3 Thank you for your interest in the rthern and our TAFE delivered Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses. The decisions you make now about study and your life after school will open doors to exciting new possibilities. By choosing a TVET course you can begin to positively shape your future, today. I encourage you to go through the TVET 2016 Course Guide and discover the wide range of courses we have available. From automotive to hairdressing, retail to events, you have the opportunity while still at school, to build the foundation skills you need for work and further study and to discover your talents and abilities. All classes are held at our TAFE campuses and you will be interacting with students from all over Sydney, in an adult learning environment. You will be immersed in practical, skill focussed study and work placement may be a major component, allowing you to put your knowledge into practice. In 2014, we had great success with our students achieving first place in the NSW Higher School Certificate for TVET Automotive, Electrotechnology and Human Services and second place for Business Services. Karla Jane Wilson, who studied Human Services, said of her course I thoroughly enjoyed studying anatomy and physiology and then applying that knowledge in a practical setting at Sydney Private Hospital, where I did work experience for a week this year. This course is a fantastic subject to do for your! As well as being able to study a nursing course while at school, this subject contributes to your ATAR and will leave you with a Certifi cate III in Health Services Assistance. It s a win win situation! Once the is over the rthern offers many pathways and options to accommodate a successful academic experience. So if you would like to consider your options and study with the best, think TVET at the rthern! i chose electrotechnology because it seemed like an enjoyable and fun course that was related to Metals and Engineering as well as the fact that it was able to count towards my atar. 8 What is TVET? TaFE delivered Vocational Education and Training (TVET) 08

9 09 While studying for your Higher School Certificate, consider getting a head start on the road to your future career and pick up important life skills along the way. TVET Courses are a great study option because they allow you to:» Complete BOSTES units that count towards your» Gain practical skills that will make you job-ready» Experience an adult learning environment» Become more independent and confi dent» Start or complete a nationally recognised TAFE NSW qualifi cation at the same time as you do your» Prepare for further study and reduce study time post school» Choose from courses that are not offered at school» Meet other students who have the same interests and career aspirations as you» Meet teachers who are connected to industry and are experts in their fi elds. BOaRd developed industry CuRRiCuluM FRaMEWORK COuRSES Courses that are developed by the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES). These courses generally count towards 2 units per year of study toward the and following the optional examination, can count toward the calculation of a student s ATAR. All Board Developed Courses have a mandatory work placement requirement of 35 hours per 2 units of study. These courses provide a nationally recognised qualifi cation which can give you credit toward future TAFE and university education. BOaRd ENdORSEd COuRSE NON-FRaMEWORK COuRSES These courses are endorsed by the BOSTES and can count towards the units for the but do not have an exam so will not contribute to an ATAR. The units of competency that you complete will give you credit toward further TAFE study after the. The second year of a Board Endorsed Course will only run if there are viable student numbers to facilitate a class. EXTENSiON and SPECialiSaTiON COuRSES If a student is completing or has completed a 240 hour course, they may choose to add additional study through an extension or specialisation course. These extension courses can be one (60 hour), two (120 hour), three (180 hour) or four (240 hour) units of study. Board Developed Extension Courses do not contribute towards an ATAR as there is no exam. These courses will give additional units of competency toward further study and extra career skills for dedicated students. All Board Developed Courses can offer extension and specialisation options subject to demand. Please speak to your School Liaison Offi cer or us at nsi.tvet@tafensw.edu.au. discreet COuRSES At the rthern we offer a range of TVET courses that have been designed for students with additional support needs. Courses include hospitality, retail, business and several more offering learning opportunities in a supportive environment. See the following course information for Discreet Course availability. TVET ONliNE COuRSES With online courses you can complete your course from any location, however remote. A Certifi cate III in Events or Tourism is offered as part of a Board of Studies Framework Course and if the optional exam is completed can contribute to an ATAR. CERTiFiCaTE iii in EVENTS SiT30612 Events are diverse in nature and this qualifi cation provides a pathway to work in event operations in a range of industries including tourism and travel, hospitality, sport, cultural and community sectors. Possible job titles include: conference assistant, events coordinator or events supervisor. CERTiFiCaTE iii in TOuRiSM SiT30112 This qualifi cation provides a pathway to work in many tourism industry sectors and for a diversity of employers, including tour operators, visitor information centres and cultural or heritage sites. Possible job titles include: booking agent, visitor information offi cer or tour coordinator.

