the Transaction is Complete (Nobody likes pre-sale confirmation pages. Users can go back easily, or even undo an order if they change their mind) Twitch.TV Feature
