2 INTRODUCTION The Dual Enrollment Program was created to allow qualified students to fulfill high school graduation requirements while earning college credit toward a degree program. Courses are offered on the Florida Gateway College campus and also on the Fort White High School campus when available. Some courses are also offered via the Internet. The program is fully funded by the state; consequently, there is no cost to the student for admission fees, tuition, or books during the regular school year. Dual Enrollment students are issued a Florida Gateway College Identification Card at the Students Activity Office in Building 14 of the Student Union Building. This card allows students to take advantage of the programs, services, and activities on the Florida Gateway College campus. The student will use this number to log into the student section of the FGC website to check his or her grades, transcripts and current schedules. The number on the card will also be required to register for future dual enrollment courses. They are, at the same time, Fort White High School students with all FWHS students rights and responsibilities.

3 GENERAL INFORMATION Freshmen are NOT ALLOWED to participate in Dual Enrollment. Sophomores are DISCOURGAGED from dual enrollment until the second semester of their 10 th grade year. Experience has shown that students are less prepared prior to this time; thus, they are less successful than Juniors and Seniors. However, Sophomores may enroll starting with Summer B classes after successful completion of their 9 th grade year. Tuition is waived by Florida Gateway College (FGC). Books are paid for by Fort White High School (FWHS). Some courses require lab fees or other fees, which must be paid for by the student. Refer to the section on books for more information. STUDENTS AND PARENTS SHOULD REALIZE THAT DUAL ENROLLMENT COURSES ARE COLLEGE LEVEL COURSES AND ARE NOT EXTENSIONS OF HIGH SCHOOL. College policies apply. The academic level is expected to be beyond that of high school courses. These college courses are the same level of difficulty as any other college course. Students are required to be on-time to class and should not leave class early. If a situation arises where a student must be absent or leave class early, he or she should notify the instructor prior to the incident for immediately upon return from the absence. Students are expected to complete coursework in the time provided. Plagiarism could result in an F and dismissal from the Dual Enrollment Program. If this action is taken, it will follow the student on his or her academic record. Each grade earned under the Dual Enrollment Program becomes a part of the student s COLLEGE GRADE POINT AVERAGE (G.P.A.) and is also part of the student s high school G.P.A. Dual Enrollment students are advised to be aware of their college G.P.A. as well as their high school G.P.A. Both can effect admissions into post-high school institutions. If you are having trouble in a course talk with your instructor and seek tutoring at the FGC Learning Lab. Also, speak with your counselor concerning any problems. STUDENTS MUST TAKE AT LEAST ONE CREDIT-EARNING COURSE AT FWHS AND MUST HAVE A TOTAL OF SEVEN CLASSES EACH REGULAR SEMESTER. College policies on attendance are very firm. Students must also adhere to the Columbia County Pupil Progression Plan regarding withdrawal from college courses. If a student wants to drop a course, he or she must do so by the college s drop/add deadline in order to not receive a grade. If a student wishes to withdraw from a course and receive a W on his or her college transcript, the student must do so

4 by the college s withdrawal deadline. Students must refer to the college s catalog for the exact dates each semester. If a student stops attending a college course, the instructor can withdraw the student by the deadline without the student s consent; however, there is no automatic withdrawal or drop for lack of attendance. Students must also drop or withdraw from the course prior to the end of the first three weeks of the high school semester to ensure placement into a credit-earning class. If a student withdraws from a college course after the first three weeks of the high school semester, he or she will receive an F on his or her high school transcript. The Dual Enrollment student is still eligible for membership in or attendance at all FWHS functions open to members of his/her class under the following conditions: The student is responsible for the payment of all dues and/or fees, the ordering of tickets, printed materials, and rental of cap and gown, etc. within the time limits set by the school. The student is subject to all school, school board, and/or state rules and regulations while participating in and/or attending school functions. It is the student s responsibility to request information concerning all class activities. When a scheduling conflict arises between required or extracurricular activities at FWHS and FGC, it is the STUDENT S responsibility to make arrangements with the FGC instructors and FWHS staff. BOOKS Dual Enrollment students should check out book(s) and/or access code(s) for college courses one week prior to the start of the college courses at the FWHS Media Center only. Times for dual enrollment materials checkout will be posted each semester. If there are any issues arising from this, the student should make an appointment or his/her high school guidance counselor. If a student does not return his/her dual enrollment book(s) to the FWHS Media Center one week after the end of his/her college final exam(s), the student will be placed on the school obligation list, and school board policy will be followed accordingly. This could prohibit a student from further enrollment in the dual enrollment program until the obligation has been cleared.