10 About TVET WHaT about an australian TERTiaRY admission RaNK (atar)? You can include one Board Developed, Industry Curriculum Framework (240 hour) VET course including Work Placement in the calculation of your ATAR. The exam is optional for VET courses. Board Endorsed Courses do not count towards an ATAR. WHaT units Will a TVET COuRSE give ME? They are the same unit values as school electives. Generally 2 units per course per year. WHaT Will TVET COST? Students from government schools are supported by funds from the NSW Department of Education and Training and there are no additional costs incurred by the student. Students from non government schools may incur some costs or these may be met by the school. Please check with your school Careers Advisor for more details. All mandatory equipment, textbooks and safety equipment will be provided by TAFE NSW at no charge to the student. HOW Will TVET FiT into MY SCHOOl TiMETaBlE? Most TVET courses are run on a VET school day (usually Tuesday afternoon for four hours). Check with your Year Advisor on what happens at your school. 10 attendance at TaFE While you are attending your TAFE NSW course you will assume the role of a TAFE NSW student. This means you are bound by the rules and regulations of TAFE NSW campus. If you break the rules you will be disciplined by the Campus Manager in consultation with your School Principal and you may be asked to leave the course. It is expected that you attend all lessons and stay for the whole time. If you do not, your Careers Advisor will be notifi ed. If your attendance is poor and assessment events are missed without

11 11 notifi cation, you may risk receiving a n Completion Determination. If you do not improve your attendance, diligence, effort or attitude after two warning letters, you will be issued an N Determination, which means you will NOT be able to count your TAFE NSW course as units of study towards your Preliminary or year. WHaT if i am SiCK OR HaVE TO leave EaRlY? You are expected to contact your TAFE School Liaison Offi cer (TSLO) if sick or absent from class. A medical certifi cate is required as proof of illness if you miss an assessment event. PuPil FREE days TAFE NSW does not have pupil free days. If your school has a pupil free day that falls on your TAFE day, it is still expected that you will attend TAFE. STudENTS TaKiNg HOlidaYS during THEiR TVET COuRSE It is recommended that students contemplating extended, planned leave do not apply for a TVET course. As classes are only once a week for 4 hours, it is not possible to make up this time within the TVET NSW class. The BOSTES requires TAFE NSW to report on students satisfactorily covering the course content and meeting the mandatory 120 hour or 240 hour course requirements. WHaT about WORK PlaCEMENT? Some courses have mandatory work placement which is generally 35 hours (1 week full time) per year of study, some courses may vary. If you do not complete work placement, you will automatically receive an N Determination as this is a BOSTES requirement for completion of the course. Work placement is a fantastic opportunity for you to experience the workplace and develop your employability skills. We will fi nd the work placement for you and assist you in preparing for this experience. WHaT do i WEaR TO TVET? This will vary between courses and you will be advised by your teacher at your fi rst lesson. It may be school uniform, your own appropriate clothing or a specifi c uniform that TAFE NSW will provide to you, e.g. chefs uniform for cookery. Where required, students are provided with personal protective equipment (PPE). Students are expected to bring this equipment to each TVET lesson. Failure to bring PPE will result in the student being excluded from class and requested to return to school. The school and parent/guardian will be notifi ed. if i HaVE a disability, CaN i do a TVET COuRSE? Please ensure you complete the disability section on the expression of interest form. We will work with you to choose a TVET course that will be appropriate to your abilities. We also have additional courses that have be specially created for students with additional support needs. The courses have been adapted to provide the best learning opportunities for each student and we will give you additional learning support in class. Your needs will be discussed with your school representative and a TAFE Teacher Consultant and yourself. Consideration also needs to be given to the completion of mandatory work placement as part of the Board Developed Courses. See your Careers Advisor for more assistance. HOW CaN i apply FOR TVET? You apply through your school s Careers Advisor. You need to ask for an Expression of Interest form, complete with the signatures of the school and your parents/guardian. This form is then scanned and sent to the TAFE School Liaison Offi cer (TSLO). Schools retain the Expression of Interest form in accordance with the State Records Act HaVE i BEEN accepted into THE COuRSE? Once all Expressions of Interest have been received, offers for course places will be made to students. Courses will only run if there are a suffi cient number of students to form a viable class. You will receive regular updates from the TSLO at your elected campus showing your student status. CaN late STudENTS STill apply? The application process is an ongoing process up to and including the fi rst three TVET weeks of TAFE if vacancies exist in TVET courses. WHEN do i STaRT? Students are expected to attend from the fi rst week of Term 1. Where the student does not present for enrolment without good reason, it is possible that their position in the course will be in jeopardy. School Based Apprentices/Trainees are expected to enrol during main TAFE NSW enrolments. Contact your TAFE School Liaison Offi cer, details in this guide. WHaT if i decide TO WiTHdRaW? If you undertake a two year course and then decide to withdraw after the fi rst year, if you have met requirements including completing the 120 hours you may gain your 2 units of credit. If you are studying a framework course you must complete the 120 hours and 35 hours work placement to gain the 2 units credit. Students who do not do this will result in an N Determination. 13 13 School Based apprenticeships (SBa) and Traineeships (SBT) give senior high school students the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised vocational education and training qualification whilst completing their Higher School Certificate and working in their chosen field. If you are a School Based Apprentice or Trainee, you will be paid for part time employment, currently up to 180 days (depending on the industry) before 31 December in the year. Your TAFE NSW study will be usually 4 to 6 hours per week during school terms and counts as an subject. In some cases, it can count towards your ATAR. HOW TO get a SCHOOl BaSEd apprenticeship OR TRaiNEESHiP? STEP ONE: CHOOSE an OCCuPaTiON Choose an area that interests you, or that you have some skills in. A careers advisor or counsellor can help you work this out. Complete a School based Apprenticeship or Traineeship Expression of Interest Form and return it to your careers advisor. STEP TWO: FiNd an EMPlOYER You ll need to fi nd employment in the industry where you would like to undertake your Apprenticeship or Traineeship. You can:» Check vacancies on job search websites» Check employment sections in newspapers» Register with JobBoard at nsi.edu.au/jobboard STEP THREE: apply FOR an apprenticeship OR TRaiNEESHiP Get it in writing. Your employer is required to contact an Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC) and complete a Training Contract, which is a binding agreement. The AAC will provide you and your employer with information on Government incentives that may be available. The training contract is prepared and lodged with State Training Services by the employers preferred Australian Apprenticeships Centre. STEP FOuR: STaRT YOuR TRaiNiNg WiTH THE NORTHERN SYdNEY institute Get in touch with the rthern to confi rm your start date. You will need to have your signed Training Contract or Training Plan Proposal, from the AAC as proof of your apprenticeship or traineeship. WHaT are THE BENEFiTS? You can:» Combine studies with vocational training» Gain valuable work skills and experience» Earn an income while you learn» Finish apprenticeship up to one year earlier» Receive nationally recognised Vocational Education and Technical qualifi cation» Have a pathway to further studies. 21 ELECTROTECHNOLOGY Electrical For those who have the inner spark, electrotechnology can brighten your future. In this course, you will complete the core modules for most of the electrotechnology trade courses. This means, study time after school is reduced. You will learn to measure voltage and current, what a circuit diagram means, how circuit components behave, what they do, and how to perform testing of electrical equipment. Plus, you will also install and maintain electrical equipment for domestic, commercial and industrial environments. Current skills will also be taught in applying environmental and sustainable procedures in the energy sector.