5 COURSES/CLASSES FGC courses must be at least 3 hours of college credit. Most college classes meet 3 hours per week for 16 weeks, which equals 48 hours of instruction (1 semester). Students should think thoroughly on which degree and major to chose. It is advisable that if a student is planning on transferring courses after high school to a university, that the student should talk with universities they might attend to make sure that the Associate degree they are pursuing is in the student s best interest for his/her future academic plans. Students on the Associate of Science (A.S.) track may take only the specific courses named within that program description and be working toward a degree in that area. Students pursuing an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree must take certain basic classes. There are many have choices that meet these requirements. The following MAY NOT be taken under dual enrollment: Prep remedial courses. If a student scores into a prep level course, the course will be required by FGC but MAY NOT be taken through the Dual Enrollment Program. Therefore, the FWHS student cannot take prep courses until he or she graduates. However, a student scoring into the prep level in one academic area may still take non-remedial courses in any area where his or her scores were high enough to enroll in the Dual Enrollment level courses. PE or Recreation courses and any course not listed in the FGC/FWHS Articulation or State Equivalencies List Duplicate classes (any class considered a duplicate to other college or high school classes already taken with credit earned). Please refer to high school and college rules regarding re-taking courses where a grade of D or F was earned. Audits. The Columbia County School Board WILL NOT pay for an audit (sitting through the class, but not getting credit for it). Except for the above exceptions, any 3-hour or more class offered within the A.A. or A.S. program areas may be taken as a Dual Enrollment class. Classes are on the FGC campus and offered at a variety of times, including day classes, night classes, weekend, and short-term classes. During the school year, at least one class will be offered on the FWHS campus. INTERNET CLASSES: These courses entail much student freedom and require a large amount of self-discipline on the student s part. Students interact with the instructors via and websites. The student must pace him/herself to meet the

6 instructor s deadlines without constant reminders from the instructor. It is not recommended to take more than one internet course per semester; however, if a student chooses to take more than one Internet course, the student may with the knowledge that it is his or her own responsibility to keep on track in the course and to communicate regularly with the instructor. It is important for a student to update his/her address on Blackboard and on the FGC student self services site prior to the start of class. Statistics show that first time college students do not do as well on Internet classes. We recommend that students take their first class in an actual classroom setting before enrolling in an Internet class. SUMMER CLASSES: Summer A and B classes may be taken under the Dual Enrollment Program on a year-to-year basis. The determination is made by the FWHS principal. At the present time, the maximum number of courses allowed during the summer is two. Please refer to the Columbia County Pupil Progression Plan for weighting of classes as directed by the county school board policy. APPLICATION PROCEDURE 1. Student should meet the minimum grade point qualification of 3.0 for both the A.A. (academic) and A.S. (vocational) programs or the 2.0 for the certificate programs. 2. Student should meet the minimum passing scores for testing using the ACT, SAT, and/or PERT. The score must be on the student s high school record. 3. Student should attend a meeting with his/her parent/guardian and high school representative at which time the program will be explained in detail. 4. Student should sign, along with the parent, the TERMS OF AGREEMENT. 5. Student should complete an Application for Dual Enrollment and bring it to his/her appropriate high school guidance counselor. The high school guidance counselor will verify the test scores, G.P.A., and recommendation on the application. 6. The student will take the completed application along with registration forms to the FGC Dual Enrollment Academic Advisor (currently Mrs. Linda Williams) and meet with her at the FGC Office of Admissions in Building 14 of the Student Union. To set up a time for this meeting, the student should call Mrs. Williams at and schedule in advance.

7 REGISTRATION PROCEDURES After meeting with the FGC Dual Enrollment Academic Advisor and gaining acceptance, the student will be eligible to register for classes at the next available college registration date. FOR THE BEST SELECTION OF CLASSES AND EASE IN ARRANGING SCHEDULING, ALWAYS REGISTER AT THE EARLIEST POSSIBLE DATE. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT IN DETERMING CONFLICTS WITH THE FWHS SCHEDULE. PLEASE USE THE SCHEDULE OF CLASSES AT THE FGC WEBSITE FOR FINDING CLASSES AND TIMES BEFORE SEEING YOUR HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELOR. THIS WILL MAKE THINGS RUN EASIER AND FASTER FOR ALL INVOLVED. 1. Check on the dates for early registration. 2. Utilize the information at and identify the courses and times for classes you are interested in. Write down the exact courses and times you want, complete with the number, day, and time and take this to your high school guidance counselor. 3. Have your high school guidance counselor complete the registration form. Bring your FGC student ID card or number with you, because it will be used on the form if you are a returning dual enrollment student. 4. Call to schedule an appointment to take the registration form to your FGC Dual Enrollment Academic Advisor, Mrs. Williams. 5. After meeting with your FGC Dual Enrollment Academic Advisor, Mrs. Williams, bring the signed pink copy back to your high school guidance counselor to enter into the high school s computer system. 6. Any drop/adds within the required time frames at FWHS and/or FGC must follow this same process. 7. Any changes in FGC courses (dropping, adding, withdrawing) MUST originate with your high school guidance counselor.
